The!origins!of!the!Society!can!be!traced!back!to!1863,!when!it!was!founded!as!Dumfries!and!Maxwelltown!Choral!
Society,!continuing!without!break!until!1915.!At!that!point!its!activities!appear!to!have!lapsed,!presumably!because!of!
the!First!World!War,!and,!although!a!few!minor!contributions!were!made!to!a!series!of!subscription!concerts!at!the!
Lyceum!Theatre!between!1919!and!1921,!no!formal!choral!activity!during!the!next!thirty!years!has!been!identified.!!

In!1943!Edward!Murray,!the!headmaster!of!St!John’s!School,!started!up!a!small!choir!which!met!on!Monday!evenings!
in!St!John’s!Church,!with!the!curate!accompanying!on!the!organ.!As!the!numbers!increased,!Murray!proposed!the!
formation!of!a!choral!society;!this!came!about,!and!the!first!concert!took!place!on!30th!March!1944,!with!Murray!
conducting!a!performance!of!Handel’s!Messiah!in!St!John’s!Church.!

EDWARD&TAYLOR&(Conductor)!!British!organist!and!choral!director,!Edward&Taylor,!is!currently!Assistant!Organist!at!Carlisle!Cathedral.!He!has!also!held!several!organ!scholarships!at!places!including!Ely!Cathedral!and!Leeds!Parish!Church.!!Edward&!holds!a!Bachelor!of!Music!Degree!from!the!University!of!Leeds!and!is!an!Associate!of!the!Royal!College!of!Organists.!He!has!studied!the!organ!with!the!late!David!Sanger,!Simon!Lindley!and!Henry!Fairs!and!attended!masterclasses!with!Naji!Hakim,!Thomas!Dahl!and!SophieJVéronique!CaucheferJChoplin!to!name!but!a!few.!!Edward&has!also!studied!at!the!Strasbourg!Conservatoire!in!France!with!Parisian!organist,!Christophe!Mantoux.!Edward!leads!a!busy!freelance!career!and!is!in!high!demand!as!a!concert!organist,!accompanist!and!chamber!musician,!travelling!extensively!in!the!UK!and!throughout!Europe.!!
Edward!is!active!as!a!choral!conductor!and!specialises!in!choral!workshops!for!children,!youth!choirs!and!‘Come!and!Sing’!events!for!adult!choirs.!He!has!conducted!many!large!scale!works!
including!Handel’s!Messiah,!Bach’s!St!John!Passion,!Dyson’s!Nebuchadnezzar!and!Ahoy!!and!Zimbe!!by!Alexander!L’Estrange.!He!is!Musical!Director!to!the!Penrith!Singers!in!Cumbria!as!well!as!Dumfries!Choral!Society.!Edward&is!also!the!Musical!Animateur!for!the!cathedral’s!‘Singing!Out’!outreach!project!in!which!he!leads!singing!in!Primary!Schools!throughout!Cumbria!and!hosts!choral!workshops!for!children,!working!with!over!750!children!each!year.!In!2009!he!coJfounded!the!Carlisle!Cathedral!Children’s!Choir,!Carlisle!Cantate,!who!perform!secular!music!regularly!in!concert!venues!across!Cumbria.!
As!a!Cathedral!musician,!Edward!plays!the!organ!for!seven!services!each!week!and!has!directed!the!Cathedral's!Youth!Choir!on!the!televised!BBC’s!Songs!of!Praise!programme,!Radio!4’s!Sunday!Morning!Worship!and!in!numerous!concerts!throughout!Cumbria.!He!has!organised!and!directed!the!choir!on!two!successful!tours!to!Brittany!in!2009!and!Mallorca!in!2013.!Edward&has!directed!the!choir!in!the!making!of!their!debut!CD!God!is!Gone!Up!with!a!Triumphant!Shout!in!collaboration!with!Borders!Brass!which!was!released!in!July!2014.!
Edward!has!appeared!on!several!CDs,!accompanying!the!Girls’!Choir!of!Ely!Cathedral!on!the!CD!Sing!Reign!of!Fair!Maid!on!the!Regent!label!in!2008,!the!Leeds!Liturgical!Choir!on!the!CD!Vox!Dei!in!2006!and!numerous!CDs!as!a!chorister!of!Ely!Cathedral!with!Hyperion!and!Priory!Records.!Edward!has!recently!recorded!his!debut!solo!organ!CD!with!Priory!Records.!!

