FrOM THE EDITOrI love seeing the transformation of Palmer Events Center beginning in November with A Christmas Affairs winter wonderland filled with excited ladies, moms, and grandmothers shopping for holiday gifts. The excitement continues in December with Coats for Kids which includes so many excited, beaming faces of children who have just chosen a warm winter coat.

This issue of Capitalines examines the transformation of the Central Texas communitys needs and how The Junior League of Austin (JLA) is mindfully training its volunteers and evolving as an organization to meet these needs. This issue highlights the various community agencies JLA is partnered with to encourage higher education and trained leadership in the next generation of young women.

We also take a look at the importance of A Christmas Affair (ACA) and how your ACA dollars contribute to JLAs support of the arts, our animal friends, and League programs such as FIT - Food In Tummies, ABC Grants, and Coats for Kids. I hope youll also enjoy reading about how League volunteers are nourishing the youngest of our community and try whipping up a couple of healthy holiday recipes.

Of course, this magazines informative content and artful design would not be possible without an amazing, dedicated group of ladies who have willingly developed new skills to make this issue of Capitalines possible. We thank you for your support of The Junior League of Austin and wish you a wonderful holiday season.

Welcome to A Christmas Affair 2014 Christmas in the City! This years event marks the 39th year The Junior League of Austin members have produced this premiere shopping event kicking off the holiday season in Austin. Since its first year the event has grown from 41, mostly local, merchants to an event with more than 200 merchants featuring products from around the world!

Just as our city has grown and changed, so has A Christmas Affair and so has The Junior League of Austin. Our membership has grown and is more diverse. As an organization of women we have adapted to the changing roles our members have in society and we have continued to evolve in response to the changing needs of our community and our members. Weve grown and evolved while keeping our purpose focused.

Our members are dedicated to improving our community through voluntarism, which, in turn, develops remarkable women leaders who serve in our community. In my view, this model of membership, voluntarism and training creates a perfect, infinite cycle for every action given, there is a benefit gained, thereby creating a uniquely talented, trained and effective community leader.

Each year the A Christmas Affair committee sets out to create a uniquely themed and decorated holiday market intermingled with special events for kids of all ages and this year is no exception. PLANTING SEEDS OF IMPACT: EDuCATIONBY JuLIE BErGSTrOM

Benjamin Franklin is noted for saying, Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. This year The Junior League of Austin (JLA) provides volunteers to a variety of education-related community agencies and volunteer placements.

Starting with Austins youngest learners, volunteers with BookSpring address early literacy needs in our community. Last year, BookSpring served over 21,000 Austin children at AISD campuses, local HeadStart centers, and other child development centers.

YOuNg READERSThrough her volunteer placement with BookSpring, Lauren Burnett has been able to share her love for reading and learning. She notes, I learned to read at a very early age, and I credit my parents and grandparents for taking the time to read to me often and make it part of my daily routine. When my parents would ask me why I loved reading so much, I would tell them it was because I could go anywhere and do anything. I hope that I am now able to inspire and motivate children to enjoy reading the way my family did for me.

BookSpring, in collaboration with organizations such as JLA, will place 50,000 new books in the hands of children who might not otherwise have books of their own this year.

Every student chose one book to take home. The joy in their eyes when receiving their new books was heartwarming. Each child immediately started looking through their book, asking me and the teachers to read it to them. I am thankful to BookSpring for allowing these children the opportunity

to keep a brand new book, to read and re-read again, said JLA volunteer, Lisa Moore.

CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVERSThis year, Lisa continues to make an impact on young Austinites as a volunteer with the Thinkery, Austin Childrens Museums new home of the why and the how. League members learn alongside children serving as camp guides at the Thinkerys summer camps. Supporting the Thinkerys mission to create innovative learning experiences and inspire the next generation of creative problem solvers, JLA members volunteered with first and second graders in June. I got to play and discover right along with them. I was amazed at the creativity of the Thinkerymaking seemingly normal activities interactive and educational, allows the children to think more deeply, continued Lisa.

