Campus Enterprises was established as a part of the Office of Finance and Business in 2009 to unite NC State’s retail and hospitality organizations, leverage resources and build the organization’s collective capacity to serve the university’s growing needs. In four short years, we’ve done big things. We’ve taken the lead on several major construction and renovation projects, created solutions to campus needs that didn’t exist before and built a reputation for collaboration and innovation. We also do our part to support the university by helping defray administrative costs and funding scholarships and student programming. Not a day goes by when we aren’t making things better on the campus of NC State. DID YOU KNOW?

Since 2010, we have returned more than $4.7 million to NC State students in the form of scholarships and student support programs and initiatives.

We manage more than 650,000 square feet of space.

We have implemented a shared services model for human resources, facilities maintenance, accounting and marketing communications to support our eight service areas.

6 CAMPUS ENTERPRISES 2014-2015

Campus Enterprises is spearheading a number of renovation and new

construction projects at NC State. Our goal is to create attractive, energy-

efficient spaces that are designed to enhance student life and academics.

Our flagship project is the renovation and expansion of Talley Student Union, which broke ground in 2010. The union involves several of our units: University Student Centers, University Dining, NC State Bookstores, Rave! Event Services, Wolfpack One Card Services, and Wolf Xpress Print and Copy Services. These units have worked together, along with the Division of Academic and Student Affairs and the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity, to reinvigorate the college union idea at NC State. The north addition is now open, and the entire facility is expected to be completed by spring 2015.

UNIVERSITY DININGUniversity Dining is committed to giving our students, staff and guests

a place where they can relax, connect and fuel their minds and bodies

for academic success.

To that end, we have invested in our dining program on multiple fronts, renovating and expanding several locations on main campus and adding the first permanent, full-service, public dining operation on Centennial Campus: On the Oval Culinary Creations. We’ve created a menu mix across campus that provides more variety than ever. Our team of 13 professional chefs ensure that every bite is delicious. Our facilities, nutrition programs and sustainability efforts are regarded as being best of the best among our peers. Our dietitian, Lisa Eberhart, has received the Governor’s Award of Excellence for her work to promote healthful eating and to help our guests make informed decisions when they dine with us.

Our “My Roots at NC State” sustainability program brings local foods into our dining halls and promotes our green initiatives, mostly aimed at reducing waste and energy usage. We are proud of our efforts to nourish our campus, and we’ll continue to look for ways we can improve our program in the coming years.

CAMPUS ENTERPRISES 2014-2015 11

Visit our website for a complete listing of dining locations, options and hours of operation.

Of the food we serve in dining halls, 28 percent is procured locally.

We accommodate group visits, ensuring they are served in a timely manner so they can return to their campus program.

We have more than 30 locations across campus, including dining halls, restaurants, cafés, convenience stores and vending machines.

NC STATE BOOKSTORESThe NC State Bookstores has been a fixture at NC State since 1954. We strive to

provide students with everything they need to be successful—such as course

materials, computers, and school supplies—and deliver it in a convenient and

affordable way. We also provide the best selection of Wolfpack apparel and

gifts, class rings and graduation gowns.

Our biggest accomplishment in recent years has been to provide our students with a price comparison tool built into MyPack Portal. Here they can purchase or rent textbooks in the store or online, compare pricing with other major competitors and look up the buy-back value of a textbook. We recently opened the Pack Shop in the new Wolf Ridge Complex on Centennial Campus and established a permanent State Stuff section in the Eye Store at the PNC Arena. We continue to maintain our game-day State Stuff stores on the concourse and at home football games at Carter-Finley Stadium. While we are currently located on the ground floor of Harrelson Hall, we are preparing to move into the new Talley Student Union in spring 2015. Our two-level, 40,000-square-foot store will feature textbooks and course materials on the ground floor. Upstairs, we’ll offer an expanded Apple computer section, a Clinique counter and a wide selection of Wolfpack merchandise and school supplies.

DID YOU KNOW?

Last year, the Bookstore helped students save over $2 million by reducing our prices and expanding our textbook rental program.

The Bookstore’s online price comparison shopping tool ensures that students can find the lowest textbook prices available, saving students over $400 thousand last year.

Anthony Sanders, associate director of NC State Bookstores, won the University Award of Excellence in 2013 for his role in implementing textbook cost-saving initiatives.

UNIVERSITY STUDENT CENTERSUniversity Student Centers provides spaces where students and our

campus community can engage, discover, relax, dine and shop.

Students are at the heart of our operations and serve in many leadership positions, including our board of directors and building staff. Their experience in making strategic and policy decisions governing the student centers gives them critical skills sought by employers, including leadership, management and problem solving. We recently renovated the exterior of Witherspoon Student Center to create interior vestibules and an expanded stage area for outdoor events on Harris Field. We are also in the midst of renovating and expanding Talley Student Union, which is already transforming student life at NC State with the opening of the north addition. In addition to Witherspoon, we are now taking reservations for our various meeting and ballroom spaces within Talley. While anyone can reserve space, our primary obligation is to our campus community. We have merged our reservations and event services department with Rave! Catering to provide a seamless event-planning experience. You can learn more about the new Rave! Event Services on page 14.

