SCHOOL MANAGEMENT AND COMMUNICATION

Personal Learning Presentations 2018Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will develop Learning Presentations based on their Personal Learning Plans (PLP) for 2018. This is an initiative designed here at school to enable the students of these years to engage in their learning in a meaningful and goal oriented manner.

In Weeks 7 & 8 of Term 4 students will be able to deliver their Personal Learning Presentations to a parent or caregiver and a member of staff. This enables the students to consider their achievements throughout 2018. It also helps them to understand their individual learning needs, areas of strength and interest and acknowledge areas for improvement in 2019. Furthermore, it enables students to discuss examples of work undertaken throughout the year.

It is an opportunity for parents, caregivers and staff to see students reflect on their achievements and we believe this to be an invaluable process in the development of each individual student. We look forward to you joining us for your daughters’ presentations.

Year 9 Vodafone Code Next Challenge

CGHS has got some talented coders!

27 students from Year 9 have been taking part in the Code Next Challenge supported by the Coding Academy.

Day 1 students put on their “Website Designer” hats and learned how to manipulate existing websites and create a website from scratch using HTML and CSS coding. This was a successful day with all girls picking up the basics in a short period of time, and their problem-solving skills were just amazing! More so, their ability to communicate, collaborate and support each other in tackling a completely new skill was impressive.

Days 2 and 3 stepped things up a notch. Using a coding program called Ruby Rails, the students began working on their app develop skills and learned how to address and solve a problem through algorithm design and coding this to create an interactive website. They explored shopping carts, restaurant ordering menus and social media program codes. This presented a new challenge for the students, however they were able to grasp the key concepts of coding, but more importantly were able to demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills which are soft skills demanded

by employees. Many thanks to the Coding Academy Team and Mr Trinh for their support in troubleshooting and debugging!

Days 4 and 5 will be held later in the term and will see the girls finish their website app development and visit a technology company. More news to come in the next newsletter!

Year 8 STEM Project with Ashfield BoysThroughout term 3, Year 8 maths class 8MJ collaborated with Ashfield Boys High School in a STEM project. The STEM project was to research a chosen health or wellbeing issue that can be improved by an app which we created. We began the project by creating surveys for 12-15 year old girls and boys containing questions about an individuals health and lifestyle habits. We used the results of the surveys to collect data about issues we could fix using an app. We did this by finding out the mean, mode and median of the daily intake of fruits, vegetables and more. As part of the project, each group came up with a healthy recipe to cook. A few weeks later, both schools met up to cook the dishes which were later assessed by the panel of judges. All of the food that was made was delicious and healthy and we all had a great time doing it! Along with our app, we created a presentation which included the driving questions we answered throughout the weeks. In week 10, we pitched our app ideas to a set of judges who scored our project out of 180. All the groups did very well and it was overall very successful. Both schools really enjoyed participating in the project and everyone gained very valuable skills for the future. A big thank you to Ms Kaur and Ms Zubac for your hard work and preparation throughout this assignment and thank you to all the judges.

Snapshots from the Classroom Year 10 Work Experience

Last week I went to Work Experience, where I had the opportunity and pleasure of working with a Barrister. I was able to attend several court cases where I observed and learnt more about the court system. Between running from one court room to another, I had the pleasure of meeting amazing people who worked at all levels of the legal system. A bonus of working in city was eating delicious food at fancy cafes and restaurants. I enjoyed getting up every morning and loved the novelty of dressing up in corporate clothing. Running to catch the train was quite difficult in heels but having mastered them, could have played a game of soccer wearing them. By the end of the week I had attended a Local Court, a District Court and a Supreme Court. In the Supreme Court, I witnessed the ongoing case of Geoffrey Rush vs. The Daily Telegraph. There was not a dull moment. Each day was very exciting and adventurous. I am very thankful for the amazing opportunity I’ve been given. This experience has clarified the vocational direction I want to take.

Hospitality Work Experience

Hailie Hewitt (Year 10) recently completed a work experience at Bankstown Sports Club as a trial for a potential School-Based Apprenticeship offer. Hailie was exposed to a wide range of Kitchen and Hospitality operations relating to functions, buffets and restaurants. She demonstrated and further developed her knife skills, food presentation skills and the importance of working collaboratively in a team in the Hospitality Industry. We wish Hailie the best of luck as we await news and feedback from the club Management and Executive Chef.

