CSGA 2012 AGM – Deerfoot Inn & Casino, Calgary – July 11th - 13th

CSGA 2013 AGM – Halifax – hotel & dates to be confirmed

Jim Baillie, NS is elected 1st vice President

Vacancy to be elected 2nd vice President

Current Issues:

GM Flax Streamlining Structure & Governance

Budget Succession Planning


Budget• Running a deficit budget in 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11• Acreages are essentially flat• Membership numbers continue to drop• Expenses increase even if only for inflation• Return on surplus fund investments is low• Pension plan service costs are increasing (low investment returns)


The “White Paper”

21 recommendations:

1. conduct as many as possible Committee and Executive Committee meetings by conference call

2. Maintain Board size but deal with governance & policy – don’t repeat the work done by Committees



3. Maintain end-user advocacy as a priority

4. Have more control over Annual Meeting organization & provide more time for discussion of current issues

5. Seek government funding when applicable or available



6. Put available surplus funds toward education, publicity and R&D

7. Co-operate with other organizations and companies in advocacy work (political & end-user)

8. Invite Branch Directors & funds to E&P Committee & activities



9. Eliminate the past President’s position on the Board

10. Discontinue the CSGA wall calendar

11. Advertise on the CSGA website as a revenue generator

12. Initiate a collector’s fee for Branch fees



13. Recommend an acreage fee increase to take effect in 2011


Succession Planning is Becoming a Must – Not a LuxuryWithin five years Canada’s seed industry is likely to see:Dale Adolphe & Randy Preater retire at CSGAMike Scheffel & Louise Duke retire at CFIABill Leask retire at CSTAJim McCullagh and Ken Stone retire at CSI
