Building on its presence on the continent for well over a decade, GTR AFRICA returned to Cape Town on March 14-15. Now the definitive event for the key industry players in African trade, this year’s gathering welcomed a record attendance of around 400 representatives, all of whom were keen to discuss the unrivalled business opportunities found in Africa.
A packed agenda and innovative programme format provided the chance to hear from a wide range of experts, from government representatives to financiers, export credit agencies and corporate contractors, all of whom were keen to discuss the latest developments, challenges and opportunities to be found in the exciting and diverse Sub-Saharan market, as well as of course unrivalled opportunities to network and enjoy the more social aspects of the week in the fantastic setting of Cape Town!
We would like to thank all who sponsored, partnered and supported this year’s event, helping it to make it such a great success. We look forward to seeing you next year, with dates to follow over the coming weeks.
“Panel discussions are world class with superb participants.”

A calendar highlight for all involved, GTR’s annual flagship for the African market in Cape Town did not disappoint, attracting a record attendance of over 380 delegates. Here’s what we learned...
1. An ‘Africa’ strategy is nearly impossible
Perhaps as befits a continent of over 50 countries, the breadth and depth of market conditions, challenges and opportunities across different African markets and ever-shifting priorities means that the days of talking generically about ‘Africa’ are long gone, with some countries enjoying good times and other less good times. A Slido-based session which allowed delegates to pick the order of the markets they heard about added an element of spontaneity, keeping our speakers on their toes! Some interesting market selections too.
2. Engaging the private sector is key for sovereigns
We were honoured to welcome a delegation of senior representatives from the Government of Zimbabwe, led by George Guvamatanga, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Finance & Economic Development, who gave an impassioned address before asking members of his delegation to join him onstage to discuss funding for the country’s new healthcare programme and the role that international FIs can play in supporting. Nothing like hearing from the horse’s mouth!
3. Other markets have problems too
After years of occasionally condescending talk about the inefficiencies, corruption and systemic problems found in African political systems, how refreshing it must be to hear about the problems faced elsewhere, from Chinese and US
‘squabbling’ over their strategic presence on the continent to the UK preparing for a ‘bright new future’ post-Brexit. With hopes that the AfCFTA free trade agreement will further aid regional integration, you have an interesting potential dynamic here, with Africa becoming more globalised when other countries are becoming less so.
4. Technology is the true game changer
A popular format run elsewhere at various GTR events, our special technology showcase (complete with expert panel of judges - our trade finance ‘Dragons’ if you like) gave delegates an excellent opportunity to hear about an extensive range of offerings, from agricultural data analysis to supply chain transparency, deal origination to KYC due diligence. With a series of short and snappy pitches, it painted a fascinating picture of just how exciting such developments can prove in a market like Africa.
5. Hearts and minds rather than ATMs
Our closing panel utilised the Question Time format to make for an interactive discussion on achieving financial inclusion, addressing the thorny issue of ‘banking the unbanked’. Whilst it was made clear the great measures many are taking to collaborate with local parties to improve financial literacy, particularly for SMEs, what also became clear was the importance in seeking to change ingrained culture and behaviour in cash-based economies. Easier said than done of course!
“GTR Africa conference is the main event to understand the African trade market, with excellent networking opportunity.”
Cem Erseven, Cofco
“There were many engaging sessions and insights were gained which will assist in shaping one’s perspectives.”
Chidinma Lawanson, International Finance Corporation (IFC)
THAT’S A WRAP!
