The numbers of cancer-afflicted patients in Malaysia have

increased year by year. From 2008 until 2012, new cases climbed

from 28,000 to 32,000. For year 2007, National Cancer Registry

reported that the estimated account revealed that there were

85.1 male cancer patients for every 100,000 males; the figure

stood at 94.4 female cancer patients for every 100,000 females.

Family members of cancer patients to try to sympathise with the intentions of the patient - in circumstances that he or she would not experience harm; to allow him or her to be at their most natural, most at-ease state to face their inevitable conclusion; and at the same time to allow him or her to absorb balance nutrients.

Focusing on cancer research and analysing many different types of cancer, America’s John Hopkins

University found out statistically that 70% of cancer cases arise from “random permutations” when cells grow and differentiate; while the other 30% is due to genetic inheritance or environmental causes.

In 2007, World Cancer Research Foundation (WCRF) and American Cancer Research Institute jointly presented a research paper called “Food, Nutrient,

Physical Activity and Cancer Prevention”. The paper revealed the state of current medicine and technology then - that cancer knowledge was still limited in the general population. Even though many knew that cancer is caused by changes or mutations to the DNA within cells, they did not know why it happen. Questions such as why some organs are more vulnerable or prone to this process, and why some people are more likely to have this occur to them, are still unknown/unexplained.

Once the diagnosis of cancer is reached, the patient and family

members, in the midst of shocked confusion, will inevitably ask

these questions: Which stage is this cancer at? Can it be cured?

Is surgery necessary?

Ask your doctors or healthcare professionals for more

information and access to printed materials related to

your sickness. Healthcare facilities usually have such

information – ready-at- hand.

Take notes when doctor(s) explain, or

engage your family, friends and caregivers

to help you remember the main points.

This is a good practice as you can then

refer or reflect upon the points shared by

the doctor(s) after the consultation.

Do notify your doctor if you have the intention of seeking

a second opinion. Doctors understand the importance of

such an action and will not be against such notion. In most

instances, doctors lend help to recommend other suitable

doctors instead. Doctors respect patients’ wishes and

work together towards giving patients the best possible

care and a peace of mind.
