‘The Wretched’ — Wonderfully RedoneA blockbuster novel for over 150 years comes vividly to life in award-winning

screenwriter Andrew Davies’ multi-layered retelling of Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. This enthralling television event (not a musical) airs in six episodes on MASTERPIECE, Sundays at 8 pm/9 Mtn, April 14 – May 19.

Dominic West (The Affair, The Wire) stars as Jean Valjean, the most famous fugitive in literature, with David Oyelowo (Selma, Small Island) as his relentless pursuer, Javert. Lily Collins (Rules Don’t Apply; Love, Rosie) appears as the tragic seamstress, Fantine; Ellie Bamber (Nocturnal Animals) plays her adolescent daughter, Cosette; Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and Adeel Akhtar (Unforgotten) are Cosette’s cruel overseers, the Thénardiers; and Josh O’Connor (The Durrells in Corfu) is the student and reluctant revolutionary Marius, who falls in love with Cosette at first sight.

Joining the extensive cast are David Bradley (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter) as Monsieur Gillenormand and Sir Derek Jacobi (Gladiator, Last Tango in Halifax) as the kindly Bishop of Digne.

The first English translation of Les Misérables in 1862 left the French title (meaning “the wretched” or “the dispossessed”) in place. And so it has been known in English ever since, through countless printed editions, plays, musicals, and movies. This latest version promises to be one of the best yet.

From the Board…PSSST… Have you heard that KSPS has started 2019 with a splash of EXCELLENCE?! KSPS won the

NETA (National Educational Telecommunications Association) Award in the Instructional Media in the Teacher Resource category. The awards were presented at a red-carpet gala event in January in Salt Lake City. The award is in recognition of NETA member stations’ achievements in community engagement, promotion, instructional media and content production.

KSPS’s efforts were lead by Bukola Breczinski, KSPS Education Director, and her two Gonzaga University interns, Rosemary Colon and Ali Asiri. Bukola and team segmented KSPS documentaries and created video-supported lesson plans. Examples of the history lessons covered topics like Native American history and Japanese American incarceration during WWII. The ready-to-go lesson plans are being used by teachers nationwide. The award-winning educational resources are now available FREE to educators — and to everyone — at https://www.ksps.org/education .

The lesson plans are part of KSPS’ Lifelong Learning goal by providing on-air, online and multimedia programs that entertain, engage and educate to enrich all the communities we serve. Check it out! What do you want to learn?

Doing What Comes Naturally…There are several channels that bring you wonders of

our natural world these days; but there is still just one source that stands head-and-shoulders above the rest in terms of quality, content and the overwhelming legacy of nature programming. That source — of course — is Public Television. PBS has been doing it so long, so well, that presenting nature has become…well…second-nature.

That’s no exception this year, as winter begins to finally recede and we look forward to spring bursting forth with a flurry of flowered, furred and feathered activity. Nature has a real-time experience planned for us that captures the change of seasons in all of its wild splendor — from iconic locations across America. American Spring LIVE will be a three-night event, airing Monday, April 29, Tuesday, April 30 and Wednesday, May 1 at 8 pm each evening.

“Nature throws a party every year, and it’s called spring. It is the most active time in the natural world for plant and animals, from birth and rebirth to migrations to pollination,” said Nature executive producer Fred Kaufman. “In addition to witnessing incredible wonders, the goal of Nature: American Spring LIVE is to inspire people to go outside and get involved with science. Everyone can play a part in our natural world.”

Each episode is built around a central theme that reveals how the new season triggers extraordinary biological change. Besides the “Series Central” venue of Yosemite National Park, additional tentative live locations include the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, Florida’s Everglades, San Francisco, a sheep farm in Maine and Texas’ Frio Bat Cave and Gulf Coast. Like ZZ Top, nature and springtime are…Nationwide.

Of Mountaintops, Translators and KSPS…While a large number of our members receive KSPS via cable, satellite, wireless or Internet-based systems, there is an

increasing number of viewers who get free, over-the-air broadcast of KSPS programming via our main transmitter or one of several, outlying community translators.

In recent years, the KSPS engineering staff has been on an ambitious, aggressive updating schedule to make the equipment at these mountaintop sites more robust and dependable than ever; and the effort has been paying off.

Mountains, adverse weather and tough access being what they are, though, occasionally the unthinkable happens and a KSPS site goes off the air during the harshest winter conditions. We have a resourceful engineering team, however, which defies the odds by gaining access anyway and fixing the problem. Our thanks go out to them, for braving these conditions to bring us our favorite shows.

‘The Wretched’ — Wonderfully RedoneA blockbuster novel for over 150 years comes vividly to life in award-winning

screenwriter Andrew Davies’ multi-layered retelling of Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. This enthralling television event (not a musical) airs in six episodes on MASTERPIECE, Sundays at 8 pm/9 Mtn, April 14 – May 19.

Dominic West (The Affair, The Wire) stars as Jean Valjean, the most famous fugitive in literature, with David Oyelowo (Selma, Small Island) as his relentless pursuer, Javert. Lily Collins (Rules Don’t Apply; Love, Rosie) appears as the tragic seamstress, Fantine; Ellie Bamber (Nocturnal Animals) plays her adolescent daughter, Cosette; Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and Adeel Akhtar (Unforgotten) are Cosette’s cruel overseers, the Thénardiers; and Josh O’Connor (The Durrells in Corfu) is the student and reluctant revolutionary Marius, who falls in love with Cosette at first sight.

Joining the extensive cast are David Bradley (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter) as Monsieur Gillenormand and Sir Derek Jacobi (Gladiator, Last Tango in Halifax) as the kindly Bishop of Digne.

The first English translation of Les Misérables in 1862 left the French title (meaning “the wretched” or “the dispossessed”) in place. And so it has been known in English ever since, through countless printed editions, plays, musicals, and movies. This latest version promises to be one of the best yet.
