In this course, students will ...• Learn the genre conventions for the main genres found in Secondary School, through an emphasis on the writing process• Practice their reading and writing through the engaging topic of technology• Produce three polished pieces of writing: two essays and a descriptive piece

This abridged version of our Academic Writing program, designed for students new to our Secondary program, provides a crash course on the three main writing genres that secondary students encounter at school: persuasive, descriptive, and expository. Students will develop the tools necessary to research and write essays that are well-organized, clear, and persuasive, and will learn how to use descriptive techniques skillfully to create powerful written images. Students will be challenged with texts that require them to exercise their critical thinking and employ careful analysis to come to their conclusions. In addition to giving students the skills they need to master the three genres, lessons will emphasize the importance of effective planning, editing, and revising.

Secondary WritingAt the Secondary level, students must grapple with increasingly more complex writing conventions as well as more challenging subject matter. To that end, our regular writing courses are designed to develop critical reading and writing skills within four main genres: persuasive, informational, descriptive, and fiction. As within our Primary programs, the courses continue to emphasise the importance of the writing process - brainstorming, outlining, writing, and editing - in order to cultivate independent student writers.

In this course, students will ...• Reflect on moments in their lives that were important to them• Gain exposure to the challenging genre of personal essays through examples and practice task• Write thoughtful and compelling personal essays• Follow the writing process of planning, drafting, and editing

This specialized Academic Writing course will expose students to writing personal essays, which are frequently required for university admissions. Students will read many examples of this genre, extracting the most effective strategies, and then applying them to their own work. As this genre is a melding of both formal essay-writing and storytelling, students will practice important strategies for both forms of writing, including structuring essays appropriately and using sensory details to paint a picture. Students will also develop the skills necessary to revise and edit their papers to produce polished final pieces.

Assignments contain heavy elements of independent research, and demand initiative and an inquisitive approach. Throughout the course, students will be expected and encouraged to raise questions, challenge opinions, as well as lead discussions of their own. All of this will be set within a lively, discussion-driven academic setting where students will engage intellectually with a wide range of carefully selected and challenging materials from the humanities and social sciences.

Grades 10-12 - Preparing for College Applications: Personal Statements and InterviewsIn an increasingly competitive admissions landscape, personal essays have become paramount components to any application. Whether it be for university admissions to the US or the UK, it is now more essential than ever that students use their writing to present their best selves in their applications. This course is designed to teach students how to highlight their unique experiences, skills, achievements, and passions to prospective schools. Students will brainstorm, draft, and edit their own personal statements for organization and style while using past successful personal statements and Capstone-generated resources to fine-tune their messages. In addition, through rigorous mock interview scenarios, guided conversations, and brainstorming sessions, students will gain an understanding of the interview process while practicing their conversational skills.
