From the Principal’s Desk…

I was delighted to work back stage

with our Victorian State Schools

Spectacular dance team at Hisense

Arena on Saturday, seeing them step

up to the performance stage after many

months of rehearsals. The event is

planned and performed on a grand

scale, with thousands of primary and

secondary students from all over

Victoria coming together for two full

days of rehearsals prior to the two public performances on

Saturday.

I am very appreciative of the excellent work done by staff

members Annette Timilsina, Amy Stephenson, Kate Johnston

and Kim Wines to plan for and support our students’

participation again in 2019. Our dancers also benefitted from

the considerable time and care demonstrated by parent helpers

Paula Robertson (costumes) and Sheree Horspole and Paula

Regan (backstage support and supervision). The family

support of all participants is an important element in the

ongoing success and sustainability of the school’s

involvement.

The biggest thank you must of course go to the participating

students themselves: Taylor Bernaldo, Pippa Britton, Stella

Horspole, Archie McLachlan-James, Skylar Jenkins, Tulin

Meric, Zack Regan, Sadie Walsh, Georgia Walters, Olivia

Winsall, Callani Winsall and Perrie Winsall. These Year 4, 5

and 6 students demonstrated great commitment over an

extended period of time and impressive levels of stamina and

resilience in Melbourne over the three day final rehearsal and

performance period. I hope they have taken away many happy

memories and the satisfaction of a job very well done!

Our school review panel met for the final time last Friday, to

receive feedback from our external reviewer Lucy Glover and

agree on future directions for Camperdown College. Earlier

in the week Lucy spent time with Junior and Senior Campus

students and teachers exploring the key question posed by

the panel: to what extent are our students and teachers

supported to be reflective, questioning and self-managing

learners? These conversations, along with further classroom

observations and examination of the school’s outcomes and

achievements over the past four years, provided insights

which will shape our next level of work.

School Council will receive the official review report early

next term and the work of developing the detailed 2019-2022

strategic plan will take place during Term 4. The review

panel was very affirming of the work that has already been

undertaken at school, noting a culture of high expectations

and a collective commitment to learning and improvement.

The new strategic plan will build upon the work of the past

four years, embedding processes and support structures for

students to be active agents in their learning, and

consolidating school-wide literacy practices.

Students, teachers and families all seem to be in agreement

about how quickly Term 3 has come and gone. Transition

has been an important focus school-wide, with students

taking courageous next steps with great support from

families and school staff. Next term will see further

opportunities for students to be challenged and extended in

their learning: five Year 9 students will head to Dinner Plain

for their nine week School for Student Leadership

experience, our Year 12 VCE students will apply their

knowledge and understanding to their final exams, and

VCAL students will see the Mow Down through to

completion stage. Best wishes to all students for an

enjoyable September break and a productive and successful

final term.

Our team of twelve students embraced the VSSS challenge that pushed them out of their comfort zones. They learned dance routines to the following songs: Geronimo, Can’t Hold Us, How Far I’ll Go, Pon De Replay, Break In and Another Day of Sun and Wings to a very high standard. Students attended several regional rehearsals, working with VSSS dance choreographers and also participated in many lunch time rehearsals, backed up with hours of practice at home.

Last Thursday 13th and Friday 14th September, our VSSS team attended full dress rehearsals at Hisense Area in Melbourne which prepared them for the two public performances on Saturday 15th September. Students were pushed both mentally and physically over the three days and showed a high level of persistence and resilience. The costumes were a highlight of the experience along with the lights, stage, cameras and principal performers.

Students would like to share with you the best parts about their VSSS experience: Zack: It was fun getting up really early and dancing in front of all

of those people. Archie: I loved getting McDonald’s on the way home and when I

got to see my mum after the show. Tulin: The best parts were dancing on the stage and spending time

with my friends. Skylar: I think that doing the main show and getting

McDonald’s were the best parts about VSSS. Olivia: I loved dancing and having fun with my friends who I was

dancing with. Callani: The best parts about VSSS was the dancing and getting

into the different costumes. Perrie: I loved learning all of the different dances and being able

to perform in front of the massive crowd. Seeing the principal dancers and vocalists was incredible too.

Taylor: I think that meeting new people from different schools and dancing in front of a lot of people was the best.

Pippa: I loved it when the lights came on and the excitement that I felt out on stage.

Georgia: The best part was the performance and the rehearsals. Stella: My favourite thing about VSSS was being able to dance

with all of my friends and having lots of fun. Sadie: I loved dancing at Hisense area and wearing the different

costumes.

The students were amazing both leading up to the production and during our three days in Melbourne. They represented Camperdown College to the highest level possible and showed kindness and respect for each other. The excitement on their faces was fantastic to see and they were all very proud of themselves.

