    Introduction

Cleaning the Video HeadsDigital video camcorders record video signals on the tape in very thin lines (as thin as1/8 of the width of a hair). The following symptoms may appear if the video headsbecome dirty even a little.

Mosaic or other blocky video artifacts (Fig. 1) or banding(Fig. 2) appear on the picture during playback.• Sound becomes distorted, or there is no sound duringplayback.• The message “HEADS DIRTY, USE CLEANING CASSETTE”appears.

If such symptoms appear, clean the video heads with the CanonDVM-CL Digital Video Head Cleaning Cassette* or acommercially available dry cleaning cassette. If the symptoms reappear shortly after the cleaning, thevideocassette may be defective. Stop using it.* Availability differs from area to area.

Video heads may become dirty under the following conditions:

    • When using the camcorder in humid or hot places.• When using cassettes with damaged or dirty tape.• When using the camcorder in dusty places.

    • When using the video heads without cleaning them for a long time.

    NOTES

Before you make important recordings, clean the video heads and make a test recording first. Wealso recommend cleaning the video heads after use, before storing the camcorder. Do not use wet type cleaning cassettes as this may damage the camcorder. Even after cleaning the video heads you may not be able to play back correctly tapes that wererecorded with dirty video heads.

quality and as a result, also the availablerecording time ( 27). Previous recordings overwritten by a newrecording cannot be recovered. Before you startrecording, search for the end of the last

recording ( 24). To protect the tape and video heads, thecamcorder will enter the stop mode ( ) if left inrecord pause ( ) mode for 4 minutes 30seconds. To resume recording press . When recording in very loud places (such asfireworks shows or concerts), sound maybecome distorted or it may not be recorded atthe actual levels. This is not a malfunction. About the Power Save mode: To save powerwhen the camcorder is powered by a battery

pack, the camcorder will automatically shut off ifleft without any operations for 5 minutes( 29). To restore the power, turn thecamcorder off and then on again. About the LCD and viewfinder screen: Thescreens are produced using extremely high-precision manufacturing techniques, with morethan 99.99% of the pixels operating tospecification. Less than 0.01% of the pixelsmay occasionally misfire or appear as black, red, blue or green dots. This has no effect on

the recorded image and does not constitute amalfunction. When using a tripod: Do notleave the viewfinder exposed todirect sunlight as it may melt(due to concentration of the lightby the lens). Do not use tripodswith fastening screws longerthan 5.5 mm. Doing so maydamage the camcorder.

When recording movies, try to get a calm, stablepicture. Excessive camcorder movement while shootingand extensive use of fast zooms and panningcan result in fidgety, jittery scenes. In extremecases the playback of such scenes may resultin visually induced motion sickness. If youexperience such a reaction, immediately stopthe playback and take a rest break asnecessary.

    A d  d i   t  i   on al  I  nf   or m a t  i   on

    Do’s and Don’ts

    Camcorder

Do not carry the camcorder by the LCDpanel. Be careful when closing the LCDpanel. Do not leave the camcorder in placessubject to high temperatures (like theinside of a car under direct sunlight), orhigh humidity. Do not use the camcorder near strongelectric or magnetic fields such as aboveTVs, near plasma TVs or mobile phones. Do not point the lens or viewfinder atstrong light sources. Do not leave thecamcorder pointed at a bright subject. Do not use or store the camcorder industy or sandy places. The camcorder isnot waterproof – avoid also water, mud orsalt. If any of the above should get intothe camcorder it may damage thecamcorder and/or the lens.

Be careful of heat generated by lightingequipment. Do not disassemble the camcorder. Ifthe camcorder does not function properly, consult qualified service personnel. Handle the camcorder with care. Do notsubject the camcorder to shocks orvibration as this may cause damage.

    Battery Pack

Charged battery packs continue todischarge naturally. Therefore, chargethem on the day of use, or the day before,to ensure a full charge. Attach the terminal cover whenever abattery pack is not in use. Contact withmetallic objects may cause a short circuitand damage the battery pack. Dirty terminals may cause a poor

contact between the battery pack and thecamcorder. Wipe the terminals with a softcloth. Since storing a charged battery pack fora long time (about 1 year) can shorten itslifecycle or affect performance, werecommend to discharge the battery packfully and to store it in a dry place attemperatures no higher than 30   °C. If youdo not use the battery pack for long

periods, charge and discharge it fully atleast once a year. If you have more thanone battery pack, perform theseprecautions at the same time for allbattery packs. Although the battery pack’s operatingtemperature range is from 0   °C to 40   °C,the optimal range is from 10   °C to 30   °C.At cold temperatures, performance will

temporarily decline. Warm it in yourpocket before use.

    Handling Precautions

    DANGER!

Treat the battery pack with care.

    • Keep it away from fire (or it mightexplode).• Do not expose the battery pack totemperature higher than 60 °C. Do notleave it near a heater or inside a car inhot weather.• Do not try to disassemble or modify it.• Do not drop or knock it.• Do not get it wet.

    Cassette

Rewind tapes after use. A slack ordamaged tape may cause video problemsand/or audio distortions during playback. Return cassettes to the case and storethem upright. Rewind tapes from time totime if they are stored for a long time. Do not leave the cassette in the

camcorder after use. Do not use spliced tapes ornonstandard cassettes as they maydamage the camcorder. Do not use tapes that have been jammed as video heads may becomedirty. Do not insert anything into the smallholes of the cassette, or cover them withcellophane tape. Handle cassettes with care. Do notdrop or subject them to severe impact asthis may damage the cassettes.

With cassettes equipped with a memoryfunction, metal plated terminals maybecome dirty with use. Clean theterminals with a cotton swab after about10 times of removing and reinserting the

cassette. The memory function is notsupported by the camcorder.

    Protecting Tapes from Accidental Erasure

To protect your recordings from accidentalerasure, slide the tab on the cassette toSAVE or ERASE OFF.

    Lithium Button Battery

Do not pick up the battery usingtweezers or other metal tools as this willcause a short circuit. Wipe the battery with a clean dry clothto ensure proper contact. Keep the battery out of the reach ofchildren. If swallowed, seek medical
