The scope of work required on this Project was the upgrade and expansion of the gravel runway at Rio Tinto’s Boolgeeda Aerodrome.

Joint venture partners Eastern Guruma and NRW, carried out the works which included over 300,000 cubic metres of fill to construct a 2.2 kilometre by 45 metre wide bitumen sealed runway, complete with a new taxiway and apron, serviced by a new access road and car park.

The Eastern Guruma and NRW Joint Venture has been contracted to undertake the bulk earthworks at Rio Tinto’s Nammuldi Below Water Table (NBWT) Project.

The project consists of earthworks for the processing plant, waste fine storage facility, mine service facilities, stockyard, an explosives compound, heavy vehicle haul roads, light vehicle roads, and a rail link with a train loading facility.

Eastern Guruma in a Joint Venture with Viento and Wirlu-Murra Yindjibarndi was awarded the contract for construction of the Tailings Storage Facility at Solomon Mine. The project involved construction of a 1.9 million cubic meter compacted wall to enclose tailings in a v-shape against the existing gully landscape. A decant pipe was fitted along the base of the wall and rock amour protection installed.

Eastern Guruma partnered with NRW in a joint venture to conduct early mining works at Western Turner Syncline. The project involved mining ore which was hauled to the Western Turner ROM pad with a fleet of 785 and 777 dump trucks. The ore was then hauled to the Tom Price mine via a 15 kilometre purpose built road using a fleet of four 350 ton pit hauler off highway road trains. The JV mined approximately 500,000 BCM per month to achieve the 6 million tonne per annum target.

The Western Turner Brockman project comprised of simultaneous works in two separate locations, approximately 45 kilometres apart and was carried out by the Eastern Guruma and NRW joint venture.

The first component was the bulk earthworks required for 16 kilometres of overland conveyor from the Western Turner Syncline mine to Tom Price. The second component was the civil works at the Brockman 4 Mine which included haul roads, ROM and ROM wall construction, access roads and earthworks preparation for a conveyor to the existing crusher and load out facility.

The Solomon Pre – Mining Development Works were undertaken by a Joint Venture with NRW, Eastern Guruma and Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation Limited (NYFL). The JV was initially awarded Solomon Phase 1 for works to supply labour and equipment to complete bulk earthworks, drill & blast and culvert installation at Fortescue’s Solomon Mine. In addition to the initial contract we were awarded temporary Magazine areas and construction of the LV1 access road.

Eastern Guruma in joint venture with NRW undertook the concrete and civil works at Western Turner Syncline Mine. The scope of works included the installation of approximately 21,000 cubic metres of concrete for the primary crusher, overland conveyor and plant utilities areas. The project also included the erection of a corrugated steel arch, minor earthworks, fencing and bollards.

Eastern Guruma and Wirlu-Murra Yindjibarndi have

created a unique Joint Venture between 2 Aboriginal

groups to deliver road maintenance and earthworks

services at Solomon Mine in the Pilbara Region of

Western Australia.

The two Aboriginal owned businesses came together

in 2013 to undertake the Solomon Road Maintenance

contract for Fortescue Metals Group. Eastern Guruma

brought with them years of experience working on similar

projects in the Civil and Mining Industry. Wirlu-Murra

Yindjibarndi was new to the Industry but shared Eastern

Guruma’s value of providing employment opportunities for

Aboriginal people.

The Joint Venture provided an opportunity for Eastern

Guruma to mentor Wirlu-Murra Yindjibarndi in building

a business with the capacity to undertake up to 50% of

the contracts at Solomon in the provision of plant and

personnel. Eastern Guruma is still the managing partner

of the Joint Venture which has expanded to include the

Resource Development Earthworks contract.

The project employs 49 people full time and approximately

40% Aboriginal employees. The scope of work for the

Solomon Road Maintenance Project is to maintain all

access roads at Solomon Mine in a safe and trafficable

manner including resurfacing, erecting signs, posts and

other safety. The Joint Venture supplies all plant and

people for the project and carries out regular maintenance

work on all equipment as required. The Resource

Development Earthworks project includes clearing and

earthworks for drill pads including access tracks and

rehabilitation works as directed by the client.

The partnership between Eastern Guruma and Wirlu

Murra Yindjibarndi has grown to become an efficient, safe

and reliable project team which is well respected by the

client and other contractors on site. This joint venture has

paved the way for further partnerships between Eastern

Guruma and other Aboriginal Groups.