Margaret&was!a!pupil!of!Mary!Moore!in!Edinburgh!and!a!member!of!the!Edinburgh!University!Singers!under!the!direction!of!Herrick!Bunney.!A!wellJknown!Dumfries!musician,!she!has!been!accompanist!of!Dumfries!Male!Voice!Choir!and!a!former!official!accompanist!to!Perform!in!Dumfries!(Dumfries!and!District!Competitive!Music!Festival).!She!is!organist!of!Irongray,!Lochrutton!and!Terregles!Church.!As!accompanist!to!the!Dumfries!and!Galloway!Chorus!and!in!a!similar!rôle!with!the!former!Dumfries!and!Galloway!Arts!Festival!Chorus,!Margaret!has!worked,!to!acclaim,!with!internationally!known!conductors!including!Christopher!Seaman,!Philip!Ledger,!Owain!Arwel!Hughes,!Takua!Yuasa!and!Christopher!Bell.!In!March!1996!Margaret&was!honoured!by!Dumfries!and!Galloway!Regional!Council!with!an!Artistic!Achievement!Award!in!recognition!of!the!very!great!contribution!she!makes!to!the!artistic!life!of!our!community!as!an!accompanist,!
and!in!November!2013!she!was!presented!with!a!Special!Award!commendation!for!her!services!to!music!as!a!culture!champion!nominee!at!the!Dumfries!and!Galloway!Life!People!of!the!Year!2012!Awards.!Margaret!has!been!Dumfries!Choral!Society’s!incomparable!accompanist!since!1975.!

After!27!years!as!a!Senior!Lecturer!in!Music!in!the!University!of!Edinburgh,!John!retired!from!teaching!in!2104.!However,!he!continues!as!University!Organist,!as!Director!of!the!Edinburgh!University!Singers,!and!he!continues!to!be!involved!with!the!Raymond!Russell!Collection!of!Early!Keyboard!Instruments!at!St!Cecilia's!Hall.!John!is!also!Director!of!Music!of!Old!Saint!Paul’s!Episcopal!Church!and!Edinburgh!City!Organist!with!duties!at!the!Usher!Hall.!He!gives!many!solo!recitals!both!in!the!UK!and!further!afield,!and!also!plays!regularly!with!several!ensembles,!covering!a!wide!range!of!musical!styles.!In!addition,!he!is!much!in!demand!as!a!continuo!player,!accompanist,!lecturer,!writer,!adjudicator!and!reviewer.!John!has!recorded!extensively!for!the!EdinburghJbased!label,!Delphian!Records!(which!was!named!Gramophone!Label!of!the!Year!2014).!His!latest!Delphian!CD,!recorded!on!the!McEwan!Hall!organ,!was!released!in!2016.!!He!was!appointed!MBE!in!the!2016!Queen’s!Birthday!Honours!list.!

Henryk$Mikolaj$Górecki$(1933'D'2010):!Totus!Tuus!Henryk!Mikolaj!Górecki!was!a!Polish!composer!of!contemporary!classical!music.!He!was!largely!unknown!outside!Poland!until!the!mid!to!late!1980s.!His!fame!arrived!in!the!1990s!when!his!Third!Symphony,!Symphony'of'Sorrowful'Songs!was!recorded!and!released!to!commemorate!the!memory!of!those!lost!during!the!Holocaust.!It!became!a!worldwide!critical!and!commercial!success.!!He!composed!Totus!Tuus!in!1987!for!the!visit!of!Pope!John!Paul!II!to!Poland.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Totus!Tuus!

Gabriel$Fauré!(1845'D'1924):!Pavane!!Although!Fauré’s!Pavane!is!better!known!as!an!orchestral!piece,!it!was!originally!written!for!piano!and!chorus!in!1887.!Its!rhythm!comes!from!the!slow!processional!Spanish!court!dance!of!the!same!name.!From!the!outset,!the!Pavane!has!been!immensely!popular.!Tonight,!the!arrangement!is!for!an!organ!solo.!!
Organist:!John!Kitchen!!!!!!!!Edward$Elgar!(1857'D'1934):!Ave!Verum!Sir!Edward!Elgar!was!an!English!composer,!professional!orchestral!violinist,!organist!and!teacher!of!music.!It!was!not!until!he!was!42!that!he!became!established!as!the!preReminent!composer!of!his!generation!and!it!was!his!Enigma'Variations!that!brought!him!this!recognition.!His!work,!The'Dream'of'Gerontius!for!soloists,!choir!and!orchestra!followed!as!well!as!concertos!for!violin!and!cello!and!two!symphonies.!One!of!his!best!known!works!is!the!first!of!five!Pomp'and'Circumstance'Marches,!performed!each!year!at!the!Last!Night!of!the!Proms.!He!was!knighted!in!1904.$$The!Ave'Verum!was!composed!prior!to!this!in!1887,!as!the!first!of!Three!motets,!while!he!was!organist!at!St!George’s!Church!in!Worcester.!!!

César$Franck!(1822'D'1890):!Panis!angelicus!César!Franck!was!born!in!Liège,!in!what!is!now!Belgium,!though!at!that!time!was!part!of!the!Netherlands.!He!studied!and!lived!for!most!of!his!life!in!Paris,!taking!French!nationality.!He!was!a!composer,!pianist,!organist!and!teacher.!As!an!organist,!he!was!skilled!in!improvisation.!He!was!considered!by!many!to!be!the!greatest!composer!of!organ!music!after!Bach.!!Despite!his!many!compositions!for!organ,!piano!and!orchestra,!Panis'angelicus!is!possibly!the!piece!most!associated!with!Franck,!originally!written!for!tenor!solo!with!organ!and!string!accompaniment.!!It!has!since!had!many!arrangements,!has!been!recorded!hundreds!of!times!and!is!regularly!performed!throughout!the!world.!!!

