Technology Innovation and Intellectual Property Development Manager in Medical Technologies

School of Mechanical Engineering Do you have a proven track record of translating research in medical technologies towards clinical application? Are you an experienced project manager with a background in medical technologies? Can you provide expert advice to support and develop the intellectual property (IP) portfolio of medical technologies innovation, driving forward the University’s ambitious plans for growth in this area? The University of Leeds has significant capabilities that support the development of new medical technologies and these are united under a single gateway - Medical Technologies at the University of Leeds. Medical Technologies encompasses a portfolio of research and innovation programmes and projects: the Medical Technologies Innovation and Knowledge Centre, Regener8, Translate, MeDe Innovation (EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Medical Devices); WELMEC (Wellcome Trust Centre of Excellence in Medical Engineering), hosted by the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering at Leeds. The programmes and their underpinning research have a grown and sustained a critical mass of medical technologies research and innovation excellence with current funding totalling £52m for the next five years. With a focus on IP, you will shape the strategic research direction of Medical Technologies, to maximise research impact and external income.

What does the role entail? As Technology Innovation and Intellectual Property Development Manager (Medical Technologies), your main duties will include:

Identifying and supporting academic project leaders to maximise promising medical technology opportunities, through a defined stage gate framework, which includes opportunity evaluation, proof of technical concept and proof of commercial feasibility;

Managing and progressing projects which show sufficient commercial promise to development with commercial, clinical and other partners. This will include identifying resource requirements, seeking appropriate routes to funding from a range of sources and identifying, developing and maintaining strategic relationships and networks with academic, industrial, clinical and other partners to develop proposals to secure this funding;

Coordinating the Medical Technologies IP portfolio, including the identification, assessment and protection of IP. This will include reviewing opportunities at an early stage, assessing novelty, carrying out brief freedom to operate and patent landscaping analyses (using tools such as PatSnap) and market assessment;

Providing a key interface with the University’s Commercialisation Services;

Managing contracts for the medical technologies innovation portfolio, including assisting with putting appropriate contracts in place using standard templates and providing information to the University’s central contracts team to inform drafting of bespoke contracts.

What will you bring to the role? As Technology Innovation and Intellectual Property Development Manager you will have:

A PhD and experience in an area relevant to medical technologies;

Experience of working with academic researchers from multiple disciplines, in particular previous experience and understanding of issues relating to the translation of research and experience of bringing different stakeholders together to secure resources and progress technology opportunities;

Experience of IP identification, assessment and protection;

Proven project management skills and the ability to work under pressure and to appropriately prioritise and balance workloads;

Familiarity with funding streams for innovation, with experience of supporting bids for external funding;

Excellent interpersonal, communication and team working skills, with the ability to interface between academic staff and diverse stakeholders.

You may also have:

An IP management qualification;

Experience of working for the university sector or for a research funding body or commercial organisation, with experience and knowledge of university research and/or innovation best practice;

Experience of technology licensing or spin-out.
