    3. PRECAUTION FOR SERVICE

3.1 Precautions Concerning the Memory DataThis printer coun ts th e total waste ink am oun t for the black BJ cart ridge and t he color

BJ car t r idge an d s tores these da ta in th e EEPROM on th e control board. Observe thefollowing precautions during servicing.

    1) Checking EEPROM data

The n u mber of sheets pr in ted is counted an d s tored in the E EPROM to show the

printer operating s tatu s. This data can be printed by test print 3 (Ripple pat tern

    print).

The waste ink qua ntity dat a is also s tored in th e EEPROM. This dat a is u sed to

indicate a wast e ink full error to prevent ink leaka ge if th e am oun t of waste ink

    abs orbed becomes full.

    2) When replacing the control board

If th e cont rol board on which th e EEPROM is mou n ted is replaced, the qua nt ity of

waste ink abs orbed mu st be set in the EEPROM by visu ally checking the am oun t ofwas te ink absorbed in to the absorber from behind th e pr in ter ba se un it .

If it is n ot set , th e waste ink fu ll error is not d isplayed, an d ink ma y leak.

    3) When replacing the printer base unit

If a wast e ink fu ll error is displayed an d th e printer ba se u nit is replaced, th e waste

ink am oun t data in th e EEPROM mu st be set to zero. If it is n ot set to zero, a wast e

ink full error is displayed an d th e printer s t ops operating before the waste ink

absorber is filled with waste ink.

After th e EEPROM is rest , the da ta i t contained ca nn ot be printed ou t with

a tes t pr in tou t .If you wan t to check th e s tored data , be sure to execute test print out

    before resetting the EEPROM.

When the s tored da ta is rese t , both th e to ta l cou nt of pr in ted sheets an d

th e total wast e ink a mou nt will be reset together. Thes e sett ings can not

    be reset individually.

    4) Rewriting the flash ROM

The flash ROM on th e cont rol board serves as th e cont rol section of the printer. In

earlier models a s ocket type m ask ed ROM ha d to be u pgraded b y physically inserting

a n ew u pgraded mas ked ROM. The flash ROM can be rewrit ten an d h ence upgradingha s b een facili tated.

When flash ROM needs t o be upgrad ed, a FD conta ining the up grading program will

be dis tributed. Using this FD in a comp u ter, the flash ROM of th e printer can be

u pgraded. In order to rewrite th e flash ROM, both the printer an d compu ter need to

be set in th e rewrite modes.

For details on ch ecking th e mem ory dat a with t est print a nd for clearing

them , see Part 3: 3.6 EEPROM Data Setting (page 3-23).

When operation is s topped for th e waste ink full error, ha nd le the pr inter

as explained in Part 5: 5. TROUBLESHOOTING (page 5-5 ).When rewriting the flash ROM, refer to the settings in Part 3: 3.7 Rewriting

    the Flash ROM (page 3-26).

Recoverable errors by customer:1) Paper pick-up error:

Occur s when the p aper can not be fed pr operly.

    2 ) Paper deliv ery e rror:

Occur s when the pr in ted pa per cann ot be e jec ted.3) BJ Cartridge check:

Occurs wh en a BJ cartridge is n ot ins talled an d th e cartridge replacemen t mode is

term inated by the printer. This error is recovered once it enters th e cartridge

replacement m ode by holding down the CARTRIDGEbu t ton .

    4) Cartridge mis-match error:

Occur s when th e da ta in th e hos t compu ter does n ot match with th a t of the ins ta l led

cartridge. This error is recovered by holding down th e CARTRIDGEb u t t on a n d

insta lling th e correct cart ridge.

5 ) No batte ry error:

Occurs wh en th e lith ium ion bat tery is not insta lled in the printer. This error is

recovered by u np lu gging and re-plugging the DC jack of th e Universal ad apt er onceth e lith ium ion b attery is ins talled.

    6) Failed battery warning:

Occurs wh en th e printer detects a batt ery voltage lower tha n 7V. The print er begins

to rech ar ge the b att ery to bring u p th e voltage above 7V, however, if th e volta ge does

not r ise above 7V after 90 minu tes, recha rging is s topped . (At th is point , the p rinter

m ay sti ll be operated with an Universal ada pter.) Also occu rs when the reserve

recha rging cu rren t is lower th an a certain s et value while th e batt ery is rech arging.

Recha rging is s topped. (There is a p roblem with either the rech arging circu it or th e

ba tter y itself.) This war n ing is recovered by rem oving th e fau lty ba tter y an d replacing

    it with a new one.

Unrecoverable errors by the customer:7 ) ROM error:

Occurs when th e ROM check du ring th e init ializing opera tion fails .

    8 ) RAM error:

Occurs when the RAM check during the initializing operation fails.

    9) EEPROM error:

Occurs when th e EEPROM checking fu nction fails du ring every process.

    (eg. initialization, pr inting, etc...)

10 ) Home Posit ion error:

Occur s when the h ome pos it ion can not be de tec ted.

1 1 ) Wast e ink full error:Occurs wh en th e "total wast e ink am oun t" recorded on th e EEPROM exceeds th e
