Welcome to Pamplona! CITY INTRODUCTION

PAMPLONA is the capital of the province of Navarre, the district that bears its name and used to be the capital of the old Kingdom of Navarre. It is located in what is practically the geographical centre of the province, the historical city taking up position on a terrace with a marked slope, at the bottom of which flows the River Arga. The name of the city comes from the Roman General Pompey the Great, who set up camp at the spot when winter arrived in 75-74 B.C. This military camp became a permanent post, giving rise to a stipendiary military city belonging to the Conventus Iuridicus of Caesaraugusta. The Romans found a local population which had lived in the area since the First Iron Age, VII or VI century B.C., none of those buildings remain, but some of those personal belongings have been unearthed. The remains of the Roman Pompaelo are on show at the Museum of Navarre.

In Pamplona you can walk around century-old walls and cobbled streets; rest in parks and terraces; try its delicious tapas (or pinchos as they’re known locally); visit historical monuments; attend great shows or watch traditional sports such as Basque pelota. Furthermore, its central location makes it the perfect place from which to discover the region’s diversity at your leisure.

LACLa Ciudadela (The Citadel)

1 Sights & Landmarks

Together with the Vuelta del Castillo, which surrounds it, the Citadel makes up the great green space in Pamplona, 280,000 square metres in which pavilions, moats, bastions, ravelins, fortifitions, other buildings and gentle slopes are places where the city‘s inhabitants can relax or enjoy

sport or culture. The Citadel, the main architectural focal point in the city of Pamplona, is also considered the best example of military architecture from the Spanish Renaissance and one of the most outstanding defensive fortifications to have been designed in Europe.

ADPAyuntamiento de Pamplona (Pamplona City Hall)

When a fleeting moment becomes everlasting, it conserves all the intensity of that which made it valuable. Perhaps this was the

The City Hall is in the heart of the Old Quarter of the city, and its site is not a coincidence. In 1423 King Carlos III (“el Noble”) of Navarre enacted a law called “El Privilegio de la Unión” (Privilege of the Union) to put an end to centuries of bickering and confrontations between the three boroughs and located the building on the spot where the three boroughs that existed at the time (Navarrería, San Saturnino and San Nicolás) came together.

PDNPalacio de Navarra (Palace of Navarre)

In the heart of Pamplona, between the Plaza del Castillo and the Paseo de Sarasate, stands the Palacio de Navarra, seat of the Presidency of the Regional Government and a number of

administrative offices of Navarre. The complex, designed by José de Nagusia in 1840, is a palatial building in a serious, powerful and solemn neo-Classical style that is surrounded by several columns.

IDSNIglesia de San Nicolás (Church of Saint Nicholas)

ISSAIglesia de San Saturnino (Church of San Cernin)

The parish of San Nicolás, which dates from the 12th century, was not created just to offer religious services but, above all, to serve as a military and defensive bastion of the people who lived in the borough of the same name. These people were involved in endless

disputes and skirmishes with the other two boroughs in the (Navarrería and San Saturnino). In 1222, during one of these attacks a fire burned the old Romanesque church-fortress to the ground, so it was necessary to build a new one, which was consecrated in 1231.

Occupying the site which, in years past, was the Palace of the Kings of Navarre, the Royal and General Archive of Navarre, deep within the same city walls, is one of the most ancient and emblematic historical buildings in Navarre.

The 13th-century church of San Saturnino (or San Cernin), the patron saint of Pamplona, was not just the religious heart of the borough of the same name. Its two high towers, which are an essential and emblematic part of the skyline of the city, and its powerful, thick walls reveal its historical function: a defensive fortress in the frequent skirmishes and battles between the three medieval boroughs of the city.

MUDNMuseo Universidad de Navarra (Museum of the University of Navarre)

2Museums

This museum covering 11,000 m2, designed by Rafael Moneo, stands in the natural setting of the campus of the Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona. It houses two collections, one of contemporary art and the other of photography.

The art collection, bequeathed by María Josefa Huarte, consists of around fifty paintings and sculptures, including pieces by renowned artists such as Picasso, Kandinsky, Tàpies, Chillida and Oteiza.

MPSMuseo Pablo Sarasate (Pablo Sarasate Museum)

You may have decided to get to know the historic quarter of Pamplona because of the reputation of its bars and shops, or just through the enjoyable experience of strolling through the streets. On your route you might go down calle Santo Domingo

The legacy that the renowned violinist and composer from Pamplona Pablo Sarasate donated to the city where he was born can be seen in the restored Palacio Condestable. This historical noble house, located where Mayor and Jarauta streets meet, is the only

CDACCentro de Arte Contemporáneo „HuArte“ (Centre of Contemporary Art “HuArte”)

Dominating what was once the Burgh of La Navarrería, the Cathedral of Santa María of Pamplona soars elegantly above the city. The Diocese and Cathe-dral Museum complete the buildings in the complex (almost all of them Gothic: Cathedral, cloister, Barbazana chapel, refectory, kitchen and cellar). There are also archaeological digs under way and works of art on display in the different parts of the cathedral.

