Welcome to Canalway Cavalcade in the beautiful setting of Browning’s Pool here at Little Venice. The May Day Bank Holiday weekend is one time in the year the Pool is packed with boats - and what a fantastic sight it is.

Volunteers from The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) have been organising this free entry event for over 30 years and I’m sure you’ll want to join me in saying a very big thank you to them all. If you would like to support their efforts and show your thanks, please do make a donation to the Association in one of the IWA ‘buckets’ around the site.

IWA is the leading membership charity dedicated to restoring, protecting and improving Britain’s network of canal and river waterways. We work hard to promote and support the waterways, encouraging as many people as possible to get involved in lots of different ways. For example, our volunteer activity groups are a great way to make new friends and learn new skills, while giving something valuable back to our cities and countryside.

The inland waterways are part of our national heritage. About 200 years ago they were the motorways of their day, providing the essential transport network that made the Industrial Revolution possible. In recent years they have found many new uses that their builders would never have imagined. Where better to relax, enjoy wildlife, take exercise and have fun in an environment far removed from the stresses and strains of the modern world, just as you are doing today?

I hope you have a great day here at Cavalcade. Please find time to visit IWA’s stands in Warwick Crescent and in the marquee on the Paddington Towpath, talk to our enthusiastic team and learn more about the inland waterways and how IWA works to make them better. If you love Cavalcade and the waterways, please consider joining us. The more members we have, the more we can achieve for the waterways.

Les Etheridge National Chairman The Inland Waterways Association

Rivers have been used for transport since time immemorial. When the Industrial Revolution changed the British economy from the 1750s onwards, the rivers were not best placed to transport coal and raw materials to the new factories and move the products to where they were needed. Artificial rivers, or canals, were therefore built to link with the rivers to form a network of waterways on which boats were able to carry heavy loads far more efficiently than was possible over land. A horse can pull at least 30 tons on water compared with maybe 3 tons on a well surfaced road.

Locks were built to take canals up and down hills, tunnels were bored through more difficult terrain and aqueducts were built across rivers. Many of the early long distance canals were built narrow to save construction costs with locks 70ft. long and 7ft. wide to take the narrow boat, which hasbecome the traditional icon of the English canals.

Contrary to popular belief, when the steam locomotive became a practical proposition from the 1820s and was adopted by the railways, the canals were not superseded. In fact long-distance commercial carrying by narrow boat continued on the Grand Union Canal to west London until 1970. There was, however, a steady decline in canal carrying throughout the 20th Century, despite the gradual adoption of the diesel engine to power the boats.

The railways did cause the closure of many rural canals which could never be viable concerns, just as railway branch lines could not compete with road transport.

It was already obvious that there was a limited future for canal carrying as there was simply not enough traffic to justify the cost of maintaining the network, which had never been modernised and was still much as it had been when first built in the 18th Century. There was a very real danger that the canals would disappear. The fact that they didn’t was largely due to the publication in 1944 of the book “Narrow Boat” an account by LTC Rolt of an extensive cruise in his converted canal boat in 1939-40. This was read by Robert Aickman who, like most people at the time, knew nothing about canals. He met Rolt who took him for a cruise and he immediately fell in love with the canals. A literary agent based in London, Aickman had some influential contacts. In 1946 they formed The Inland Waterways Association to promote the use of canals and fight any closure proposals. At this time leisureboating was in its infancy and officialdom could not envisage how the network could be maintained for such a minority pursuit. The canals were nationalised in 1948 and, as

7

time progressed, attitudes gradually changed, largely due to pressure from and direct action by IWA which grew into aformidable and respected campaigning organisation. Many canals were saved from closure and, not only that, but when the abandonment of the southern Stratford Canal in Warwickshire was successfully contested, IWA undertook its restoration and proved that a moribund canal could be restored by volunteers. The reopening by

the Queen Mother in 1964 was a landmark that led the way for several hundred miles of waterway being brought back into use.The work of restoring canals continues apace with work in progress all over the country led by local groups, and assisted by volunteers from IWA’s highly experienced Waterway Recovery Group.

In 2012, the ownership of the canal network was transferred from the nationalised BritishWaterways to a charitable trust, Canal & River Trust who, although they still receive government support, can now also draw on other sources of funding, as well as volunteer labour. The canals are enjoyed by millions every year – walkers, cyclists, anglers, naturalists, industrial archaeologists and,of course, boaters! They are a priceless heritage.

