CANADA is the second largest country in the world ( after Russia). There are 10 provinces

and 3 territories.

Canada is part of the Commonwealth: an organisation of 53 countries from the former British empire.This is its flag

Queen Elisabeth II is the head of the Commonwealth : the members are free but united by language, culture and economical exch anges.

In Canada there isn’t a president but there’s a Prime Minister, Stephen Harper.

In Canada , they use the Canadian dollar ( coins and banknotes with Queen Elisabeth II ). But the « one cent » coin is no longer used now.

The capital city is OTTAWA in the province of Ontario. It’s in the South-East , near Montréal

and Québec (French-speaking provinces)

Our penfriends in Canada live in Castlegar. It’s next to the American border. It’s at the

confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia rivers.

Castlegar is a small city ( there are about 7,900 inhabitants). It’s in the province of British Columbia ,a Western region. There are the Rocky Mountains and the Coast Mountains.

Our penfriends ‘ school is Twin Rivers Elementary School. They are in 6th grade.

There are many wooden houses because it’s a mountainous region. It’s very cold in Winter : it

snows a lot !

There are wild animals in British Columbia, for example the badger , the beaver or the

chipmunk.

Look at these beautiful animals living in the forests: the deer , the caribou or the moose.

In the mountains or near rivers, you can see black bears or grizzly bears ! They are big and

dangerous !

These wild animals are more dangerous : the red fox, the grey wolf, the lynx and the

cougar .

In Canada they love sports , for example ice hockey. But they also enjoy fishing !

In British Columbia, you can go kayaking, horse back riding or rafting .
