Women on the Move Thurs. 3/8, noon-1pm Location: Senate Chambers (1st floor, Eshleman Hall) An urban cycling empowerment workshop for women. Road Skills Part II Sat. 4/14, 9am-2:30pm Location: Wheeler 101 Improve your handling skills, emergency maneuvers, and ability to confidently and safely share the road with other traffic. Led by certified instructors from the East Bay Bike Coalition. A functional bike is required, drinks and snacks provided. Tips for your Bike Commute Mon. 4/23, noon-1pm Location: Senate Chambers (1st floor, Eshle- man Hall) Get ready for Bike to Work Day with advice and wisdom from a (real! live!) urban bike commuter. Team Bike Challenge Meet & Greet Tues. 4/24, 5-6pm Location: Free Speech Cafe (entrance to Mof- fitt Library) Team Bike Challenge is a month-long chal- lenge where teams compete to see who can ride the most miles during the month of May. Meet other riders and join a team! Bike to Work Day Thurs. 5/10, all day Background Transportation to and from UC Berkeley accounts for ~10% of campus greenhouse gas emissions. Travel surveys show that over 50% of staff/faculty/visitors drive to campus. There is much potential to achieve a transportation mode shift at UC Berkeley by promoting commute alternatives. Increased rid- ership will measurably reduce the campus community’s carbon footprint both at the university and in our neighboring communities. The Campus Bicycle Initiative is working to in- crease bicycling rates through: Promoting, Supporting and Celebrating Campus demand for bicycle support services is overwhelming! On Campus Bike Day, students descended upon Lower Sproul Plaza for free bike tune-ups, donated by mechanics from BicyCal and local bike shops Missing Link, Mike’s Bikes and R.E.I. They stayed to jam – and pedal – along with live music bumping from Rock the Bike’s unique pedal powered stage. Campus Bike Initiative intern Claire Porter demonstrates safe riding behavior: both hands on the handlebars and wear a helmet.
