Students give back during the holiday season by Renika Dixon

During this holiday season, hundreds of children and families will benefit from the benevolence of Rust College Sorority students.

The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta hosted several events to give back to communities and children in need. Organizers say the purpose of these events was to show that the ladies of these organizations care and that the lives of others matter.

The members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. hosted Seasonal Wraps and a Can Food Drive from Nov. 24 to Dec. 19. The AKAs have asked Rust students to donate food or blankets.

“Our purpose is to give back to the local community because they do not have enough food for the holidays,” says member Anupria Davenport. “We’re giving to people in need because they do not have items for the winter to keep them warm. We’re trying to make sure everyone has a safe, warm, and blessed holiday by helping others in need.”

The members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted Secret Santa through Dec. 10. The Deltas asked students to bring a gift or give a donation.

“It’s to help a group of children who aren’t as privileged as others,” said member Hydeia Edmondson. “We are going to buy them gifts for Christmas and just help make their Christmas special. Just to show them Delta cares.”

Meanwhile, the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. hosed a coat drive though Friday, Dec. 12. The Zetas asked students to donate a coat. “The purpose of this event was for children in need of clothing, especially coats and jackets because it is winter. It is important to them and we are making our business to keep warm and are safe during the season.” says member Ariana Jackson.

Rust College’s public radio, WURC, just concluded its first ever radio-thon membership drive. Over $2,500.00 was realized during the pledge campaign held Sunday, Dec. 14 through Thursday, Dec. 18. According to Dr. Debayo Moyo, the station plans to hold the annual campaign in fall, spring, and summer. “We truly appreciate the various individuals and listeners who responded to our pledge requests,” said Moyo.

Sydne’ BreAnna Autry, Miss Gulf State, visited the station to make her pledge. It is never to late to become a member. Donations support can also be made online at www.wurc.org. Your tax-deductible donation and financial support make it possible for WURC to enhance and improve its programming objectives.
