CAMPBELLTOWN
JOGGERS NEWS ISSUE: JULY 2018
CAMPBELLTOWN JOGGERS PAGE 1
PRESIDENT’S REPORT UPCOMING…
We’ve had some cold mornings down at Bradbury lately and no one would
disagree that our shed would be much better positioned on the other side of
the building in the sun, but we’ve still had plenty of members there braving
the cold.
It’s definitely fun run season with plenty of opportunities to try your luck at
various distances away from Bradbury. Congratulations to those who recently
supported Westies at Festival of the Feet – there was plenty of CJC success.
One of the biggest days on the CJC calendar is coming up soon – City to
Surf. We will be sending one bus to the city to drop off the competitors and
another to Bondi with our support crew. If you would like to come along for a
great day, please book your seat ASAP.
Everyone enjoys morning tea after our Sunday runs – there’s often a time
when we chat for longer than we run! I’d like to extend the club’s thanks to
the ladies who regularly donate the morning tea goodies – cakes, slices,
biscuits, long-life milk – these are all donated by a handful of members. If
other members could take the opportunity to donate a packet of biscuits or a
carton of milk from time to time it would be greatly appreciated.
Any member on Facebook would be extremely jealous of our members who
are enjoying the European sunshine at present! Congratulations to Steve who
celebrated his 50th Birthday by completing the Lavaredo Ultra Trail, in fine
style. Michele, Ted, Angela and Mal have also completed quite the journey
on their bikes and will soon be re-joining us, and I’m sure they will have plenty
of stories to tell after the Sunday morning run.
I would like to thank the Track crew who have ensured that the track has
continued to run without a glitch in Ted’s absence. It’s been cold most weeks,
some even raining but Denis and Steve have been there each week
supported by Irene, Tina, Sharon, Tania, Cathy, Wendy and Craig – and
others who have assisted. Each week I go prepared to volunteer but I’ve been
able to run as we have had a multitude of helpers. A job well done guys and
a massive thank you!!! Thank you also to Sylvia, Emma, Paul, Locky and
everyone else who have assisted me at the Junior Cross Country events.
Good luck this Sunday!! Whilst it might be cold – it’s perfect PB weather!
Enjoy!

Run smart. When beginning or getting back into training,
remember speed kills. Don’t go too fast too quick.

Scholarship reward for rising star of the track
Narellan Vale teenager David Baker is one of the region’s brightest athletics stars.
A member of Camden Athletics Club, Baker has been rewarded for his excellent performances with a scholarship at the South West Sydney Academy of Sport (SWSAS), through its Wests Future Stars program.
Baker is the current NSW junior champion in the 3000m and NSW all schools champion in the 5000m.
On the national stage he has already achieved some very solid results including a 13th in the 5000m.
He won the Fishers Ghost fun run in the open division and has also won his age division in the world’s biggest fun run, the City2Surf.
Last year Baker covered the 14 kilometres from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach in just 47 minutes.
The teenager developed a love of running through the global phenomenon that is parkrun.
He is often running the streets of Campbelltown on a Sunday morning as he
goes for a 15 kilometre jog with his friends at the Campbelltown Joggers Club.
Academy sports program manager James Watson, who is himself an accomplished distance runner, is very positive about Baker’s prospects.
“This young athlete is a very raw talent; he has only been running for a couple of years and his improvement in recent times is, to be honest, remarkable.
“I have watched David race many times; along with his obvious talent he has another gift – he just loves to race.
“David has that ability to just keep pushing his limits when every muscle in his body is screaming at him to stop.
“Determination and a willingness to suffer are very hard qualities to teach,’’ Mr Watson said.
“David brings these qualities in bucket loads. He is very tough.”
Through the Wests Future Stars program, SWSAS has engaged former Olympic coach Sean Williams to oversee the teenage star’s development. Williams is a highly regarded coach who specialises in endurance athletics. He coached dual Olympian Ben St Lawrence to a national record in the 5000m.
“This is a very hard sport and the climb to the top takes many, many years,’’ Watson said.
“There are numerous factors to be considered and with David currently committed to his HSC studies time management and general wellbeing are important factors. A holistic approach and patience are key because burnout and injury are very real factors. David would race every weekend if he could, so engaging the right people to make sure we get the balance right is our job.’’
David Baker is currently in cross-country mode and will be a strong contender at NSW All Schools Cross Country
Championship to be held on July 27.

A MASCOT and a MARATHON
CJC member Mitchell Delamotte has had a busy month of running. Following the training and guidance from his coach Kay Heinecke, Mitchell completed his first marathon at the Gold Coast. Shortly after, Mitchell won a 100m race dressed as a mascot for the Sydney Blue Sox baseball team. Mitchell recounts his mascot run here…
On Sunday I competed in my first ever mascot race. Although I had just finished my first marathon, I hadn’t competed over 100 metres since high school and I quickly realized that was quite some time ago! The Sydney Blue Sox received an invitation from the Dragons NRL team to compete in a mascot charity race. I spend a lot of my summer at the baseball and help out occasionally. I’m quite well known with the staff, so they immediately extended the invitation to me. We of course nominated the Stillbirth Foundation as our charity organisation. I’ve come to unfortunately run all of my races for the Stillbirth Foundation since my daughter Pia was stillborn in January 2017, the reason I took up running.
With only a week’s notice and still in recovery mode from my first marathon I couldn’t prepare too much. Worse yet, being a mascot race I couldn’t investigate the form of the other runners! Upon arrival to the race I gave everyone there a quick look over and decided I had at least a chance to podium. It’s not a very wise thing to do, I myself don’t really have a runner’s body but for now it’s all I could go off! We were instructed to have a bit of fun and muck around for the first 50 metres and then race it home. I was there to win however! I took the first 40 metres easy, keeping an eye on the rest of the field. With 60 metres to go I thought (wrongly looking back at the video) that the turtle was ahead of me and I took off! I’m glad I did because he came home a lot stronger than I did! I won the race by about 5 metres from a solid Cronulla shark who edged out the turtle.
I’ve pulled up with a sore hamstring but I did win the giant $3000 novelty cheque which sadly I didn’t get to keep! But the money is real and it is going to an amazing charity that has really helped me out!