Calamity Jane Theatre excursion Years 8 and 9 Drama elective students enjoyed a musical adaptation, suitably updated for the 2018 context, of the old favourite “Calamity Jane” at Belvoir St Theatre on September 20th in Term 3

HSC TextilesHSC Textiles Major Works were displayed in the Library for the school community to marvel at the stunning and intricate designs. With congratulations to class teacher Ms Ormanci, for supporting students throughout the process.

2019 Musical Production Work is currently underway by all the staff in the CAPA department and staff on the production team in readiness for our forthcoming school Musical for 2019 Tribe & Tribulation. The audition process has successfully concluded and rehearsals have commenced.

Our latest production is designed to be a vibrant musical which follows the adventures of several young people as they seek adventure and good fortune away from the dreary tedium of their hometown. The young people have to bond together and reflect upon what is important in their lives in order to understand what they really value. Throughout the course of their adventure they learn something about themselves and the differences between the ‘tribes’ that may be found in any community. Ultimately they learn the differences are largely only surface deep and it is the commonalities which are far more relevant.

Each production has differing requirements and varying demands for our young performers. The auditions allow staff to select students with the appropriate skills but also the match the student to the character and ensure that we have the experience and abilities of our older students transferred to the younger members of the school. The main cast and some Ensembles have commenced rehearsals with more students to be drawn into the process in the 2019 year. Students will be asked to sign a commitment contract and a payment is required to help defray the costs involved in this adventure. We look forward to working with all the students in a range of capacities from technical, musical, dance, drama, artistic and design. These are the dates of our performances in 2019:

Student HealthWell done Year 7 for making it through another round of vaccinations!

A reminder to families to keep the health details of your children up to date with the school. Any student with anaphylaxis/epipen, diabetes, epilepsy or severe asthma must have an up to date Health Care Plan with Emergency Response section completed. Any student who needs to take prescribed medication during the school day must arrange this through Office A – students cannot carry medications for safety reasons, they must be stored securely in Office A. The exception is epipens and asthma puffers.

Public Speaking

UN Youth Australia Voice Competition Three students from Year 7 competed in the UN Youth Australia Voice Competition. In Term three, Romy Brooks, Elise Martin and Evelyn Sanders prepared speeches which explored solutions to world problems. Some of the topics included subjects exploring animal rights in the Australian farming industry, accessibility to higher education, the ethical production and consumption of clothing and how the international community can combat the influence and potential spread of nuclear weapons. After presenting speeches, students were required to answer questions, impromptu, based on their topics.

Newington College hosted the competition, which was fiercely contested as the students competed at Newington College against schools such as Shore, Trinity and Santa Sabina. Evelyn Sanders will be going

through to the finals this term pitching a solution for the international community establishing more effective co-ordination in the processing of asylum seekers. We wish her all the best.

Debating At Monday Assembly in week 3 of term 4 we took the opportunity to congratulate all students years 7-10 who have participated in Debating throughout 2018

SRC News"The SRC movie night on the 21st of September was a great success! Everyone who attended was excited and in the family fun spirit as we all gathered together to enjoy a movie of our childhood, High School Musical, to evoke nostalgia. There was a thrill of excitement in the atmosphere as the SRC sold popcorn and lolly bags whilst the P&C provided their signature sausage sizzle as well as falafel, vegetarian wraps and choctop ice-creams. Overall the SRC movie night was a fun way to de stress, enjoy each other’s company and watch a family favourite movie as we ate some delicious snacks. It was a truly wonderful experience with smiles throughout the event."

SEA (Schools Environment Ambassadors) AnnouncementAccording to recent findings, NSW koalas could be extinct by 2050. The koala is a national icon and we cannot allow this to happen. Attached is an infographic with information on why this is occurring and what we can do to help. Scroll to the bottom of the infographic for links to official petitions which we encourage all to sign. For more information, SEA representatives will be coming to classes during DEAR time.