League member gioia Bufkin spent time this summer leading third through fifth grade students during the Thinkerys engineering camp. One of my favorite moments was a crystal making activity. I was amazed to see campers creativity to design, build, and collaborate on each activity.

FIRST gENERATION COLLEgE gRADuATESThe League is fortunate to have many teachers as members, who volunteer in educational placements, multiplying their impact in Austin. Breakthrough Austin Project Chair, Lyra Swinney, was drawn to this program because of her experiences as a middle school teacher. I knew when selecting my placement choices that I wanted to work with an education-related agency. The mission of Breakthrough is to create first-generation college graduates.

Each year Breakthrough admits a new class of low-income students from campuses that feed into some of Austins lowest performing high schools. In 2013, Breakthrough served nearly 750 students in grades six through 12 and mentored first-semester college students. Breakthrough utilizes League volunteers like Lyra, as mentors. In August of 2013, Lyra was matched as a College Application Coach to an Austin-area student who had dreams of attending The university of Texas. I became her go-to person for questions about college. I didnt always have the answers, but we figured it out together. The student, her parents and a Breakthrough representative decided that ACC would be the better option for her first year. I was so fortunate that Breakthrough allowed me to stick with her for my placement the following year, said Lyra. My role evolved from College Application Coach to College Persistence Coach. Throughout her mentees freshman year, Lyra helped this student plan classes, research professors, and develop a long-term degree plan. She also shared advice on studying, time management strategies, and approaching professors during office hours. Her first and second semesters, she made a 4.0. We celebrated! This summer, she made another 4.0. said Lyra proudly. With the Leagues support, this particular student is now applying to The university of Texas with a perfect gPA.

INNOVATIVE TEACHERSMore dreams will become reality this year through The Junior League of Austins ABC (Aid for Better Classrooms) Grants. ABC Grants has awarded more than $200,000 in grants to local area teachers during its 19-year history, enabling teachers to introduce original curriculum-enhancing activities into the classroom. Project Chair, Alicia Robertson, works with a team to award grants, For me, a placement is an opportunity to utilize personal and professional skills to influence change in the Austin community.

While JLA members volunteer in these placements, they find themselves learning. I am in development at a school, so learning how to work with volunteers and committees, leading a meeting, thinking of a broad community and strategizing to support our students is in every way elevated because of my League experience. I am a better mom, friend and professional because of the values and skills I have learned.

JLA volunteers help creat innovative learning experiences

The JLAs FIT program meets another critical nutrition need in our community. According to the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, our state ranks among the worst states in the nation for hunger, child hunger and obesity. One in every four children in Texas experience food insecurity and multiple studies show that children who are hungry do not excel in school. FIT Chair, Deanna Schobey, works with her committee in Del Valle schools to help provide backpacks of nutritious food to kids on Fridays, filling the nutritional void

HEALTHY FOOD FOr FEEDING MINDS AND GrOWING BODIESBY JuL IE BErGSTrOM

The Junior League of Austin (JLA) is committed to ensuring that children have access to nutritious foods to feed their minds and grow strong bodies. When a child is hungry, he cannot concentrate in school, which can lead to poor performance. To addresss the hunger challenge, the JLA partners with community agencies such as Mothers Milk Bank and Sustainable Food Center to help grow our childrens minds and bodies. In addition, the Leagues own program FIT - Food In Tummies provides weekly nutrition during the school year to kids in two Del Valle ISD elementary schools.

Before being placed at Mothers Milk Bank, I had no idea that donor breast milk was even a thing, said League member Noel Nielsen, My time at the Milk Bank has raised my awareness in regards to the necessity of donor milk and donor milk facilities. Noels placement is in the Mothers Milk Bank lab which processes prescribed donor human milk for infants. The milk helps pre-term and medically fragile babies grow and thrive, by providing them special antibodies to fight disease and infection, as well as growth hormones to help them develop. Remarked Noel of her placement, Volunteering saves lives.

FIT backpacks provide healthy food to fill the weekend nutrition gap

many children face on weekends. Deanna recalls that, Last year good Friday was scheduled as a make-up day for the weather cancelations. Staff expected attendance numbers to be down. But instead teachers at Hillcrest Elementary found their halls full. The Hillcrest Principal told Deanna, Those kids came to get their FIT bags. They need that food.

