Development of leadership skills is amajor emphasis of theprogram. Skills learnedin UIS honors coursescan be applied via numerous internship opportunities in community agenciesand organizations.

Academic AdvisingFreshmen and sophomores in the Honors program receive academicadvising from Honors faculty and staff centrally located in LincolnResidence Hall. The first semester as a CAP Scholar, students willdevelop their academic success plans with a faculty member.

Faculty in ResidenceLincoln Residence Hall is the focal point for a learning community inwhich students, faculty, and community members come together forenrichment activities. Illinois leaders from the public and privatesectors, representing scientific, artistic, and cultural interests, join withstudents for social and cultural events, workshops, and seminars.

Support StudiosSupplemental instruction is offered for both science and compositioncourses. Writing studio is a community of writing, writers, andwriting support. Students are provided guidance regarding researchtechniques, library resources, development of ideas, writing style andediting, and test support for science.

TutoringOn request, students are partnered outside of class with other CAPScholars in order to supplement learning and provide support inregular course offerings.

MentoringTransition support is provided to incoming freshmen by pairing them with experienced CAP Scholars. Mentors serve as guides fornavigating the new college experience, assist with networking andinvolvement opportunities for new students, and help to establishmeaningful connections between the student and the university.

Collaborative WorkClasses are designed to teach you to think clearly and creatively, tolearn quickly and efficiently, and to understand yourself and yourvalues. CAP students participate in learning teams in many courseassignments, learning not only the assigned material, but how to think interdisciplinarily and participate effectively as a member of a team.
