Print M edia GuidelinesFollow these guidelines when selecting or loading p rint m edia:
Attemptin g to print on dam p, curled, wrinkled, or torn print m edia can cause
jam s an d poor prin t qu alit y.
Use cut -sheet paper o nly. You cannot u se multipar t pap er.
When using graph p aper, the lines m ay no t m atch because the 1/6-inch (4
m m ) line spacing of th e print er is slightly less than t hat o f graph p aper.
If the p rint density of your page is very h igh, light paper stock m ay cur l slightly
du e to th e large amou nt of ink. If you need to print dense graphics, try
pr intin g on h eavier stock.
Do not use thicker p aper than meets the specifications for th is unit. Printing
with paper th at is thick enou gh to com e in contact with the pr int h ead n ozzles
m ay damage the BJ cartridge.
Many m edia have a right side for p rin ting. If you are using such a m edium ,
m ake sure you set it in the m ulti-purp ose tray with the p rint side facing
upward.
Setting the Paper Thickness LeverBefore loading paper or o ther p rint m edia in th e multi-pu rpose tray, set the paper
thickness lever. The paper th ickness lever ad justs the gap between the p rint head
and the pr int paper to suit the papers thickness.
Set to the left (m) for paper and m ost other print m edia.
Set to th e right (A) for envelopes.
If the paper thickness lever is not set correctly before print ing, sm ud ging and
poor print quality may result.
If the paper thickness lever is not set correctly before print ing, sm ud ging and

Guidelines
When au tom atically feeding a stack of pap er in th e mu lti-pu rpose tray, follow
these guidelines:
To avoid paper jams and poor print quality, never try to pr int on dam p,curled, wrinkled, or torn paper.
Do n ot tr y to load paper into t he mu lti-pu rpose tray beyond the paper lim it

Certain environmental conditions, such as extreme temperatures or humidity,
can cause som e prin t m edia to feed incorrectly in th e mu lti-pur pose tray. If youhave trou ble with p rin t m edia becom ing skewed or m ultiple sheets being fed, do
not stack them in the m ulti-purp ose tray, but feed them one sheet at a tim e.n

Do n ot leave paper stacked in the m ulti-pu rpose tray for long periods of tim e;
longer sheets of paper m ay become ben t or curled over time. This may cause
the paper to m isfeed or jam .
Depending on the density of your printed pages, the ink m ay need time to dr y.
Within two or thr ee secon ds, the ink becom es sm ud ge resistant. After d rying
for several min utes, the ink becomes water resistant.
If you r pr inted page contains a large amou nt o f graphics, the ink on the page
m ay be dam p du e to the pr int d ensity. Leave the page in th e outp ut t ray for 30
to 60 secon ds to allow the ink to dr y. Then rem ove the page being careful not
to tou ch the docum ent tray (if it is open). Shou ld you dirty the docum ent tray
when removing the page, wipe it clean with a clean, soft, lint- free cloth
m oistened with water or diluted d ishwashing detergent solution .
The capacity of the paper ou tpu t tr ay is 50 sheets of pap er. To redu ce paperjam s, rem ove paper from the outp ut tray before the count reach es 50.
If paper curls after pr intin g, remove it imm ediately; oth erwise paper jams may
occur.
The platen (a roller on the inside of the un it) m ay becom e inked if you pr int
data beyond the width of the page. If this happ ens, clean the platen with a soft
cloth (see page 6-6).
Let the pap er run o ut b efore you refill the m ulti-pu rpose tray. Avoid mixing
new paper with pap er remain ing in the tray.
Use cut-sheet pap er on ly, not paper th at comes on a roll.
Do no t u se paper that is thicker th an specified for the Mu ltiPASS. Prin ting
with paper th at is thick enou gh to com e in contact with the pr int h ead n ozzles
m ay damage the BJ cartridge.

Using Canons Specialt y PapersThis section provides guidelines for pr intin g on Cano ns specialty papers and
describes special procedures required for high resolut ion paper, fabric sheets, and
bann er paper.
Specialty Paper Guidelines
Follow these guidelines:
When feeding transparencies, remove each sheet after it is delivered, beingcareful no t to tou ch the docum ent tr ay. Do n ot allow tran sparency sheets to
stack up in the ou tpu t tray. (Shou ld you dirty the docum ent tray when
removing the sheets, wipe the d ocum ent t ray clean with a clean, soft, lint -free
cloth m oistened with water or diluted dishwashing detergent solution .)
Let the pr inted sheets of transparency or paper d ry comp letely before stor ing
them.
When your outpu t has dr ied completely, cover its prin ted side with a sheet of
plain (n ot coated) p aper before stor ing it; th is is recomm ended even if you
place the sheets of film in a clear file or p lastic holder.
Be sure to read any instru ctions that come with your Canon specialty paper.
These instructions p rovide imp ortan t inform ation regarding h ow to achieve the

Do not leave film in th e mu lti-pu rpose tray for long p eriods of time. Dust an d
dirt m ay accumu late on the film resulting in spotty prin ting.
To avoid smu dging caused by fingerprin ts, use a pair of th in cloth gloves whileloading and hand ling film.
To avoid fading, do n ot expose print ed film to p rolonged sun light.
Store un used papers and film s flat. Do not remove papers from their
pro tective packaging u nt il you are ready to use them .
Store unu sed film at tem peratu res between 59 and 86F (15 and 30C). The
relative hum idity should be between 10% and 70%.
Printing on High Resolution PaperTo load High Resolution Paper in the MultiPASS, follow the sam e procedu re as for
loading paper in the m ulti-purp ose tray (see page 2-11). However, before prin ting,
be sure to r aise the pap er ou tpu t guides, as described below.
After u sing a package of H igh Resolution Paper, be sure to p erform the cleaning
operation d escribed o n page page 2-18.
Using the Paper Output Guides
When printin g on High Resolution Paper or Bann er Paper, use the guides on the
paper ou tpu t tr ay to h elp sup por t th e printed sheet as it exits the unit. This will
keep th e sheet from sagging and p ulling through the u nit as it exits, which can lead
to po or p rint qu ality.

Using the Cleaning Sheet
Cano ns High Resolution Paper is designed for h igh qu ality pr intin g. This paper is
specially coated to produ ce delicate color outpu t.
After u sing a package of H igh Resolution Paper (200 sheets) you need to use
the cleaning sheet, provided with th e paper, to rem ove paper d ust from the un its
rollers; this will help p revent paper feed p roblem s.
1. Make sure the paper thickness lever is set to the left m(see page 2-6).
Always raise both paper o utp ut gu ides.
Always lower the paper out pu t guides when u sing the MultiPASS as a fax