During the 2013-2014 school year, the FIT program provided approximately 48,000 bags of food, delivered in 1,500 backpacks, for 32 weeks. The packs delivered weekly to Baty and Hillcrest Elementary includes food for the weekend, bilingual healthy recipe cards, and nutrition tips to be shared with the students family. Said Deanna about her experience with FIT, The opportunity to truly make a difference has been life changing for me.

Sustainable Food Center is another project where League members work to cultivate a healthy community by strengthening the local food system and improving access to nutritious, affordable food. Sustainable Food Center envisions a food-secure community where all children and adults grow, share, and prepare healthy, local food. When asked about what drew JLA volunteer Audrey Lopez to her placement she said, Helping independent, organic, and local farmers sell their high quality, nutritious food is very satisfying. gatherings like the Farmers Market are the fabric of our community.

A robust and dynamic arts and culture community creates a vibrant and happy community. The Junior League of Austin (JLA) volunteers are doing their part to assist in making the Austin area a wonderful place to live. Encouraging the arts through their service, League volunteers are sometimes the talent themselves, bringing music for the enjoyment of others. It is a privilege to serve the community in this manner, whether through the provision of new cultural experiences, giving the gift of familiar cultural touchstones, or assisting in the preservation of artistic skill.

NEW CuLTuRAL ExPERIENCESTwenty-five JLA members are currently volunteering with the ZACH Theatre. These volunteers serve as ushers and greeters for ZACH Theatre performances. By providing this essential service, JLA volunteers help ZACH focus on what it does best presenting more than 500 live performances a year, showcasing a wide range of local talent, cultivating original work and enchanting a diverse array of audiences.

SuSTAININg THE ENJOYMENT OF MuSICPlayhouse Singers brings together JLA Active and Sustaining members who share common talents. They sing, dance and entertain in nursing homes and senior communities and at League events. Their purpose is to bring joy into the lives of those who watch them perform. The Playhouse Singers, as a service-oriented group of volunteers, select songs that are appreciated and enjoyed by their different audiences.

NEW TALENT MEETS ESTABLISHED TECHNIquESThe university of Texas String Project has provided lessons to children since 1948, and has been supported by The Junior League of Austin since 1949. JLA volunteers provide event support for the project, assist in the organization of the music library and provide public relations assistance. With JLAs assistance, the uT String Project is able to more efficiently train teachers, develop talented students and bring skilled string musicians into our community.

EMPOWErING YOuNG WOMEN ACrOSS AuSTINBY ANNE PETErSThe Junior League of Austin (JLA) is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. -JLA Mission Statement

The League does not exist solely for the development of its members, but also for the development of the potential of women throughout our community. Three community programs are particularly important in meeting this mission: Con Mi MADRE; gENAustin; and Junior Achievement of Central Texas.

DEVELOPINg THE POTENTIAL OF WOMEN: CON MI MADRECon Mi MADRE is an organization devoted to providing educational and social support for Latina girls to prepare for post-secondary education. The most unique aspect of the program is that it involves both students and their mothers, recognizing that parental involvement often determines whether a student will achieve success. The importance of parental involvement cannot be overstated.

Con Mi MADRE will be awarding five $1,000 scholarships to qualified students who complete the organizations gRAD (girls Reaching A Dream) program for college students. In addition to providing 16 volunteers, the League contributes $500 towards these scholarships.

The scholarships support the community by defraying the expenses of higher education for the young women who have stuck with and completed the Con Mi MADRE program. Every scholarship dollar is a dollar that a young woman does not have to borrow from her future self to fund her education. Scholarships also recognize a students hard work and demonstrate our confidence in her potential. We believe that our investment will strengthen her own self-confidence.

Through its support of Con Mi Madre, The Junior League of Austin directly and positively influences the realization of the limitless potential of young women in the community.

