UNICEF Response to Philippines Super Typhoon Haiyan has killed thousands and displaced millions. UNICEF estimates 5.5 million of the 13.2 million people affected by the disaster are children! Immediately after the storm, UNICEF Supply Division airlifted water purification tablets, medical kits, tarpaulins, nutrition supplements and other essential goods from its warehouse in Copenhagen. Today, UNICEF is on the ground in Tacloban, Cebu, Roxas, Ormoc and elsewhere assessing needs and delivering aid. So far UNICEF has sent 60 metric tons of emergency

supplies and provided 25,000 liters of clean water per day to Tacloban. Almost 200,000 people in Tacloban now have access to safe drinking water. UNICEF in Tacloban will also start a mass measles immunization campaign in addition to vaccinations. A recent study found that the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan is drawing less attention from the American public than other major international disasters in recent years. What can we do about this? UNICEF at Florida International University raised funds for UNICEF Emergency Relief Efforts in the Philippines by hosting a Relief Benefit show, which featured a variety of live bands, dance performances and delicious Filipino food. Collaborating with on-campus groups like their university's Asian Student Union, Alpha Epsilon Delta and Pre-Health Honor Society, the event was a huge success raising $2000! They were also featured in their school's newspaper!

UNICEF at Texas A&M hosted a Mile of Change, supporting the Eliminate Project for Maternal Neonatal Tetanus, while also having a fundraiser for the Philippines! For the mile of change, coins and dollar bills were taped on large letters spelling out UNICEF. There were also facts spread around the mile of change. The event was great because it allowed participants to see the relationship between their donations and what their money would provide.

Benedictine University UNICEF in Lisle, Illinois hosted Taste the Change, a fundraiser at BD’s Mongolian Grill for the Philippines. Volunteers were able to cook with chefs while other volunteers were able to spread awareness about UNICEF’s relief work in the Philippines. In addition to ALL tips, for every person attending the fundraiser, BD’s Mongolian Grill donated $3 towards UNICEF. It was a success!

UNICEF at Barach College organized Laugh to Save a Life at Gotham Comedy Club in New York City to raise funds for children in Syria and in Philippines, while engaging the audience in a stand up comedy show. Global Citizenship Fellow in New York, Jessica O’Herron said, “It was fun way to raise money!”

UNICEF at Manhattanville College

held a bakesale for the Philippines and celebrated Malala Day by watching clips about education in Pakistan followed by a Panel discussion on how Malala's case reflects global education for women. The club collaborated the Muslim Student Association, Seeds of Peace, the African Studies Department, and the International Studies Department.

UNICEF at Brown University organized a Penny Wars fundraiser! In a Penny War, each competing group has a bucket for collecting coins. The value of pennies collected by a group counts negatively towards a group’s total, while the value of other coins counts positively. Thus in a competition between group A and group B, a contributor who wants group A to win will place nickels, dimes, quarters or coin dollars into group A’s bucket and pennies into group B’s bucket. It’s a great way to make a lot of money in a short amount of time!

UNICEF at University of California Los Angeles In honor of Universal Children's Day, UNICEF at UCLA had an event to raise money for Typhoon Haiyan. With a theme of brownies, bubbles, and balloons, they were able to have a fun presence on campus while still raising awareness about child rights and helping the emergency relief in the Philippines.
