Camping Choices for Summer 2014
Presented by Matthew Estes of Troop 870 University Baptist Church In the Bayshore District Of the Sam Houston Area Council - BSA
Camp Liberty The best in "patrol cooking" with everything provided for successful campsite cooking. It has 14 troop sites, a central area, waterfront, rifle and archery ranges, two troop showers, leaders' and staff shower and a campfire area. The central area consists of the Program Hall (adult centered), Commissary/Quartermaster/Trading Post building (boy centered), parade ground with flagpoles, and a staff dining/lounge building. The waterfront has both swimming and boating areas. The boating area is equipped with canoes, motor boats, rowboats, and sailboats. Water-ski boats arrive at the camp for merit badge instruction. Camp Freedom Facilities at Camp Freedom are identical to those in Camp Liberty, with the exception of the 350-seat Camp Freedom dining hall located near the leaders' and staff shower. Many troops invite their families to join them for the Wednesday evening family night.

Located near Blairsville, in Georgia's Appalachian mountains, Robert W. Woodruff Scout Reservation is a 1,545-acre camp property adjacent to Lake Notley and the Chattahoochee National Forest. The beautiful north Georgia Mountains surround most of the camp. Woodruff offers a spectacular 86-acre mountain lake, a climbing/rappelling tower, nature center, trading post, a COPE Course, astronomy, shooting sports, heavily wooded campsites, and great hiking trails. Scouts have the opportunity to enjoy our great aquatic area or visit the nearby Nantahala or Ocoee Rivers for whitewater rafting, canoeing, or tubing. The Appalachian Trail and Cohutta Wilderness is close at hand and offers the opportunity for extended backpacking trips

At Camp Pioneer, all troop sites have wall tents, cots and mattress set up and ready for the use of Scouts and leaders. Each site is equipped with showers, restrooms, a storage building for equipment and a large shelter for troop meetings. Several of the troop sites are accessible to the physically handicapped. Swimming is held in two junior Olympic pools. Boating and canoeing are in Mountain Fork River. For first-year Scouts, we offer the Pioneer Trail to First Class (formerly "Scout Skills") program, which focuses on developing skills necessary to achieve the rank of First Class. This area is designed with younger Scouts in mind, and is organized so that each Scout receives instruction and completes the skills at his own pace. For older Scouts, Camp Pioneer offers a variety of Eagle-required merit badges, as well as other exciting programs, such as the COPE course, the Little Rich Mountain climbing tower, and the Mountain Man living-history program.