IMPROVINg THE COMMuNITY: gENAuSTINThe gEN in gENAustin stands for girls Empowerment Network. Their purpose is to support and guide girls to make wise choices as they navigate the unique pressures of girlhood. They do this through various programs that give girls the opportunity to discuss body image, develop media literacy and foster healthy relationships. One of their programs, clubgEN, is an after-school program for girls in the fourth through eighth grades. The girls are surrounded

The League does not exist solely for the development of its members, but for the development of the potential of women throughout our community.

    Con Mi MADrE Students

by positive role models and they discuss diverse, relevant, and significant topics like bullying, healthy relationships, fitness and career exploration. Starting these discussions at this early age will ensure these girls continue them for the rest of their lives and with following generations of young people.

gENAustin also holds the statewide annual We Are girls Conference, for girls in the third through twelfth grade and the adults who care about them. The conference features speakers and workshops addressing issues such as social media, financial literacy and enhancing parent-daughter communication.

gENAustin conducts workshops through the 180 Program. These workshops address challenges faced by many girls today and additionally offer programs for girls who are either involved with or at a high-risk of becoming involved with the juvenile justice system. girls who are empowered to make healthy choices and who are given the tools to seek positive relationships with themselves and with others become girls who grow into leaders and are members of a strong and loving community. These programs not only positively affect the girls in the programs, but also the girls and boys with whom they interact. This is what The Junior League of Austin seeks for our community.

EFFECTIVE ACTION AND LEADERSHIP: JuNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF CENTRAL TExASJunior Achievement is the worlds largest organization dedicated to the education of elementary, middle, and high school students in real-world business, job and financial skills. The stated mission of Junior Achievement of Central Texas is to educate, and inspire young people the value of free enterprise, business, and economics in order to improve the quality of their lives.

In elementary school, the goal is to broaden childrens horizons and open their eyes to the possibilities, including entrepreneurial possibilities, for their future. The skills they learn will help them be confident in their choices and the decision making process that gets them there.

Junior Achievement recognizes that middle school is a crossroads for many kids. At this age, some students dont see the connection between school work and future success. These students are likely to give up or drop out. Junior Achievement teaches the link between school achievement and real world success the link between school lessons and real world business concepts. For students in high school the programs focus on job readiness, financial management and business or career guidance.

Junior Achievement is effective. According to a study conducted by the organization, 92% of Junior Achievement alumni reported that being a JA student positively affected their future. Junior Achievement teaches young people leadership skills. The same study found that over 80% of former Junior Achievement alumni say their participation strengthened problem solving abilities, decision making, critical thinking and interpersonal communication skills. Through The Junior League of Austins volunteer and monetary support, the League contributes greatly to building future leaders and enabling these students success in our community.

HOLDING HANDS IN THE COMMuNITYBY AuDrEY MOrTON

It might be a natural instinct for women to want to helpespecially in times of crisis. The vulnerable among us call for our compassion and service.

CENTER FOR CHILD PROTECTIONMany of us have strong women in our lives who have influenced us. For example, Sarah Joyner, who volunteers at the Center for Child Protection (CCP), was inspired by her mom, who served on the Child Protective Services board in Tarrant County, mentored at a local elementary school and provided backpacks of food on weekends (similar to the FIT - Food In Tummies program). I wanted to have a placement that worked with kids and the Center for Child Protection was a great fit. Im thankful to be going back for a second year and to serve as Project Chair, Joyner said.

CCP offers two types of volunteer placements. The majority of the JLA volunteers at CCP are in whats called direct service placements, working directly with children and families who come in for forensic interviews, therapy, or medical appointments. When the families come in for forensic interviews, they come up to the playroom first. In the playroom volunteers play board games, or color, or play in the restaurant to help kids acclimate and feel safe before their forensic interviews with the staff and law enforcement, said Joyner.

The indirect service placements include Client Information Coordinator who tracks cases, a Marketing Support Specialist, and a new volunteer position this year, the Community Education Assistant. The Center is very excited to be expanding their Community Education programs this year and to have a designated JLA volunteer fulfill this role, Joyner said.