An annual tradition at Canalway Cavalcade is the Blessing of the Waters of Little Veniceand the Blessing of the Boats conducted by Father Gary Bradley, Vicar of Little Venice. On Sunday he and members of his congregation will walk up from St Saviour’s Church after the morning service to the Horse Bridge. At about 12:45 Father Bradley will say prayers from the bridge, blessing the waters of Little Venice. We will all say the Lord’s Prayer as we stand around the pool and he will then move on to ‘Lady Mildmay’. Boaters’ will await his visit as he is taken along the moorings towards Paddington basin, round the pool moorings and along the visitor moorings in Delamere Terrace. As he passes the boats he will bless them and their crews, sprinkling holy water on them.

My first encounter with Blessing of the Waters was by the sea where in a number of places around the coast and on islands there is an annual ceremony to bless the waters and the fishing boats. At St Peter’s Church in Folkestone, Kent this takes place in June. It is called ‘Blessing of the Fisheries’ and described as follows: “Blessing of the Fisheries has taken place in the parish since 1896, when usually a Bishop leads this ceremony on the Stade, praying for our fishing community, safety of their boats, for their nets and a good harvest of the seas, as well as for all who go down to the sea in ships, plying their trades in great waters”.

Closer to home, on Sunday 11th January this year, the Blessing of the River Thamestook place on London Bridge, presided over

by the Bishop of Southwark, the Rt. RevdChristopher Chessun. The parishes of Southwark Cathedral (on the south bank) and St Magnus the Martyr (on the north bank) meet annually in the middle of London Bridge at the point marking their parish boundaries on the first Sunday after 6th January (Epiphany).

The form the service takes is always the same: processions from Southwark Cathedral and the Church of St Magnus the Martyr, Lower Thames Street, meet in themiddle of London Bridge. There is a short service which concludes with the throwing into the river of a simple cross made of wood representing the blessing of Christ, both for the river and also those who use it and care for it.

This ancient service was revived in 2009, the 800th anniversary of the opening of the firststone London Bridge in 1209. Next year’s Blessing of the River Thames will take place on Sunday 10th January 2016 at 12:30.

Children’s EntertainmentThere are lots of children’s activities spread around the site and you can pick up more information and a map of their locations from any of the Information Points on thePaddington and South towpaths and in Rembrandt Gardens; the WaterspaceOffice on the North Towpath; IWA’s marquee on Warwick Crescent; the Wild over Waterways (WoW) tent overlooking the amphitheatre; The Electric Barge classroom boat; Pirate Prince; and Stort Challenger. There will be a Paddington Bear trail for younger children and a canal related trail for the older children. You can start anywhere and here are some of the things you can do: The WoW tent overlooking the Amphitheatre is a good place to find out about all that is going on. You can start the two trails there and have some fun making duck headdresses, trying out brass rubbing, colouring and finding out more about canals and about some of the things that are used on or carried by Narrowboats.

We will also be creating a mural over the weekend on the theme ‘Canals in Bloom’ so you can participate in that. Down in the Amphitheatre there will be some giant games and other activities where you can have fun and let off steam!

On the Paddington Towpath you will find various children’s rides under the flyover andclose by you can come on board the classroom boat, The Electric Barge. There will be various activities including making bunting to decorate the boat, badge-making (£1),creating jewellery from recycled materials (£1 per item) and face painting (£4 per child). This will be open between 15:00 – 17:45 on Saturday and 11:00 – 17:30 on Sunday and Monday. There will also be two or three Creepy Crawlies shows during the day (£1 per ticket).

The Canal Museum stand will have some of the answers to the trail and you can also try

painting roses and castles and making lace plates. Further down the PaddingtonTowpath, near Bishop’s Bridge, you can try kayaking and learn about water safety and how to help with a rescue on the canal. This is provided by the team from the Pirate Castle in Camden. Life jackets and full instruction will be provided. You can also go on board their boat Pirate Prince and make things like pirate hats and boats and learn more about what happens at the Pirate Castle.

