Welcome Back!

We have an exciting issue for you this month as we delve into the colourful world of fashion and cinema—and what fusions they are capable of. The first time I visited Cannes I knew there was something special in the air, something which saturated every café, casino and vintage sports car. Every step on the boardwalk had a story to tell whether it was of Tony Curtis, Elizabeth Taylor or Francis Ford Coppola. 2014 marks the 67th Cannes Films Festival and the invariable Who’s Who of the art and business world will be making an appearance. But this year Geneva will also have representation in the form of Adil Bouarbi—artistic director of Adil Bouarbi Couture and the newly established Mod’Art Agency which focuses on event production combining music, dance and fashion. Commissioned to shoot his Charlie Chaplin-inspired ensembles—as well as his iconic art-couture collections—I discovered a whole new side to Geneva as we stunned businessmen on their lunch breaks, picnickers enjoying the afternoon sun and street cleaners who found it odd to find a full photo and video production crew blocking their way at 6am outside the Hotel de Ville. Adil is a master at bringing fantasies to life through his designs; this only helped to inspire my story telling photographic tendencies even further. So in this, the RED CARPET ISSUE, we aim to bring you a truly cinematic take on fashion, worthy of the starlets who will be making their own appearances on the Cannes red carpet in a few days (as will some of these dresses!) Enjoy the story.

ADIL BOUARBI — Story Telling Designer

A fashion creative’s heart in the body of a dancer makes for one rare fusion of talent. And while Geneva is not the first place one would expect to find such an eclectic mix, Adil Bouarbi has made it his home these past few years developing his “Art-Couture” designer boutique. Here, art and clothing come together for an emotional reckoning as his collections have made appearances across Geneva—worn by the Who’s Who of the social scene—and are a favourite of Miss Suisse Romande herself.

Adil’s passions fuel the ideas behind his trademark designs, as inspiration is sourced from the likes of a subtle solo of a violin or an eye-opening trip. He favours those fabrics with a noble and rich history such as silk, creating simple and elegant pieces as a second skin to their wearer.

His two newest collections have been inspired by Tchaikovsky and famed silent actor Charlie Chaplin. Perhaps then it is only fitting that French actress and comedian Aurélie Montea Thomas has become the latest to don Adil’s figure-hugging designs. Sporting them on the Cannes Red Carpet at the premiers and the numerous after-parties to follow, art-couture will have its first worldwide debut in front of the world’s press, designers and other influential personalities. When the collection returns home, a bit of Cannes inspiration will have come back with it!