Another busy term has passed. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all students on their efforts

this term. Students have worked very hard to try their best and make good choices, led by fine example and

have embraced the challenges that have been offered. The behaviour of students has been commendable both

within and outside the classroom. They have once again shown that they are caring and most tolerant of

individual differences.

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge on behalf of the College community, our students past and

present who are participating in the Hampden League Grand Final on Saturday. To the football players we

wish them every success and hope that they don’t move the ball up and back too much and make the day easier

for College Captain, Ethan Coates who has earned and been awarded the privilege of boundary umpire for

this game. Waterboys, Year 9 students Bailey McDonald and James O’Neil, keep the players hydrated and

feel free to add some encouraging words. Eliza O’Neil, we hope that you have a great game of netball and win the Under 13 flag.

Congratulations:

Our students have been busy outside of school and I would like to highlight and congratulate:

Guy Faber: Guy plays soccer with the Corangamite Lions at Scotts Creek and in a 6-1 Preliminary Final has made it to the

Grand Final to be played on Sunday in the A grade competition at Warrnambool. We wish Guy every success and hope that

he has some luck in his role as wing back.

Olivia Maskell, Annabel Lucas and Sophie Swayn: The girls all made it to the Preliminary Final last Saturday in the U17

Hampden League Netball.

Jordan Watson: Jordan has been awarded a scholarship to a music camp in January.

Olivia Henzen: Olivia has been selected to take part in the Rotary sponsored program Defying the Drift to be held at

Longerenong College over the holidays.

Angus Gordon: Angus umpired the Year 3/4 AFL 9’s football matches at Noorat last Friday.

Zoe Wilkinson: Zoe won the Women’s Open Hockey Grand Final in Warrnambool last week playing for Submarines.

Health Day:

Jackie Grant, Kathryn Robertson and Claire Blackstock organised a series of workshops for Year 7 – 10 students to participate in for

their termly health day conducted earlier this week. The students listened to Vic Police on laws surrounding teenagers especially in

relation to social media; participated in a workshop on DARE (Drug and Alcohol Responding Early), a Brophy conducted session on

Inclusion and Doctors in Schools session conducted by our resident GP. In the afternoon, the students enjoyed a Zumba class and past

School for Student Leadership students, Lauren McIlveen, Ellie Walsh, Ethan Coates, Zach McKenzie, Otto Leonard-Pekin, Harry

Sumner and Grace Jopling under the guidance of Grace Lee led trust and initiative activities.

Greater Western Regional Athletics:

Charlie Tickner, Declan Tickner, Ethan Coates, Jack Helmore, Dalton Mitchell,

Thomas Nicholson, Harry Sumner and Ellie Walsh competed in the Greater Western

Regional Athletics in Warrnambool on Monday. Ethan came second in the triple

jump and javelin (pictured far right) and the boys Under 16 relay team consisting of

Thomas, Harry, Angus and Charlie come in third (pictured right). Congratulations to

these students for making it through to this level. Thank you to Simon Baker and

Jesse Van for accompanying the students.

Parent Teacher Interviews:

Thank you to all parents who attended our Parent Teacher Interviews last week. We value the opportunity to discuss progress and

work in partnership to get the best out of the students in our care. If you were unable to make it and would like to meet with any

teachers please make contact.

Year 12 Revision:

Most course work has been completed for Year 12 subjects and now students must focus on revision content and preparing responses

for the exams – Year 12 students should be very busy over the holidays! Students have been given a timetable outlining the revision

sessions have been organised during the first week of the holidays and beyond. Thank you to teachers for putting time aside to deliver

and organise these valuable sessions.

Celebration Assembly:

Our end of term Celebration Assembly will be held tomorrow at 9am. Parents and friends are most welcome to attend this event

where we acknowledge the progress and success that students have achieved throughout the term.

Vicki Angus, Senior Campus Assistant Principal

Junior Campus Concert:

After much anticipation tonight is the night that our Junior Campus students will come under the spotlight, with

our 2018 Junior Campus Annual Concert taking place at the AG Daws Hall. Commencing at 7pm, our students

will sing, dance and act their way through the evening with many laughs and proud moments guaranteed.

Students have worked hard with their teachers preparing for the event; organising costumes, rehearsing lines

and perfecting dance moves and are extremely excited to perform in front of our College community. Students

are asked to be at the AG Daws Hall by 6.45pm ready for a 7pm start. I hope to see you all there!

