Market Outlook
10
Round Up – January 2018
11
➢ Union Budget presented by the FM was broadly in line with market expectations. Few important highlights are:
▪ Fiscal deficit maintained at 3.5% (FY18) and projected at 3.3% (FY19)▪ Focus on rural India and infra sector continued▪ Introduction of ‘National Health Protection Scheme’ to cover 10 crore families from the poor and deprived
section, is a big move for the healthier nation.▪ Big Employment generation measure: fixed term employment now extended to all the sectors. Govt will
contribute 12% of the wages of new employees in the EPF for all the sectors for next 3 years.▪ Income tax reduction to 25% for companies with turnover of less than Rs250 crs – a big positive for MSME
companies▪ Introduction of Long term Capital gain tax at 10%, above Rs1lakh, (12months+ holding) with grandfathering
clause for gains protected up to 31 Jan 2018.
➢ Earnings announced by corporates for 3QFY18 so far point towards improvement in underlying economy. Auto, cement and consumer companies reported decent volume growth (partly due to low base of 3QFY17), retailfocused banks/NBFCs also reported healthy growth, corporate focused private sector banks reported improvementin asset quality – a big positive, large infra driven companies like L&T indicated improvement in domestic orderbook and also execution.
➢ While benchmark indices like Sensex and NIFTY has made new high in Jan18, mid/small caps have witnessed goodcorrection. We believe that net of taxes, equity market still offers better returns potential and hence we do not seeany major adverse impact on equity markets in medium/long term. Key risks remain - Higher oil price and risingbond yields in global markets. Both these factors can lead to higher inflation and that can have adverse impact onvaluations. Hence earnings growth revival is critical for the market to perform from hereon. We continue torecommend investors to use any correction as an opportunity to add to Equity asset class with 3-5 years view.Needless to say, focus should be on companies with strong corporate governance, focused management and highearnings growth.
