President Gordon Lion consultations

& pitches

Over the past eight days, I participated in a series of five conference calls with Chapter

leadership to discuss recent developments relat-ed to the negotiations framework that the Board has been considering over the past 14 months. I look forward to the upcoming Chapter Council meeting and hearing the response of the mem-bership to this important proposal. I very much appreciate the engagement of Chapter leaders,

presidents, contract chairs and Chapter Council representatives, as we have worked through this proposal.

On May 7, Kit and I met with the Deputy Minister and discussed an array of issues. As always, compensation is at the forefront of every dis-cussion with government. The evidence is in the hands of the Minister of Finance along with the report of the Exempt Staff Compensation Working Group and we eagerly await government’s decision. We also talked about BCPVPA leadership in professional learning succession planning and student leadership. We made a strong pitch for a re-newal of government support for BC Student Voice and could point to a number of productive engagements by the Ministries of Health and Education with Student Voice on issues such as student mental health, distracted driving, transition to post-secondary, and indicators of student mental health and well-being. We left the meeting opti-mistic of restoring the government-BCPVPA partnership on student leadership. Bill 11 and its provisions requiring ongoing professional learning for all BC certificate holders was also discussed. We expect that our Association will soon be engaged with the Ministry, Teacher Regulation Branch, Superintendents’ Association, and BCTF on this important issue.

Last week Chapter Presidents received an email from me with a link to survey to solicit feedback about the impact of district budget delibera-tions on members. This information will be collated and shared with Chapters to help them compare and contrast their situation with oth-ers across the province. The Association will also use this information in its ongoing discussion with government regarding funding to sup-port our members. My thanks to the 26 Chapter Presidents who have already completed the survey. I look forward to hearing from the other districts soon.

I would like to congratulate the conference chairs of the CAP/Connect-ing Leaders, Bruce Frith (Saanich) and Anne Smith (Prince George), and every member of the organizing committee, both members and

The program not only features impressive internationally renowned speakers, but also more than two dozen of our members who will share stories about their successes in building school culture and student achievement. I look forward to meeting many of you there … and for those of you who are unable to attend, I hope you look at page 4 of this eNews, where you will find information about the October 2015 Connecting Leaders: Framing the Future conference in Rich-mond. Survey Update

Radicalization in BC Secondary Schools: The Principals’ PerspectiveThank you! Thank you! I appreciate the valuable input provided by those principals and vice-principals who found time to help pilot test the preliminary survey for my research study. Your suggestions and comments were critical in tightening up the approach and questions that will be used in the final survey. Your invitation to participate in this survey will soon be sent. It should only take about 20 minutes to complete, but the importance of your contribution to this study cannot be over-emphasized. I sincerely hope many of you will dedicate a few minutes of your time to add to this critical body of knowledge. Enjoy the CAP annual conference in Whistler.
