Have you seen the earth movers and other heavy machinery at the Capri? We’re in the construction phase now, working to get as much done as possible before the inevitable weather pushes us into winter construction. These are thrilling times! In addition to the daily construction progress, we’ve scheduled our ceremonial groundbreaking for October 17, and we’re also in the process of finalizing a New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC) partnership that will ultimately provide about $2.3M in equity. Have you seen the earth movers and other heavy machinery at the Capri? We’re in the construction phase now, working to get as much done as possible before the inevitable weather pushes us into winter construction.

These are thrilling times! In addition to the daily construction progress, we’ve scheduled our ceremonial groundbreaking for October 17, and we’re also in the process of finalizing a New

They were taught by a team of amazing, experienced teaching artists including Spears, Rick Thompson, Kimberly Keaton, Diane Robinson, Terrell Woods and Chico Perez.

A Note From Anne Long

Dear Friends of PCYC,

With deep gratitude I dedicate this letter to the current and past members of the PCYC Board of Directors. As we prepare for our upcoming 65th annual meeting I am in awe of their collective vision, dedication, persistence and wise stewardship of this unique and successful nonprofit organization in North Minneapolis.

In my 46 years as a PCYC staff member, I’ve always known the Board to carry out its duties seriously and effectively. They act in the best interest of the mission, adhere to financial and governance accountabilities, keep a keen eye on programmatic outcomes, and support, evaluate, and work in concert with the executive director.

That said, there are at least three more key PCYC board characteristics that are essential to our ability to weather storms and take advantage of opportunities to advance our work.1. Board members tell the story of PCYC’s accomplishments to

everyone they know, with hope and excitement.

2. Board members often say that they receive more than they give through their board membership – and they rejoice in this reciprocal relationship.

3. Board members listen respectfully and take all ideas, opinions and values into consideration. Youth and community are always at the center of their decisions, along with the long-term sustainability of PCYC. Blame, gossip, and mean-spiritedness have no place in PCYC’s board room.

It is such a gift to have a board whose good intentions, support and wisdom we trust.

Thanks to all who have served on our board of directors over the past 65 years. Special thanks to those who’ve taken leadership roles, and to Karen Polzin, our current board president. Her clear vision, passion for our work, and superb people and financial skills deftly guide us toward the future.

Karen and her leadership team make a big difference – as do you.

Thank you, all.Anne Long, Executive Director

Legacy Giving at PCYCWe are so grateful for the many friends who’ve made a legacy gift by including PCYC in their estate plans. To leave a gift in your will, simply share this sentence with your attorney or financial planner:“I bequeath $_________ or _________% of my estate to Plymouth Christian Youth Center, 2210 Oliver Avenue North, Minneapolis, MN 55411.” That’s all it takes to leave a lasting legacy of hope in North Minneapolis. Please call Debra deNoyelles, 612-643-2042, if you’re interested in learning more, and don’t forget to let us know if you’ve taken this very generous step.

Jaleeza Smith-Breedlove is a lifelong resident of North Minneapolis who grew up watching the women in her family work together for the betterment of students and families across the Northside. She joined PCYC’s Out-of-School-Time (OST) team in April

of 2017 as Program Manager. Smith-Breedlove’s innate talent for social work, combined with her Master’s Degree in Social Work with a specialty in Program Development from Augsburg College, make her a natural fit for leading PCYC’s OST program. “I really like seeing how the kids grow,” she said. “One of our scholars, who was a kindergartener when I started, is now in the third grade. I have enjoyed seeing how she has progressed over the years, and I’ve been able to share many happy moments with her.”

“I live by the words, ‘Every child needs one adult who is outrageously, ridiculously happy for them.’ I am over-the-top happy for our scholars, for even the little bitty things they accomplish. It annoys them, but they love it.”

OST provides academic enrichment activities in reading, math, and social-emotional learning as well as other learning opportunities in art and science. This fall the program is serving 70 kindergarten through 5th grade scholars who came to PCYC primarily from the Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ). Enrollment is currently open for all students in grades K-5. Interested families can contact Jaleeza directly at [email protected] or 612-643-2096. Smith-Breedlove and her team are recruiting volunteers for the program, too. “If anyone has a passion for children, or hobbies to share, we’re the place for you.” Interested volunteers should contact Megan Fair, [email protected] or 612-643-2092.

quickly and earn more credits, or if someone needs more time and support they can receive it.”

PBL does present some challenges in the classroom. “There are a lot of different thing going on at the same time. For me that means a lot of floating, checking in, trying to provide as many supports as possible,” said Christen.

“Teachers are sometimes uncomfortable on the front side of things,” added Tarleton. “They lose a little control. They’re asked to be less the expert, and more the collaborator and facilitator.”

Shayanna Scott, a senior at PYC, thinks the hard part about Project-based learning is “staying on track. You don’t have the classroom structure, and it’s easy to get behind. You really have to learn how to manage your time.” But for Scott, the positives of PBL far outweigh the negatives. “It’s very flexible. There are more options for

kids, and you can work independently. …It’s also really nice to see how other people learn and how others are thinking. You learn to be open minded and see different possibilities. It’s a good experience.”

Scott’s current project for English class involves a deep dive into August Wilson’s Fences. Christen has another student who’s chosen to study the importance of childhood literacy and intends to find funding for, and a place to install, a Little Free Library dedicated to childrens’ books.

“Student engagement is higher,” said Christen. “This method better prepares students for the kinds of work that they’ll be doing after high school.”

Tarleton agrees. “We know that we have to find different ways to connect, involve and engage with our students. The traditional ways don’t always work. …When students are involved in designing their projects to meet their educational needs, with their own interests in mind, they have a greater connection and investment in their learning. That’s what we want for our students.”