Information the volunteers receive during the training process opens their eyes to prevalence of abuse occuring in our community. Joyner said education and awareness are the first steps towards ending child abuse.

Playing games in the playroom makes a difference to that child. You give that child a bit of normalcy in an otherwise traumatic time, said Joyner. Even if youre wary of interacting directly with the families that come into the Center, volunteers can serve in an indirect support placement.

CHRISTI CENTERDuring the seven years that Jackie Connor has been in The Junior League of Austin shes volunteered with a lot of organizations that she hadnt crossed paths with before. Connor had never heard of the Christi Center before, but thought it sounded interesting and she researched its history. The Christi Center provides hope after the death of a loved one. They are a unique organization that focuses on grief support - mainly via peer support networks, community education and free therapeutic activities without a time limit.

My mom lost her mother when she was in her mid-20s. She was the oldest child and had to step up and help her dad in caring for her other siblings, and keeping their family going. I know she, my grandpa, and my aunts and uncles could have benefited from the services offered at the Christi Center, said Connor.

As JLAs Project Chair at the Christi Center, Connor welcomes new opportunities to improve leadership and management skills. Six JLA volunteers at the Christi Center help with bereavement support groups on Monday nights.

We offer a warm, inviting face to people when they visit the Christi Center. Many of them will be new and nervous and dealing with a lot of emotion, said Connor. Last year was our first with the Christi Center, and weve already been warmly welcomed back.

She said peer support is very important to the Christi Center. Connecting with people who have a similar experience is very effective in the healing process.

    JLA volunteers supporting the community

I hope that I can make a difference for someone who is brand new to the Christi Center and isnt sure its the place for them. My goal is to make them feel comfortable and help them through a small part of their journey, Connor said.

Some of these women fear that they will be arrested just for talking back to a man in public. They simply live in fear. Having a JLA member as a contact will empower these women to realize their rights, and also empower themselves to be strong, independent, self-sufficient women.

COuRT APPOINTED SPECIAL ADVOCATESBefore Emily Schanne became a child advocate with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Travis County, she wanted to make sure she was ready and able to make the time commitment. Her mother, a forensic interviewer for the Childrens Advocacy Center of Central Texas familiar with the CASA organization, gave her a little nudge.

CASAs duty is to represent in the court system the best interest of a child who has been abused and/or neglected. This support requires spending time with the child, talking to parents, family members, social workers, school officials, therapists, teachers and others who are knowledgeable about the childs life, then gathering information and preparing recommendations on the childs needs.

These children receive therapy and health care, do better in school and receive a safe, permanent home. Children whose needs are being met are more likely to grow into responsible, productive, happy adults, which benefits the entire community.

Last year CASA advocated for 1,605 children, approximately 79% of the total number of children in CPS care in Austin. More CASA volunteers are needed.

CASA is an amazing organization and a great placement. Although it requires a significant amount of training, it prepares you to be the best advocate for a child, which is extremely rewarding. CASA volunteers make a real difference in the lives of children, said Schanne.

    JLA volunteers undergo CASA training

CENTER FOR SuRVIVORS OF TORTuRELeti Mireles has always been interested in international humanitarian work. Shes traveled to uganda and Mexico to volunteer with a summer art program for children. Back in the states, she wants to help people who are living in our community by volunteering with the Center for Survivors of Torture (CST).

What Ive learned from CST is that my volunteer work has nothing to do with the unfortunate details of their clients past. It has everything to do with their clients future and integrating them into our community so that they may live comfortably, said Mireles. Mireles is currently paired with a widow from the Congo who has three kids.

Volunteers help their clients assimilate to Austin through activities such as learning bus routes, speaking and practicing English, helping with resumes, brainstorming job opportunities and taking them into the community.

The women of The Junior League of Austin are empowered, strong women who are movers and shakers, said Mireles. I think it is especially important for the Center for Survivors of Tortures female clients to realize their rights in America. Some of these women fear that they will be arrested just for talking back to a man in public. They simply live in fear. Having a JLA member as a contact will empower these women to realize their rights, and also empower themselves to be strong, independent, self-sufficient women.

