Can We Tell Physical Changes from
Chemical Changes?Certain materials are included under the fair use
exemption of the U.S. Copyright Law and have been prepared according to the multimedia fair use guidelines
and are restricted from further use.
Tomorrow, during our lab investigation, you may see some or all of the following changes. You must be able to tell the physical changes
from the chemical changes.
Can you do it today?
What is a Chemical Change?
• A chemical change is a change in which a new substance with new properties is formed.
What is a Chemical Change?
• A chemical change is a change in which a new substance with new properties is formed.
What is a Physical Change?
• A physical change is a change in which a no new substance is formed, but properties may be changed.

If you see a change in color, then you’re
observing a physical change…
If color changes, then you’re observing a physical change…
If you observe a change in shape, then
you’re observing a physical change…
If shape changes, then you’re observing a physical change…
If you observe a change in size, then you’re observing a physical change…
If size changes, then you’re observing a physical change…
If you observe a change in state, then you’re observing a physical change…
If state changes, then you’re observing a physical change…
If you observe fizzing, then you will know that a chemical change is occurring…

If you observe bubbling (not due to boiling), then
you will know that a chemical change is
occurring…

If you see or smell burning, then you know that a
chemical change is occurring…
If you observe burning, then a chemical change is
occurring…
If you observe explosions because of burning, then a
chemical change is occurring…
If you observe explosions because of burning, then a

If you observe explosions because of too much air being pressed into too small a place, then a physical change is occurring…

If you observe cooling when you did not add cooling on purpose (such as a refrigerator), then a chemical change is occurring…
If you observe cooling without refrigeration, then
a chemical change is occurring…
If you observe cooling because refrigeration was
added, then a physical change is occurring…

Evidence of Physical Change
•Change of Color
•Change of Shape
•Change of Size
•Change of State
More Evidence of Physical Change
•Lowering of Temp because of refrigeration
•Raising of Temperature because of heating
Evidence of Chemical Change
•Change of Matter
•Heat w/o adding it
•Cooling w/o adding it
•Fizzing
•Bubbling
•Tomorrow, you will conduct an investigation.
•During the investigation, you will observe both physical and chemical changes.
•You must decide which are which.
•Get out the yellow lab report and the white answer sheet.
•For the rest of the period, please fill in answers, up through the hypothesis, on the white sheet.
•PLEASE DO NOT write on the yellow sheet.
