Morinville celebrated International Day of OlderPersons on Oct. 1 by giving out swag bags filled withinformation and trade show-type promotional itemsfrom local businesses. Persons aged 55 and overcould pre-register for a bag.

“It’s to promote understanding of ageism,”explained Morinville Family and Community Sup-port Services (FCSS) senior programmer Mary Ben-son. “It’s the trade show that didn’t go. It’s here forcurbside pick up.”

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, no tradeshow, program or presentations were held for Inter-national Day of Older Persons; however, the Albertagovernment Council on Aging shared resources withmunicipalities and organizations working to addressageism.

“It’s the whole big picture of the group aged 55and over,” Benson said. “They are employers, employees, volunteers, neighbors.”

The bags were purchased from the MorinvilleAdult Day Program and filled with information, coupons, and items donated by local businesses.FCSS staff filled 80 bags, and all were given out.

“We’re overwhelmed with the response,” saidBenson.

Ageism is stereotyping or discrimination againstindividuals or groups on the basis of their age.

CLYDE AUCTIONEERING

The vandals who damaged gravestones inGibbons during September were caught.Between Sept. 8 and 9 damage was done at theAnglican Church Cemetery in Gibbons andjust prior to Sept. 27 the Catholic Sacred Heartcemetery was vandalized.

Morinville RCMP Cpl. Sheldon Robbadvised in a Sept. 30 update that police wereable through investigation to determine thesuspects responsible for the vandalism to theAnglican cemetery.

“Due to the age of the suspects however, they cannot be charged nor their names bereleased,” advised Robb. “Morinville RCMPwould like to thank members of the generalpublic in solving this senseless crime.”

When contacted later Morinville RCMPCpl. Jeff Sutherland said police believe the twoincidences of vandalism are related.

“We’ve identified the people, but they’reyouths,” said Sutherland. “No charges arepending. RCMP are working with the familiesand community to resolve this.”

Gibbons CAO Farrell O’Malley said thetown is working with the churches to installlights and cameras to help prevent future inci-dents of crimes in the cemeteries. He is notaware of increased vandalism in other areas.

“We haven’t heard of too much else,” hesaid. “We hope that, now they are caught, thevandalism will halt.”

Gravestone vandals caught, but no charges laid

On Sunday,September 27th wecame to mass atSacred HeartCatholic Churchand found that 11of the graves hadbeen desecrated. 7had been toppled,2 had been broken, including mybrother's, MarkRondeau, and 2had piecesremoved andstolen. Flowerswere ripped apartand scattered anddecorations werestrewn about. Asthe family andfriends of our deceased, our hearts are broken. I can't help but feel angry andviolated. One of these graves is the infant son of a friend of ours. Some arehusbands, some friends. My brother, Mark, was 17 when he died in a car accidentin 2010. He was kind and accepting and regularly stood up for his peers who werebullied and picked on. These are people we love(d). Our church volunteers havemade temporary repairs. For some damage, the families, like my own will need tocontact the gravestone manufacturers. For some of the graves, where there is noliving or local family, the church community will need to tend to the repairs needed. If you have any helpful information, please contact the local RCMP. If you haveever caused damage in a cemetery, or if this damage was caused by you, pleasereflect on your actions. Reflect on loss. What if this was the grave of your bestfriend, your mother, father, child or brother. --Michelle Conley

Mayor Barry Turner called it a hundred years in themaking, but the town of Morinville has finallyreached the milestone of 10,000 population.

He used several examples, including Beaumont tothe south of Edmonton as towns which hit the 10,000tipping point and then were able to attract rapidgrowth.

However, the actual report on the census castsdoubt on the validity of its use in future planning.“The impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic affectedthe information collected during the project. CensusDay (the specific day selected to serve as a snapshotview of our population count and demographic status)was April 1, 2020. This date landed firmly in the peri-od where many industries were reducing their workforces. As a result, the answers provided to some ofthe demographic questions, particularly those sur-rounding employment status, are not a true or usefulrepresentation of the typical employment picture forMorinville residents.”

The census also shows an increase in the number ofresidences (including all types from apartments tosingle family detached homes) increased by an aver-age of about 61 per year. “The total number of resi-dential dwellings in 2020 is 3,894 with 3,789 occu-pied, 96 vacant, and 9 under construction. This is anincrease of 249 dwellings since the 2016 Census.”

While the Mayor referred to the town of Beau-mont’s rapid growth after the 10,000 threshold whichallowed it to become a city, Morinville has not start-ed the paperwork to gain city status. It has not evenpassed a resolution to evaluate the financial impact ofgoing to city status. Turner said that will be an issueaddressed by a future council.

The next General Municipal Election is in Octoberof 2021 — with the current council still have over onequarter of its four year term remaining.