ASSISTING Our ANIMAL AMIGOSBY AuDrEY MOrTON

AuSTIN ZOO AND SANCTuARYDaniela Rivero joined The Junior League of Austin (JLA) to serve her community. Since shes around people all day, shes opted to help our furry four-legged friends at the Austin Zoo and Sanctuary.

What drew me to the zoo is their mission to rescue animals, give them a forever sanctuary to live their natural life and raise awareness in the community, said Rivero. I was drawn to chair this project and its an easy way to test out my leadership interest in JLA and also develop my skills as a leader.

The Animal Zoo and Sanctuary needs volunteers to spread their mission of awareness of wild animals and the threats that exist which may harm them. In addition, since the Austin Zoo is primarily funded by patrons and donors, it is essential that others witness the great things happening at the zoo and decide if they can contribute in some way to the rescues and rehabilitated animals.

This year, JLA volunteers are working as Zoo Docents in the Big Cat area. Our job is to tell visitors all of the wonderful stories that each animal brings to the Austin Zoo. Each of the animals has a name and story of how they arrived at the zoo and its our job to tell visitors those sometimes sad but also happy stories, Rivero said. At the end of the day, JLA is here to add to the fun, but also create a more educated Austin about our friends who live at the Austin Zoo.

Rivero strongly believes that the JLA makes a difference for the Austin Zoo. Through our story telling, we hope to raise a generation of more responsible pet owners who know the difference between a good pet and an animal that belongs in the wild. And moreover, we want to create a wonderful experience for visitors so they will come back in years to come and support the mission of the Austin Zoo, said Rivero. As for being a project chair and leading a group of volunteers this year, Rivero advises those seeking leadership roles to dive in and take risks.

AuSTIN HuMANE SOCIETYIts a given that Lauren Cadell chose her placement with Austin Humane Society (AHS) because she loves animals. Austin has such a high demand for rescues and Adoptions Counselor sounded like such an important role. There are several off-site adoption events so I knew itd be a fun volunteer placement with opportunities other than just working at the shelter. Becoming a pet owner is a huge responsibility and I wanted to make a

difference for those looking to adopt, said Cadell.

JLA volunteers for AHS select which program they participate indogs or cats. Volunteers are responsible for socializing, light training, making sure the furry, four-legged critters have adequate care, cleaning and upkeep to have a pleasant environment. Some volunteers even walk dogs.

Shes noticed that volunteers are crucial to AHS. JLA members make a huge difference. AHS does a great job of training and creating structure, but there are so many animals to take care of. It may seem like just sitting with kittens for an hour, but as those strays learn to interact with humans in an affectionate manner, it increases their chances of being adopted, Cadell said. The dogs spend the majority of their day in the kennel so being able to walk or let them out is very rewarding. Having JLA members get involved and spread awareness definitely increases the amount of adoptions.

I was drawn to chair this project and its an easy way to test out my leadership interest in JLA and also develop my skills as a leader.

A CHrISTMAS AFFAIr:CrEATING A COMMuNITY OF POSSIBILITIESBY ANNE PETErS

When I think of A Christmas Affair, I think of:

the decorations and music, which make the shopping experience feel a bit magical Jennifer Jackson, community member.

a cornucopia of shopping options! Kelly Lowe, community member.

A Christmas Affair (ACA) is widely known as a giant holiday market, a fun place to shop with friends, and an event kicking off the holiday season here in Austin. Shoppers - 6,000 of them each day - come from all over Texas to a single destination where they can find treats for themselves and unique gifts for others. Its a chance for local and small businesses to show off their wares. The beautiful decorations elevate the experience to something that Austinites and tourists cannot find anywhere else. Even Santa Claus makes a special preseason appearance to meet children for brunch and photos.

There is no denying that A Christmas Affair is an amazingly successful fundraiser for The Junior League of Austin, raising over $750,000 annually to support the Central Texas community.

While you can shop elsewhere for holiday gifts, remember that your support of A Christmas Affair means you are supporting positive change in our community.