Located in Huarte, 3 miles from Pamplona, this centre presents itself as one of the most important contemporary art centres around.

The building was designed by the architects Franc Fernández de Eduardo, Carles Puig and Xavier Vancells.

CASMCatedral de Santa María (Pamplona Cathedral)

Situated on the edge of the Casco Viejo (Old Quarter) of Pamplona, in the same site that the old Roman city of Pompaelo once stood, is Pamplona Cathedral, a fine example of the Gothic period

(14th and 15th centuries). This symbolic monument houses the largest number of historic and artistic relics in the city. Kings were crowned and Parliaments convened in the catedral.

the city that can be visited with guides, as the fortifications of Pamplona are included in the Route of Castles and Fortresses.

JDLTJardines de la Taconera (Taconera Gardens)

The Taconera Gardens are the oldest and most beautiful and emblematic park in Pamplona. Its 90,000 square meters are located near the old city walls very close to the Old Quarter of the city, and

the park has a marked romantic and Versaillesque character. It combines trees and flowers with a wide range of sculptures to offer the visitor a series of different itineraries.

PDLMParque de La Media Luna (Media Luna Park)

Pamplona is a university city. It has three universities and two campuses, and although they are located near each other – both are located on the south side of the city along the river Sadar-, they are clearly different in aesthetic terms.

Around the city centre of Pamplona, in the Segundo Ensanche and at the southern end of the city walls, is the Parque de la Media Luna (literally, “half-moon park”), one of the oldest and most beauti-

ful parks in the city. It owes its name to its design in the form of a waning moon. A leafy and romantic place, the park has excellent views from its elevated position over the river Arga and the hills beyond.

PAYParque Yamaguchi (Yamaguchi Park)

The river that flows through Pamplona is called the Arga. And its course has become a co-lourful nature walk of around 12 kilometres. It also has a long and winding river walk, the Parque Fluvial, which meanders along about 12 kilometres. The million square metres it covers make it the first and largest green space in the city. This route is a river park, a symbiosis of water and

Pamplona is splashed with beautiful patches of green, but there is none quite like Yamaguchi Park: it covers 85,000 square metres in one of the most modern areas of the city. The park is a symbol of the twinning of the cities of Pamplona and Yamaguchi, which is very close to Hiroshima.

The cities were twinned in 1980 in memory of the evangelising visit to Japan in the 16th century by St. Francis Xavier, patron saint of Navarre.

4 City Icons

If the streets of Pamplona are the main stage for the world famous San Fermín festival, the Saint’s Chapel, situated inside the Church of San Lorenzo, acts as the focal point for the faith-ful, who meet there to celebrate

religious events in honour of the city’s patron saint. The City Coun-cil attends the church in full ce-remonial regalia on July 6th every year, just a few hours after the “chupinazo” (ceremonial rocket) that inaugurates the festivity.

The Pamplona Planetarium is a cultural centre that enables the public to come directly into contact with astronomy and the mysteries of the universe. Without moving from their chairs, visitors watching the shows begin a journey through space during

which they can see 9,000 stars, accelerate the passage of time by hours, days and years, discover new firmaments, observe the birth and death of a star, escape from the laws of space and time and witness the birth of the universe itself.

CDCCámara de Comptos

Situated in the heart of Pamplona, between the Citadela and the Parliament of Navarre, is the Baluarte Auditorium and Congress

The Cámara de Comptos, built in the 13th century, is the only civil Gothic building that has survived in Pamplona. Declared a National Monument in 1868, it is an essen-tial place to see during a stay in the city. Located in calle Ansoleaga in the Old Quarter, it was a noble house before becoming what it continues to be today: the seat of the Cámara de Comptos, i.e. the Accounts Tribunal for the Kingdom of Navarre that initially existed between 1524 and 1836.

Centre, a clear example of modern architecture in the city that now acts as the cultural and congressional reference point for the region.

CIFPCentro de Interpretación de las Fortificaciones de Pamplona (Interpretation Centre of Fortifications of Pamplona)

This historical building, located at the junction of Mayor and Jarauta Streets, is the only example of 16th-century civil architecture in Pamplona. To learn of the origins of the palace it is necessary to go back to 1548, the year in which Luis de Beaumont, ‘Condestable (constable) of Navarre’, bought 4 adjacent houses to extend his own, on the corner of Mayor Street.

What is a ravelin? A counterguard? A small fort? A barracks? A bastion? The answers to these (and other) questions can be found in the Interpretation Centre of Fortifications of Pamplona. Located in the Fortín de San

Bartolomé at the end of the Media Luna park very close to the bullring and the Labrit pelota court, this innovative space occupies the five bomb-proof barracks or vaults of the small fort, a strategic place within the city walls.