Victorian State Schools Spectacular:

Our team of Year 4 – 6 students showcased their talents as part of the Victorian State Schools Spectacular With The Beat on stage at

Hisense Arena last weekend performing in the mass dance group of 1,200 students. The students confidently displayed their dancing

skills in front of a large and enthusiastic audience and we know the real magic of the Spectacular is not only the performing of the

show, but the friendships made and the confidence gained. Thanks must go to Mrs Johnston and Mrs Wines for their coordination of

the event and their dedication in rehearsing with the students over many lunchtimes over the last three terms. Also thanks to Sheree

Horspole, Paula Regan and Ms Kilpatrick who assisted back stage with the students at both rehearsals and the live shows.

Lions Eye Health Program:

At Camperdown College we are fortunate to have strong links

with numerous local service clubs. This week, the Camperdown

Lions Club conducted individual, comprehensive screening tests

for students in Prep and Year 6. This initiative is provided by the

Lions Eye Health Program Australia with the aim of identifying

children who require further eye testing as it is estimated that 1:5

children in Australia have undetected vision problems. On behalf

of Camperdown College, I wish to thank members of the Lions

Club for the support offered to our College.

ICAS English Competition:

Congratulations to the following students who participated in the ICAS English competition: Philippa Kempton, Tida Majidpour, Finn

Tolland, Ruby Kempton and Riley Stephenson all received participation certificates and Joshua Lucas and Oliver Clark received

credit certificates.

Year 3/4 AFL 9’s:

Last Friday, a team of Year 3/4 students participated in an AFL 9’s round robin at the Noorat Recreation Reserve. Students

participated in several games of modified AFL rules. The aim of the day was about participation and inclusion rather than

competition. From all accounts, our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Footy Colours Day:

The Junior School Council invite all Prep – Year 6 students to participate in a Footy Colours Day tomorrow. The cost to dress up is

$1.00, with all proceeds been allocated to our sensory play space at the Junior Campus. Students who have pre-ordered lunch will be

treated to a hot dog and fruit box. During lunchtime, there will be the annual Year 6 students vs staff/parents football match

commencing at 12.45pm.

Attendance Awards:

At our end of term assembly on Friday, students who have achieved 100% attendance for Term 3 (which officially concluded on

Friday 14th September) will be presented with golden attendance awards. These certificates acknowledge the efforts of students who

attend school every day, with nominal lateness. Attendance and arrival times are recorded daily via Compass and lateness is

accumulated over the term which may equate to attendance below 100%. Congratulations to the following students on attending

school every day during Term 3: Lawson Clark, Noah Boyd, Vogue Fleming, Fletcher Gibbins, Zander Horan, Reagan Webb, Enya

Cole, Tyson Creely, Luke Economidis, Rhett Fleming, Miller Murphy, Mason Narik, Chase Fleming, Isla Spokes, Sam Tolland,

Charlie Burnett, Quinn Clark, Sophie Wilson, Oliver Clark, Lila Horspole, Tulin Meric, Patrick Spokes, Skylar Jenkins, Fletcher

Tolland, Jackson Bennett, Isabella Foster, Ally Havenaar, Aaron Hemingway, Stella Horspole, Aaron Kirchheiner, Finn Tolland,

Leilah Bateman, Lewis Regan, Riley Stephenson and Xavier Warren.

Silver (99%) and Bronze (98%) attendance awards will be sent home with students tomorrow. Our attendance this term has again

been strong although the recent illness that affected so many of our students has impacted our attendance. We are proud to announce

that 33.69% of Prep – Year 6 students achieved an attendance rate of 98% (which is no more than one day absent) or more during a

very cold and wet Term 3. With the warmer weather just around the corner, our Term 4 attendance data should increase significantly.

Assembly and Early Dismissal:

Our Celebration of Learning Assembly will be held at 1.45pm in the BER building tomorrow afternoon. Students will be presented

with awards for special achievements over the term and golden attendance awards will also be presented. Term 3 concludes tomorrow

and classes finish early at 2.30 pm. I hope all our students enjoy their holidays and return to school on Monday 8th October well

rested and ready for another huge term of learning.

Term 3: Dance/Gymnastics

To celebrate the conclusion of our Term 3 Sporting

Schools program, the students are performing at the

Junior Campus Celebration Assembly tomorrow,

Friday 21st September from 1.45pm.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all

participating students who have worked so hard

practising this routine for the past seven weeks and of

course, thank you to our coach, Airlee Cole and

assistant Bernadette Bellman.

I do hope to see you all come along and enjoy this

performance and remember, eat healthy and be active!

Sally Sutterby, Sporting Schools Coordinator

Thank you to students and parents who gave feedback to assist

School Council with the Uniform Policy review. This feedback was

taken to the School Council meeting this week for consideration.

