Celebrating Success
Sean Mahendren may seem like your average guy around campus. Yet the twenty-four year old is set to rep-resent Singapore in the World Open competition on 28 June after clinching 2
nd place together with his dance
partner in the 16th Singapore National Dancesport Championships held at NTU recently.
Sean, who is currently enrolled in UCD’s Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Marketing, participated in the high-est Grade A event as a representative of Kaplan in the national competition and has truly done us proud. Hav-ing taken up dance-sport during his polytechnic days, Sean said: “I missed representing my school for compe-titions as that was how I even started. I am honored and glad that I am able to represent Kaplan. Dancing pro-vides me an all round fulfilling experience rather than just focusing on the academic.” Juggling dancing and school comes with its challenges but this does not faze Sean who has consistently scored high distinctions and distinctions for various modules. “I had 2 competitions sandwiched between eco-nomics and human resource management exams last month. Moreover, I am also teaching Latin ballroom for the past 2 years.” Sean admits that it can be tough at times especially when exams and competitions coin-cide. “I have to carefully plan my schedule so that I can allocate equal priority to training, studying and teach-ing without compromising too much on any one area.”

CDS Editorial: Social Media & Your Career
In the age where digital media is part of the modern lifestyle, do you know how to use digital media to your ad-
vantage? Do you know the difference between Facebook and Linkedin? Get smart and clean up your virtual trail!
In this digital age, anyone wired into the digital space is at once connected to someone out there wirelessly. Not many understand
the huge ramifications of the age of Google on our lifestyles, and more importantly, our privacy and security. Are you aware that
your online presence stamps a digital trail on cyberspace which may somewhat affect your professional image?
Can you really differentiate a ‘social account’ and a ‘professional account’? Many of us are regular users of social media platforms
such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Linkedin. The mainstay Facebook has a reported reach of 350 million users worldwide
and most individuals use their accounts for social purposes, connecting with families and friends and gaming through multi-media
connectivity to the plethora of apps and platforms available. There are now more organizations clued into social media and oper-
ate Facebook page and groups for business purposes too. On the other hand, Linkedin’s interfaces and functionalities primarily
project your professional image.
The definition of ‘social account’ and ‘professional account’ is based entirely on our own perceived use of these accounts. Focus on
keeping a professional account separate from your social connections and community discussions on your ‘social account’.
If you have decided you will maintain a professional account for keeping contact with business associates, do not sabotage yourself
by bringing your social circle into this account. Your friends’ casual comments may end up tainting your professional image. Be
mindful that what you post on your social account is being carried over to your other accounts if you have agreed to content shar-
ing with other media accounts in your account settings. Your new high scores, moods, tabloid news interests and social exploits
should not appear on your professional account.
Your Network and Contacts – Quality versus Quantity Does more ‘friends’ and ‘connections’ on digital media accounts mean you
are better connected? Having 10,000 virtual friends or followers does not necessarily equate to networking quality. Be selective
about accepting invitations from people you barely know, many are adding complete strangers without finding out the possible
connection. By adding, you are inviting them into your digital world. By signing up for social media accounts, users are giving up
their right to privacy – the terms and conditions on the sign-up page will
usually tell you so in very small print! In networking, prioritize quality over
quantity. Don’t risk being tagged with some embarrassing posts which could
tarnish your image, which leads to the next question.
Do employers check up employees or job candidates on digital media?
According to a 2013 study by CareerBuilder (2013), employers have ad-
mitted rejecting candidates because of their social media activities. Every-
thing you post online helps determine who you are as a person, not only to
your friends but also your potential employer. The study also shared that
employers look at digital media to gain a sense of behavior and personality
of the person outside of interview or his professional life. Think twice before
you whine about trivial matters and avoid digging a well for yourself with
controversial comments. We have all heard of the recent case of an individ-
ual who have had to leave job and country due to a virtual slip up! In closing,
please watch what you post and check your account settings!

Highlights
St. Patrick’s Day is commemorated every year on 17 March by the Irish communities around the world. Saint Patrick was a patron saint of Ireland credited with spreading Chris-tianity in Ireland.
St. Patrick's Day is celebrated not only in Ireland but also in some big cities and small towns where there are significant Irish populations. Typically, the day is celebrated with pa-rades, wearing green (sometimes from head to toe), music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!
This year, Kaplan and UCD have once again joined hands to support this fun parade that will be happening on 16 March. A march will begin at Old Parliament House and end at Circular Road. A large banner will be provided for participants to hold throughout the march. So come join the green party! Email [email protected]