On the other side of the canal, on the Stone Wharf, Graham Nunn and his team will have activities on and beside their boat, Stort Challenger, including balloon modelling, plate spinning, juggling and some magic tricks. In Rembrandt Gardens there’ll be two Punch and Judy performances each day, also two from Mr Mylo, a children’s mime artist. You can have a go in Bubbles of Fun, ‘walking on water’ and the Boating Pool. On Sunday afternoon at 15:00 bears and their humans are invited to the Teddy Bears’ Picnic with Graham Nunn and his team. There are prizes for the furthest travelled bear and for the best colouring.

In addition to the festival activities above, the Puppet Theatre Barge, May Brent, is atLittle Venice moored on the North towpath. They will perform their Puppet Show ‘BrerRabbit and the Tar Baby’ at 11:00 and 15:00 on Saturday and Monday and at noonand 15:00 on Sunday. Tickets are £8.50 for children, £10 for seniors and £12 for adults.Advance booking is recommended – Tel: 020 7249 6876 or websitewww.puppetbarge.com/HowToBook

Stay Safe Near the Water

12

Please:• Take care walking along the towpaths,

there are more boats here than usual and there are, unavoidably, some trip hazards – watch your step!

• Keep children under control – no running!

• Do not lean out over the water.

• Do not lean against the boats – they can move unexpectedly.

• Never jump across or dive into the canal, you can never be sure of what’s below the surface.

• Dogs are welcome but must be on leads at all times (and poop-scooped after!)

• Make use of the litter disposal facilities.

• The First Aid Post is on Paddington Central, marked on the Site Plan:

in the centre of this souvenir programme.

• Please listen out for important Public Address announcements.

Water may look safe, but it can be dangerous. Learn to spot the dangers and keep away. You may swim well in a warm indoor pool, but that does not mean that you will be able to swim in cold water.

The dangers of water include:• It is very cold • There may be hidden currents • It can be difficult to get out (steep slimy

banks)• It can be deep • It is difficult to estimate depth• There may be hidden rubbish, e.g.

shopping trolleys, broken glass • There are no lifeguards • It may be polluted and can make you ill • Always supervise children near water

If you have any concerns please go to the nearest Information Point (there are three: on the Paddington Towpath, on the South Towpath and in Rembrandt Gardens) marked with an on the Site Plan in this programme.

Historic Narrowboats

RogerRoger from Rickmansworth Waterways Trust, built in 1936, is one of the last wooden narrowboats in circulation. Built by Bushell Brothers at Tring, the boat has a Lister JP 2 engine. It is open to the public all year round as part of the Trust’s work on Heritage Education. See www.rwt.org.uk/historic-working-boat/the-roger/

Bantam IV Tug The tug Bantam IV was built 1949-50 by EC Jones, at Brentford. It spent much of its life on gravel pits in southern England and later it was bought by Chris Gibson and used as a working tug on the Kennet and Avon Canal.

91 Bantams were built between 1949 and 1969. Many of this class of tug were used for canal maintenance work. This is believed to be the oldest Bantam which is still in existence. It still retains its original Lister JP2 diesel engine. The engine has no electric start but has to be started by hand, a process that requires significant physical strength and stamina!

The tug Bantam IV was donated to the London Canal Museum in 1994 by Chris Gibson after his contracting business on the Kennet and Avon Canal ceased. It has been restored and maintained largely by the museum’s volunteers. In 2004 the hull was plated to protect and strengthen it. It remains in working order.

As a “Pusher” tug, it couples to a barge in front, and is tightly attached to it. This is more energy efficient than a towing one.

Normally the tug is moored in Battlebridge Basin, King’s Cross, behind the London Canal Museum, where it can be seen by museum visitors. The tug occasionally leaves the museum, notably to attend Cavalcade and the Angel Canal Festival in September.

Pacific Pacific was built in 1934 by WJ Yarwood and Sons Ltd. as a tug for Stewart & Loyds, Coombswood, Birmingham. She was employed as a tug pulling 70ft. joey boats from the coal fields to the factory. She then went into the hands of British Waterways to work again as a general tug, before being taken on by Alfred Matty who was the last carrying contractor in Birmingham. Matty would not sell her but when he died she was obtained by Roger Farrington who restored the hull. John Pattle then bought her from Roger and over a period of seven years restored her including full overhaul of the engine, re-riveting to top superstructure and fitting it out inside.