The Senior Campus was delighted to welcome back three

alumni business owners: Davina Pickles of Ray White Real

Estate; Tracey Baker of Nature Direct and Kellie Kempton of

Prosser’s Panel Beating. The alumni spoke to Jesse Van’s

combined Year 9/10 Entrepreneurial elective students about

their journey into private business, and later helped students

apply some of their classroom work to their actual business.

The students gained real insights into the world of business and

entrepreneurship, and were inspired by our alum’s stories,

advice and hard-earned wisdom. Check out the Camperdown

College Alumni Facebook page and email us at

Prep students explore Mount Leura:

During Term 3, Prep students have been learning about My Community during Integrated Studies. They

have explored lots of special and important places in their community. Last Thursday, Prep students

trekked up to Mt Leura where they met Graham Arkinstall and Tania Moloney. Arky and Tania spoke

to the Preps about how Mt Leura has changed and what we can do to care for it. The Preps loved

exploring the natural features of Mt Leura and making numbers using things from the environment.

Thank you so much to Arky and Tania for taking the time to share your knowledge with our students!

On Friday 7th September, Year 3/4 students walked to

Woolworths in Camperdown for a Kids Discovery Tour.

Upon arrival students received an apron and hat to wear. The

tour involved seeing how the supermarket works behind the

scenes. Students entered cool rooms, freezers, storage rooms,

watched fruit being cut for the shelf and saw how the cardboard

crusher worked. They discovered that fruit and vegetables don’t

all grow the same way, learnt about sustainability and waste

reductions, such as odd-shaped produce not affecting the taste

and should not necessarily be thrown away. Students made their

own fruit kebabs and received a goody bag to take home. On

behalf of Camperdown College, Year 3/4 students would like to

thank the team at Woolworths Camperdown for allowing us to

tour their amazing supermarket and for making us feel welcome.

Kim Wines, Year 3/4 Teacher

Thank you Fonterra: Camperdown College would like to thank Fonterra in Cobden for their generous donation of goods that have allowed our students to design, create and construct in the Junior Campus Art Room. Your support of our College is greatly appreciated!

College Café students have been learning

how to foam milk on our new

commercial Expresso Machine that has

been purchased for the Food Technology

Room and will be used for fundraising

events by the College.

The students are all very excited to learn

how to foam milk and make a good latte;

all skills that will transfer into a

workplace very easily. Hopefully we will

soon have some talented young baristas

in our student population.

Jean Wood Music Awards: On Saturday 8th September, instrumental music students Leilah Bateman, Lewani Bateman, Charlie Burnett, Lila Horspole,

Stella Horspole, Nancy Leonard-Pekin and Jordan Watson all auditioned for the annual Jean Wood Music Awards. Each student

was interviewed and had to prepare two pieces to play for an adjudication panel. Every student worked very hard to perfect their

performances for their audition.

Last Monday 17th September students attended the Jean Wood Music Awards Presentation Ceremony at the Terang RSL. Leilah

Bateman, who played two pieces on the piano was awarded runner up for the Junior Prize. She received free concert tickets to

the Port Fairy Spring Festival. Lewani Bateman and Jordan Watson were both awarded runners up for the Senior Prize. Lewani

received free concert tickets to the Port Fairy Spring Festival and Jordan received a place at the Geelong Summer Music

Camp.

Congratulations to Leilah, Lewani and Jordan! Well done to all of our instrumental music students for auditioning for the Jean

Wood Music Awards! Our music students have all gained valuable musical experience participating the auditions. We are very

fortunate to have a local annual Music Awards to encourage our instrumental music students.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Workshop: I am very excited to announce that four musicians from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will be visiting Camperdown

College to run a Workshop with our instrumental music students on Friday 21st September. The Workshop will be interactive

and will prepare students for their upcoming music excursion to see the MSO perform at the Lighthouse Theatre in

Warrnambool on Friday 19th October. We are very grateful to philanthropic funding which has fully funded this workshop and

given our students the opportunity to work closely with MSO musicians. Students need to remember bring their instruments to

school on Friday!

Geelong Summer Music Camp: Camperdown College students who are 9 years or older and like to sing or play an instrument are all eligible to apply for the

Geelong Summer Music Camp. Students can sing in an amazing choir and learn from top choral educators or play in a band or

orchestra, as well attend electives such as drama and photography. On Friday 19th January students perform in a huge and

spectacular GSMC Concert.

The Geelong Summer Music Camp is a day camp and will be held from 13th – 19th January. The camp costs about $250. GSMC

can arrange billeted accommodation for country students with Geelong families attending the camp for about $70 for the week.

Jordan Watson and Tim Fagan have attended GSMC, along with other local music students, and found it to be a fantastic

experience! If you think the GSMC sounds like you can apply www.gsmc.org.auwww.gsmc.org.au