Luigi%Cherubini!!(1760&1842):!Requiem!in!C!Minor!!Born!in!Florence!on!14th!September!1760,!Maria!Luigi!Carlo!Zenobio!Salvatore!Cherubini!was!the!tenth!of!12!children.!The!son!of!a!musician,!his!musical!life!spanned!the!transition!between!the!Classic!and!Romantic!periods.!With!financial!support!from!the!Grand!Duke!of!Tuscany!he!was!able!to!study!for!4!years!in!Bologna!and!Milan!under!the!well!respected!tutor,!Sarti.!!The!bulk!of!his!early!work!consists!of!sacred!music!but!his!later!compositions!centred!around!the!musical!stage,!writing!15!Italian!and!14!French!operas.!!After!a!period!in!London!during!1784/85,!where!he!presented!some!of!his!operas,!he!settled!in!Paris!in!1786.!In!1795!became!an!inspector!at!the!newly!established!Paris!Conservatoire.!He!suffered!much!from!the!hostile!attitude!of!Napoleon!whose!followers!harassed!and!even!pursued!him!as!far!as!Vienna.!Only!after!Napoleon’s!downfall!and!the!restoration!of!the!
monarchy!in!1816!did!Cherubini’s!fortunes!change!for!the!better!when!he!was!appointed!to!the!office!of!Superintendent!of!the!Royal!Chapel.!!In!1824,!he!became!Director!of!the!Paris!Conservatoire!holding!this!post!until!shortly!before!his!death!in!1842.!!His!Requiem1in1C1minor!was!composed!in!1815/16!bearing!the!original!title!Messe1de1Requiem.!It!was!written!at!the!request!of!King!Louis!XVIII!for!the!memorial!service!to!Louis!XVI!who!had!been!executed!by!guillotine!during!the!French!revolution.!The!first!performance!of!this!“Royal!Requiem”!took!place!on!21st!January!1816!in!the!crypt!of!St.!Denis!before!a!large!audience.!It!went!on!to!enjoy!such!increasing!popularity!in!Paris!that!Hector!Berlioz!was!prompted!to!comment!that!it!was!being!performed!so!often!as!to!seem!to!monopolise!the!music!scene!there.!!It!received!an!historical!performance!in!1834!when!the!Archbishop!of!Paris!raised!objections!to!women!taking!part!in!the!funeral!service.!Cherubini!took!this!as!a!reason!for!his!composing,!in!1836,!a!second!Requiem1in1D1minor!for!male!voices!only!and!orchestra.!This!one!was!performed!at!his!own!funeral!in!1842.!!The!Requiem1in1C1minor!being!performed!tonight!starts!on!a!sombre!tone!with!the!Introitus1et1Kyrie!imploring!God!to!grant!eternal!rest!to!the!departed.!This!is!followed!by!the!Graduale,!which!increases!the!tension!and!anticipation!leading!to!the!Dies1Irae!–!the!dreaded!day!of!reckoning!when!all!we!sinners!must!account!before!God!for!our!life!on!earth.!!Here!in!the!seventh!bar!of!the!orchestral!introduction,!a!single!strike!on!a!gong!achieved!fame!and!censure!for!having!introduced!a!theatrical!effect!into!a!sacred!work!–!very!modern!and!avant!garde!in!its!day.!Against!this!criticism,!however,!Cherubini!seems!to!be!more!concerned!with!a!dramatic!accent!perhaps!influenced!by!wearing!his!operatic!hat.!This!feeling!certainly!comes!out!in!the!character!of!the!Dies1Irae!and!who!knows,!this!break!from!absolute!formality!perhaps!later!influenced!Verdi!to!compose!arguably!the!most!dramatic!Dies1Irae!in!his!highly!operatic!Requiem.!The!tension!eases!in!the!Offertorium!where!Christ!is!asked!to!intercede!on!behalf!of!the!souls!of!the!departed!and!leads!into!the!relatively!brief!Sanctus!praising!God!in!his!heaven.!The!short!Pie1Jesu!again!implores!Christ!to!grant!them!eternal!rest.!The!work!concludes!with!the!Agnus1Dei,!where!further!intercession!is!sought!for!God’s!eternal!light!to!shine!upon!the!soul!of!the!departed!and!grant!them!everlasting!peace.!!Beethoven!was!greatly!impressed!by!the!works!of!his!contemporary,!Cherubini,!and!studied!the!score!of!Cherubini’s!opera!Les1Deux1Journées!when!composing!his!own!only!opera!Fidelio.!Indeed,!Beethoven!so!regarded!Cherubini’s!work!and!in!particular!his!Requiem1in1C1minor!that!he!chose!it!for!his!own!funeral!service!in!1827.!Surely!no!greater!accolade!could!be!paid!by!one!great!composer!to!another.!!!
