Reduce clutter and use consistent materials and themes along the streetscape to create a coordinated landscape. Enhance community identity and localised character and seek community / stakeholder input. Use consistent materials and themes along the streetscape to create a coordinated landscape. Investigate opportunities for urban art that promotes community involvement and supports local identity. Improve appearance of railway bridge and utilise this landmark as a gateway to the centre. Work with VicTrack to improve accessibility and appearance of the station entrance and railway easement landscape. Review quality and aesthetics of fencing and paving. N This drawing forms part of the City of Boroondara's Shopping Centre Improvement Plan (SCIP). It identifies issues and opportunities for improvement within the streetscape of this centre to be addressed as part of Council's ongoing improvement works. Based on an initial site evaluation this plan details some of the issues and opportunities identified for this centre. This drawing will be used to inform future concept design works and will be subject to a further review and public consultation as part of the detailed design. Typical improvements that will be considered include upgrading essential elements such as street trees, seats, bins, bike rails and footpaths, as well as a number of desirable elements including feature paving, additional landscaping and public art. Works will be progressively implemented across the 42 centres within the SCIP as part of the ongoing shopping centre improvement program. The SCIP is a long term plan and all works will be subject to Council’s budget allocations on a year by year basis. This is an 'Issues and Opportunities Plan' only and will be used to inform the future concept design for the centre. KEY OPPORTUNITIES Improve inegration and connections with Maling Road Shopping Centre by developing a 'master vision' or plan that incorporates both Maling Road Shopping Centre and Canterbury Village. Consider widening the footpath on the east side of Rochester Street at the intersection of Canterbury Road for additional planting and/or outdoor dining opportunities. Improve connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists accessing Balwyn Road and Shierlaw Avenue from Canterbury Gardens. In particular, review location of pedestrian crossing near Canterbury Road and Rochester Road intersection. Install additional seating on south side of Canterbury Road. Promote aerial bundling or underground services where feasible, to reduce visual clutter Improve lighting to encourage greater night-time use
