CAWST co-leads the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) working group on Capacity Development (WG 1)
The ability of a sewered sanitation system to provide full-coverage, sustainable service to a community or city may be limited by cost, land requirements or lack of government capacity.
Non-sewered sanitation solutions are indispensable to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6:
access to sanitation facilities for everyone by 2030.
Non-sewered sanitation solutions are important because they:
Creating and sustaining demand for latrinesSelecting products and service approaches Monitoring and continuous improvementFinancing latrine implementationEvery step of the sanitation service, from the latrine to emptying, transportation, treatment and use/disposal of fecal sludge

EXPERTISECAWST develops the capacity of practitioners in a range of practical sanitation topics such as environmental sanitation, latrine design and construction, sustained use of latrines, and fecal sludge management.
SERVICES
We help sanitation program implementers—individuals, civil society organizations, local government agencies and entrepreneurs that implement sanitation programs for low- and medium-income families—gain practical knowledge and skills that can be applied immediately in communities and households.
Hygiene Village Project2015Malawi
The Hygiene Village Project, a local Malawian CSO, was faced with the challenge of monitoring a complex project involving sanitation promotion (community-led total sanitation), the training of masons and creating multiple Village Loans and Savings Associations. CAWST worked with them to develop a strong theory of change for their project, as well as new monitoring tools and systems to help them understand what intermediate changes were happening in the areas where they work. As a result, the client was able to better plan and assess their project using accurate data, rather than relying on instinct. This catalyzed improvements in their existing project, and paved the way for them to develop a model to plan and implement more complex and effective projects in the future.
Thank you for your help and support. With your help, our local team is ready to provide technical
support and advice to their communities in latrine construction to help villages meet their target of
being open defecation ‐free.” – Sayasin Khongsavath, WASH Coordinator

Combining theory and hands-on practice, we introduce basic sanitation solutions, using adult learning principles and participatory facilitation techniques
CAWST’s education program and development experts help individuals and organizations create, deliver and improve independent sanitation training and education programs. Through customized training and consulting services, we evaluate existing capacity building programs or assess opportunities for new programs, and support clients with training materials, delivery, overall program strategy and approach.
Eawag-Sandec2015-2016 Global Recognizing a significant capacity gap in the sanitation sector, CAWST and Eawag-Sandec developed an Introduction to Fecal Sludge Management workshop. We brought together complementary skills and experience in pedagogy and fecal sludge management, to have an even greater learning impact for participants.

Government of India, The National Institute for Urban Affairs, Ministry of Urban Development 2015-2016India
Under the Government of India’s “Clean India Mission”, the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) was appointed to build the capacity of government agencies and other sanitation service providers on decentralized sanitation. CAWST, invited by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, supported NIUA in designing, establishing, and strengthening a sanitation capacity building platform to act as a hub for knowledge sharing, collaboration and training among local organizations and government bodies.