THE JuNIOr LEAGuE OF AuSTIN: MEETING THE NEEDS OF A GrOWING CITYBY JuL IE BErGSTrOM

Each day in Austin we look around to see a city growing up before our eyes. While much of the growth in our city is a cause for celebration, in other cases the growth poses new challenges. The Junior League of Austin (JLA) is celebrating over 80 years of community partnership and some growing up of our own.

Released in 2013, the City of Austin Community Needs Assessment shows Austin to have an increasing poverty rate. If the rate were to continue to increase into 2014, it was projected that 1 in 3 persons under 18 would be living below the poverty rate. In response, each year over 2,400 League members provide more than 100,000 volunteer hours in our community. Members work to fight poverty through numerous community projects, and through signature League programs such as FIT - Food In Tummies and Coats for Kids. League member Samantha Bernstein witnessed first-hand the impact the League makes volunteering with Coats for Kids in 2013. We get there long before the sun comes up, and even on that frosty, cold morning, I saw a line of families wrapped around Palmer Auditorium waiting to get coats, said Samantha. The family at the front of the line had been waiting since the night before. The little girl was so determined to get a pink coat! In partnership with Jack Brown Cleaners, KASE 101 and KVuE, the League spearheads this annual initiative that has provided over 600,000 warm winter coats to children and teenagers in Central Texas. Samantha expressed, The anticipation gave me chills.

It was truly rewarding to see how all of our work benefitted so many families. It was gratifying to see that we are meeting the needs of our community.

In 2014, Hispanics represent the largest growth in Austin demographics. This year through the Spanish Immersion Program, League members receive Spanish training which they can use in agencies and placements across the city. Some volunteers will have no previous Spanish experience, while others polish rusty skills. Con Mi MADRE, a program created by The Junior League as the Austins Hispanic Mother-Daughter program, represents another way in which the League is working to meet the needs of Central Texans. In 1992, in Travis County a Latina baby girl had less than a 1% chance of obtaining a college education. In her 9th year volunteering with this program, Marisha Negovetich can testify to the dedication with which Con Mi MADRE works to increase the number of young Latinas pursuing and succeeding in post-secondary education. Con Mi MADRE has graduated almost 3,000 mother-daughter teams since its inception. When asked about Con Mi MADRE, Marisha said, Its such a joy to see these young girls turn into amazing young women, always with their mothers by their side, working to get them where they want to be. By assisting these young women and their mothers, we are helping them create better lives for themselves and their families, which will truly change the face of Austin.

As Austin continues to change, this year volunteers with the Done-in-a-Day (DIAD)

program will help non-profits meet the ever-growing needs of the city. Said Done-in-a-Day Committee member and researcher Liz Merkel, Were working with the Austin Zoo to help educate and entertain children, and with the Elisabet Ney Museum, umlauf Scuplture garden and Austin Nature and Science Center to improve their facilities for all to enjoy. Liz noted that DIAD is also working with Shoal Creek Conservancy in beautifying the city and the communitys green spaces. With more people in Austin, trash and waste increases and so does the need for beautification efforts and volunteers. Done-in-a-Day gives League members like Liz opportunities to give to a growing city, There is rarely a day I drive through the city that I dont see a place, agency, or building to which the JLA has sent volunteers or monetary assistance to help improve our community by providing better education or assistance to those who need help. It touches me greatly that we have so many women that make this happen.

There is rarely a day I drive through the city that I dont see a place, agency or building to which the JLA has sent volunteers or monetary assistance to help improve our community.

    -Liz Merkel

    JLA Done-In-a-Day Volunteers

The Junior League of Austin will grow too, as it builds a new home in Austin. When the League purchased our current Headquarters in 1983, membership totaled 975 women who served a population of 373,000 citizens. Nearly three decades later, JLA membership has nearly tripled and Austins population has tripled. As Austins need for critical non-profit support grows, our membership is ready to take on the challenge of serving the community beyond current expectations. The League is currently planning its new Headquarters in Northwest Austin, that in addition to serving the needs of the JLA, will also serve as a Community Impact Center. Our membership looks forward to the next 80 years and continuing to serve and grow in Austin.