LONNIE POOLE GOLF COURSEThe Lonnie Poole Golf Course exemplifies collaboration and innovation at NC

State, advancing academics, research and the game of golf at a university

known for its excellence in both the play and the management of golf.

Completed in 2009, our Arnold Palmer-designed course and new clubhouse facilitate turfgrass and stormwater research conducted by faculty and students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. They also serve as teaching and training facilities for the professional golf management program in the College of Natural Resources and for the men’s and women’s varsity golf teams. In 2013, our course became a certified Audubon International Signature Golf Sanctuary and a member of the organization’s Signature Program. It was the second university facility in the world to achieve this designation.

The course and clubhouse are public facilities. Anyone can enjoy a round of golf or dine in the on-site restaurant, Players Retreat, the second location of the Raleigh favorite famous for the juicy burgers and house-made chips still served at its original home on the corner of Oberlin Road and Hillsborough Street. The breathtaking views of downtown Raleigh and Centennial Campus make it the perfect place to unwind or host a meeting or special event.

DID YOU KNOW?

The facilities are named for alumnus Lonnie Poole and his wife Carol Johnson Poole, to recognize their generous contributions toward the project. Construction of these facilities was funded solely through private donations.

Two members of the golf course design team, Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson, are NC State graduates.

The links are ranked among Golf Week magazine’s top 30 college golf courses in America.

WOLFPACK ONE CARD SERVICESThe Wolfpack One Card is the official identification card for NC State

students, faculty, staff and affiliates. This multi-technology card not only

proves a person’s affiliation with the university, it also allows provides a

secure way move about the campus and access services, making NC State

a secure place to live, study and work.

Thanks to the Wolfpack One Card, only authorized persons can enter certain buildings, rooms, residence halls, labs and parking gates. The card provides access to multiple campus services and accounts, including meal plans, spending accounts, laundry credits and copy funds. The ID card can be used to check out books in the library or access the gym. We introduced a new Debit MasterCard feature in 2012. This prepaid account provides a payment solution accepted worldwide, and it led to a partnership with Hillsborough Street merchants to provide special pricing for students, faculty and staff who pay using the free Debit MasterCard account. We recently worked with the new faculty/staff onboarding center to enable new employees to get their ID cards during their first few days of arriving on campus.

WOLF XPRESS PRINT AND COPYWolf Xpress Print and Copy offers a full range of copy services, including

course-pack production, thesis preparation, poster printing and graduation

announcements. We are also home to the first university-owned Espresso Book

Machine in the Southeastern United States, which is capable of producing

library-quality paperback books in minutes. Whether you want to self-publish

your own book or create a book that is out of print, Wolf Xpress can help.

Over the past year, our business has grown 79 percent as campus departments and professors have come to rely on us to print course materials, stationery, brochures, posters and banners. This shift is primarily due to our high-quality work, expanded offerings, competitive prices, on-campus delivery and interdepartmental charge capability. Most orders can be filled within 24 hours, a welcome option for departments trying to meet a tight deadline. Even if a professor presents a course pack the day before classes start, we can guarantee it will be on the shelf before the class bell rings. In 2013, we designed our own line of custom graduation announcements, and we continue to produce custom projects for customers all across campus.

We recently moved into the new Talley Student Union to better serve our customers. Visitors to our office can watch the Espresso Book Machine in action from the front window. We’re conveniently located between One Earth World Cuisine and Port City Java on the second floor/main level.

TRADEMARK LICENSINGSymbols, icons, traditions and trademarks—such as the Block S, Tuffy the

Strutting Wolf, Mr. Wuf, Wolfpack and NC State—have come to represent the

passion of our alumni, fans, students and student-athletes. Trademark Licensing

seeks to protect these marks, promote the university through the use of these

marks and generate revenue through licensed trademark royalties. These

royalties help fund scholarships and the Campus Enterprises endowment.

We’ve placed an emphasis on managing our expanding network of commercial licensees, stressing consistency in the use of our trademarks, and enforcement to protect against infringement. This focus has increased our trademark royalties by 44 percent over the past three years, now earning more than $1 million each year. We also work with more than 500 student organizations and campus departments to ensure proper use of NC State’s trademarks on T-shirts or promotional items, providing them tools like our website and a Google Docs Trademark Use Request form to streamline the process. We sponsor two annual contests to recognize NC State fans who best embody the Wolfpack spirit: the Tailgate Championship during football season at Carter-Finley Stadium and the FanCave Challenge in February. Fans enjoy these opportunities to compete for recognition, elevating the brand among our core constituency. It has taken more than 125 years for NC State to build its brand. We protect it, promote it and ensure that the university will continue to benefit from it for years to come.

CAMPUS ENTERPRISES 2014-2015 25

ncsu.edu/trademarks

DID YOU KNOW?

The trademark licensing program at NC State began in 1982-83. The first year’s total royalties were $91,806. Today’s annual royalties are more than $1.25 million.

Trademark licensing royalties have funded $10.4 million dollars in scholarships and endowment since its inception.

We now work with more than 450 commercial licensees and review more than 6,000 designs that incorporate NC State trademarks each year.
