Page 2: Canned food

Canned food was invented by a guy named Nicolas Appert at the end of the 1700s. Napoleon's army was responsible for the development of the canning method of food preservation. The main point of canned food was to preserve food from getting rotten. Canned food works with every kind of food starting from fruits to meat.

Introduction

Page 3: Canned food

Problem

For a long time people, especially soldiers, wanted food that they could save for when they go to war and food that lasted for along time without getting rotten. They suffered from severe lead poisoning after three years of eating jarred food.

Page 4: Canned food

The creator Nicholas Appert is also known as the “the father of canning” became

known for his inventions, Had a lot of jobs such as an obscure candy-maker, brewer, baker, hotelkeeper and he had many other jobs. Nicholas Appert was born on November 17, 1749 and he died on June 1, 1841. He was born near Paris, France. Nicolas François Appert, was a son of an inn-keeper whose roots were firmly planted in farming.

Story of the invention Canned food was created thanks to Nicholas Appert. Nicholas Appert

complaining about army food has been military traditions ever since there have been armies. The French government recognized the problem by offering a cash prize for a means of supplying high-quality food to the troops. In 1811,Nicolas Appert won it by heating food in glass jars and sealing the tops wit cork. Later, he replaced the jars with cans, somewhat similar to those used today.

Explain how the invention works We are able to can many things , for example fruits , tomatoes , salsa ,

nuts, vegetables and many others. Today I will be saying how we can pineapples. Procedure: Wash pineapple. Peel and remove eyes and tough fiber. Slice or cube. Pineapple may be packed in water, apple juice, white grape juice or medium syrup. In a large saucepan, add pineapple to syrup, water or juice, and simmer 10 minutes. Fill jars with hot pieces and cooking liquid, leaving ½ inch headspace. Adjust lid and wait at most 30 mins, after those 30 mins you can then move and do whatever you want.

Page 7: Canned food

Explain how invention solves the problem The invention helped solve the problem because they were no longer

suffering from severe lead poisoning and food no longer got rotten in a fast amount of time.

Page 8: Canned food

What did humans do about the problem before this invention

They tried solving the problem of food getting rotten by inventing jarred food, but that made another problem which was that they got severe lead poising from it.

Page 9: Canned food

How did this invention improve human life This improved human’s life , because humans could now store food , for

more than a month with out it rotting out, and it let them be able to transport food from one place to another.

Page 10: Canned food

Improvements to the Invention through time. At first a guy thought of the idea of preserving food in bottles, like wine.

Next they developed a method of sealing food inside glass jars. After that Peter Durand, took the process one step farther and developed a method of sealing food into unbreakable tin containers. They created a few others but finally they invented the containers we use today.

Page 11: Canned food

How has the invention create new problems for usSome examples of problems from the invention 1. people became more lazy and are always cooking with canned food “which

is not healthy”

2. The canning process destroys some of the food's nutritional content

3. if you look at the list of ingredients on most cans you will find that artificial preservatives etc.

All the examples above is some of the problems that could affect our health.

Page 12: Canned food

History of canned food The process of canning was invented in the late 18th century in France, The emperor about

keeping his armies well-fed, announced a cash award of 12,000 Francs to whoever could develop a method of preserving food. Nicholas Appert was the one who to discover that you can preserve food into bottles.

An Englishman, Peter Durand, took the process one step farther and developed a method of sealing food into unbreakable tin containers.

The first commercial canning factory was established in England by Bryan Dorkin and John Hall in 1813.

Thomas Kensett, established the first U.S. canning facility for oysters, meats, fruits and vegetables in New York.

Large-scale wars in the nineteenth century, such as the Crimean War, American Civil War, and Franco-Prussian War introduced increasing numbers of working-class men to tinned food.

This webpage gives a brief summary of the history of canned food and others. In the brief history of the canned food it says that a guy invented it named Nicholas Appert. So far this website is reliable, but I have never used it before. When I was reading it , it seemed easy to read.

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tin_can>. The tin can was patented in 1809 by the English inventor Nicholas Appert. He did not produce any food cans himself, but

sold his patent to two other Englishmen, Bryan Donkin and John Hall, who set up a commercial canning factory, and by 1813 were producing their first canned goods for the British Army. Early cans were sealed with lead soldering, which led to lead poisoning. Famously, in the 1845 Arctic expedition of Sir John Franklin, crew members suffered from severe lead poisoning after three years of eating canned food. In 1901, the American Can Company was founded which, at the time, produced 90% of United States tin cans.
