Camp Kudzu’s MissionAdopted April, 2010
2
“Camp Kudzu educates, inspires and empowers children with
diabetes.
‘Til there’s a cure, there’s Camp!”
3
Diabetes Camp is Essential• Type 1 diabetes: a demanding and incurable auto-immune disease
• Children and Families are responsible for hour-by-hour medical self-management • Isolation, the burden of self-care and
the cost can lead to poor long-term medical outcomes:
RetinopathyKidney diseaseVascular and heart diseasePeripheral nerve damageDepression
• Camp is educational, supportive, a respite for kids and families, and FUN!
4
What Children Gain from Diabetes Camp
• Education about insulin, carbohydrate counts, nutrition, and physical activity
• Real-life experience with “best practices” diabetes management techniques
• Immersion into an environment of learning about the factors that affect blood glucose levels
• Role models, peer support and inspiration.
• A break from the burden of self-care as Camp’s clinical staff and counselors help manage each child’s diabetes
• Friends who understand; adults who care.
5
Camp Kudzu – Best in Class• American Camp Association accredited. Very few diabetes camps
around the world have this accreditation. Over 300 standards of care, planning, operation, risk management and staffing have been evaluated.

staff with education and credentials in their fields of expertise.

Strategic Plan
12
1. Expand educational element in every Camp Kudzu activity
2. Maintain character of the community served, distinguished by its diversity
of culture, race, socio-economics
3. Deepen sense of community
4. Expand geographic sites for activities
5. Create basis to document outcomes and Return on Investment
6. Invert fundraising model to rely on individuals for 75% of donated revenue
7. Generate sufficient financial resources to minimize the cost to families
8. Assess opportunity for external research projects, e.g., clinical, medical
devices, etc.
9. Add diversity to the Camp Kudzu Board consistent with the population we
serve
10. Assess potential to own and operate a Camp Kudzu site
