Introduction
In June 2014 Burntwood Family History Group received an email from Trevor Woodham of St Luke’s Church Cannock telling us about their project celebrating900 years of the church in 2015 and their intention as part of the commemorations to set up a display with details of the WW1 servicemen whose names were
engraved on the War Memorial in Cannock town centre. The display was to be placed under a WW1 memorial window in the church and Trevor asked if BFHGmight have any records already available that he could use for the project. Our name had come to his attention due to our ongoing project researching individualWW1 servicemen from various war memorials in Burntwood and surrounding areas. Unfortunately, BFHG did not have any collective records of the men listed
on the Cannock Memorial; and as far as we knew there was no one who had compiled such a list.
At that particular time as I was not researching any individual serviceman as part of our project I offered to have a look at all the names listed and see if I could puttogether some details that Trevor would be able to use. During the following three months by using two main Internet web sites “Commonwealth War Graves
Commission” and “Find My Past” I was able to compile a reasonable amount of basic detail on most of the servicemen listed which I then passed onto Trevor forhim to display in the church. On completion of the details I felt that it would be nice if the information were also put into a folder and on to a web site as part of the
BFHG Memorial project and also for other Cannock establishments to have a copy if they so wished.
The following pages lists the information found on each serviceman in the order that the names appear on the memorial, generally speaking the names are inalphabetical order but there are some out of sequence. In some cases only initials were used on the engravings, so wherever possible I have listed eachserviceman’s full name. During the research I have come across some errors on the memorial engravings and I have noted these where appropriate.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find details on all the names listed, sometimes I was able to find a person with a matching name but there was nothing toindicate that he had any Cannock connections and also in some cases there were numerous servicemen with the same name who had died none of whom had a
reference to Cannock therefore it was impossible for me to identify the right person. From the 129 names on the Memorial I have found details on 120, 2 of whichhave an alternative option. Of course, for many of the servicemen there will be more details available from other genealogical sources particularly local
newspapers from the WW1 era and I may at some time in the future look at those to see if I can add further to the information already found
Throughout the research I have found some servicemen with Cannock connections that died in WW1 whose names do not appear on the Market Place Memorial, itis possible that their names are engraved on other memorials in the area but in some cases they may not be remembered locally at all, either way I shall dedicate
this roll of honour to all of those from Cannock and its surrounding areas who lost their lives fighting for our freedom in WW1
Pam Turner (BFHG Member)
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
