  • Connectors for attachment directly to cable (line connectors) are supplied with a loose contact. Fitting to the cable isby either crimp or set-screw termination, the contact is then retained within the insulator body with a nylon cotter pin.

Secure coupling of a connector pair is through a bayonet lock together with a secondary locking pin. The secondary lockengages when the bayonet lock is fully turned and disconnection requires a simple release key. The secondary lock dis-courages tampering and reduces the risk of accidental or unauthorised disconnection. If fast disconnection is required, for an application where tampering is not a risk, the connectors can be fitted with a sliding collar that quickly unlocksthe connectors.

Cable connectors are fitted with cable glands to fit a wide range of cables. The cable glands, together with an interfa-cial seal, provide an ingress protection level of IP67 when mated.

    VEAM PowerLock

PowerLock connectors feature a bayonet coupling mechanism with a secondary locking pin. When a pair of connectorsare mated and fully turned to engage the bayonet, the spring loaded secondary locking pin on the Drain connectors, snaps into a slot on the Source connector; a special release key is then required to uncouple the connectors.

    Connector locking

    Coupling Un-Coupling

Uncoupled - Note the sec-ondary locking pin on theright hand connector andthe slot on the left handconnector.

Aligning the arrow lines upthe keyways allowing the connectors to be pushedtogether fully compressingthe locking pin.

Connectors are turnedclockwise and locking pinsnaps into the slot on themating half.

To uncouple, the releasekey, LL0023N is pushedinto the slot.

The release key is usedto push the locking pinout of the slot.

With the release keyholding the locking pinback, the connectorscan now be turnedcounter-clockwise anduncoupled.

Source – this the term used to describe the connector fitted with a male contact in a female housing, it is usually theconnector attached to the source of the power, i.e. the ‘live’ connector, the contact is fitted with an insulated end capto prevent accidental finger touching of live parts. Drain – this is the term used to describe the connector fitted with a female contact in a male housing, this is not nor-mally the live connector, however it does include a spring loaded insulated cap to prevent finger touching. The Drain connector is fitted with a secondary locking pin that locks into the mating half when the 2 connectors arefully engaged. A simple release key is required to disconnect the parts.Line – The line connector is the free connector fitted to a cable. Crimp or Set-Screw contacts are available for attach-ing the conductor.Panel – Panel connectors feature a square 4 hole flange for attaching to a panel. The 4 holes are normally suppliedopen, however can be pre-fitted with threaded inserts to reduce mounting time.

    VEAM Snaplock Introduction

The Snaplock connector series is a miniature power cable hook up system offering high current capability while main-taining minimal physical dimensions.

Snaplock offers a commercially viable option to historical hard wiring techniques. In addition, Snaplock offers improvedsafety characteristics through utilization of insulated bodies, sealing mechanisms, locking mechanisms and protectedcurrent carrying elements.

Snaplock connectors are available in a range of colors for simple identification of individual lines.

The contact elements are based on our proven Louvre band technology which ensures low contact resistance thusminimizing power loss, low physical insertion forces with a self wiping action, and high number of mating cycles. Themale contact elements are protected by a non-conductive tip which makes physical contact with the current carrying element impossible.

The contacts are held in the insulators via a clip retention system. Thisallows for fast, simple assembly and good retention of the contact sets, especially where vibration is an environmental concern.

Contact termination to the cable conductor is by standard compressioncrimp or set-screw fixing and for panel mounting a threaded M12 post. Connectors for panel mounting and cablemounting are available. All connectors are IP67 sealed when mated through utilization of integral sealing rings and cablegland strain relief.

The speed of connection and disconnection offers great savings in equipment down time, servicing and maintenanceprocedures. The security of the connection is maintained by a simple but very effective locking mechanism which can beutilized as a temporary or semi-permanent lock.

The spring loaded slide lock feature shown above locks into bayonet groove on the mating half, and can be disengagedby sliding back using ones thumb. This lock feature can be made semi-permanent by sliding the retainer forward.

    Product Safety and Warranty

    1. MATERIAL CONTENT AND PHYSICALFORMElectrical connectors do not usually containhazardous materials. They contain conduct-ing and non-conducting materials and canbe divided into two groups.a) Printed circuit types and low cost audiotypes which employ all plastic insulators andcasings.b) Rugged, Fire Barrier and High Reliabilitytypes with metal casings and either naturalrubber, synthetic rubber, plastic or glassinsulating materials. Contact materials varywith type of connector and also applicationand are usually manufactured from either:Copper, copper alloys, nickel, alumel, chromel or steel. In special applications, other alloys may be specified.

    2. FIRE CHARACTERISTICS AND ELECTRICSHOCK HAZARDThere is no fire hazard when the connec-tor is correctly wired and used within thespecified parameters. Incorrect wiring orassembly of the connector or careless useof metal tools or conductive fluids, ortransit damage to any of the componentparts may cause electric shock or burns.Live circuits must not be broken by sepa-rating mated connectors as this maycause arcing, ionization and burning. Heatdissipation is greater at maximum resistancein a circuit. Hot spots may occur when resist-ance is raised locally by damage, e.g.cracked or deformed contacts, brokenstrands of wire. Local overheating may alsoresult from the use of the incorrect applica-tion tools or from poor quality soldering orslack screw terminals. Overheating mayoccur if the ratings in the product DataSheet/Catalog are exceeded and can causebreakdown of insulation and hence electricshock. If heating is allowed to continue itintensifies by further increasing the localresistance through loss of temper of springcontacts, formation of oxide film on con-tacts and wires and leakage currentsthrough carbonization of insulation andtracking paths. Fire can then result in thepresence of combustible materials and thismay release noxious fumes. Overheatingmay not be visually apparent. Burns mayresult from touching overheated compo-nents.3. HANDLINGCare must be taken to avoid damage to any component parts of electrical connec-tors during installation and use. Althoughthere are normally no sharp edges, caremust be taken when handling certain com-ponents to avoid injury to fingers. Electricalconnectors may be damaged in transit to thecustomers, and damage may result in cre-ation of hazards. Products should thereforebe examined prior to installation/use andrejected if found to be damaged.

    4. DISPOSALIncineration of certain materials may releasenoxious or even toxic fumes.

    5. APPLICATIONConnectors with exposed contacts shouldnot be selected for use on the current supplyside of an electrical circuit, because an elec-tric shock could result from touchingexposed contacts on an unmated connector.Voltages in excess of 30 V ac or 42.5 V dc arepotentially hazardous and care should betaken to ensure that such voltages cannot betransmitted in any way to exposed metalparts of the connector body. The connectorand wiring should be checked, before mak-ing live, to have no damage to metal parts orinsulators, no solder blobs, loose strands, conducting lubricants, swarf, or any otherundesired conducting particles. Circuitresistance and continuity check should bemade to make certain that there are no highresistance joints or spurious conductingpaths. Always use the correct applicationtools as specified in the Data Sheet/Catalog.Do not permit untrained personnel to wire, assemble or tamper with connectors. Foroperation voltage please see appropriatenational regulations.

IMPORTANT GENERAL INFORMATION(i) Air and creepage paths/Operating volt-age.
