P&C School Calendars

I hope every family have their 2018 school calendar providedby the P&C. They are a great reference point for school relatedevents during the year.

Cyber-bullying Information Sessions

At the close of the holidays, the community became aware ofthe tragic impacts of cyberbullying on younger members of thecommunity.

I have organised with a Project Support Officer from DETInformation and Technologies branch to provide a whole ofschool Information Awareness program on Cyberbullying. Theproposed program includes:

I believe that this program will empower our community torespond to this worldwide issue in an informed and confidentmanner. The need to empower our students to managecyberbullying will be an ongoing issue for this generation, butone that can be achieved with skills and understanding.

Students in younger years will also be made aware of theinherent complexities of using the internet, as well as be shownsafety strategies relevant to their age and access. I encourageparents to continue to review your supervision of your children’saccess to information technology and social media.

P&C Air-conditioning

I must share our prep students, teachers and family’sappreciation of the air-conditioners installed by our verysupportive P&C. I am sure that the Year 1 and 2 cohorts aresupporting this valued fund raising program.

Parent Information Sessions

Parent information sessions for Prep and Year 1 occurred onthe last day of the Pupil Free week – these were highlysupported and I would like to thank everyone for yourcontributions to the sessions.

Information sessions for students in Years 2 – Year 6 will occurearly in the term. Teachers will send home information for theirfamilies in regards to the timing of these sessions.

Communication

The school has a range of communication channels. Theseinclude:

I am confident that all our students are well settled into theirschool routines and enjoying their new learning adventures.I encourage parents to talk with their children about theirindividual learning goals and to consider setting personal goals.Having a personal/learning goal is the key to developing theskills of planning and reviewing. Taking time to reflect uponthe elements of a goal, and the tasks required to achieving it,and to celebrate the achievement of the goal is a very powerfulpersonal learning.

Best wishesDeborah Driver

Deputy ReportWelcome to all our new families who have started at Camp Hillthis year, as well as our many returning families. The School hashad a calm start to the year with students and families meetingnew teachers, organising routines, organising equipment andsettling into a new year of learning. It is always a big changefor young children getting into a new routines, new friendshipgroups and new adults to work with. It is not unusual forchildren to be shy, teary and a little “out of sorts” as they getused to the new changes in their schooling. This should passwithin a few days or a few weeks for some. Older children canbe anxious with a change of classroom, teacher and friendshipgroups. This also is quite normal, and should pass quickly. The teachers are experienced with these reactions at the startof a year and will handle them with care and in a positivemanner. If you have ongoing concerns, please contact yourchild’s teacher or talk to the school administration.

Children are also very tired at this time of year, having to engagein a very packed curriculum and activities within each schoolday. Please ensure they are getting to bed early and gettingadequate sleep. It may be mindful to set a few weeks asidewithout a whole lot of extracurricular activities in the afternoons,as well as planning much needed down time for the weekends.

This is a good time of the year to start setting up some schoolrelated routines at home as well. In the early years, students canwork toward independence with dressing for school, organisingtheir bag, looking at the school/class calendar to see what isneeded for the day and completing any homework. Homeworkwill start shortly in Years 1 and 2. Homework is not meant tobe an arduous task for children or parents, but is meant toestablish a small home routine (which will increase as your childgets older), as well as review school work undertaken in class. If you have any concerns about homework, please talk to yourclassroom teacher.

Children in the upper years of primary should show moreindependence with the organisation routines expected of them.Using their student diary would be a beneficial strategy.Children should know what is happening each day, whatequipment they need and what they need to plan for thecoming week. With increased independence, students willdevelop the necessary skills to function in the coming yearsahead.

embedded in teaching and learning. The “C” focus for thismonth, February, is COURTESY.

We are mindful of this as we settle into the new school yearbeing aware of how our words and actions affect others.

Each class in the Junior Campus will look at how we can belike Connie Confidence and Charlie Confidence as we beginour 2018 school journey. The children will engage in confidencebuilding activities as they settle in to starting school or being in anew class group. Attention will be centred on not being afraid tomake mistakes when learning new things, making new friendsand becoming used to new surroundings.

Connie and Charlie are characters from the ‘You Can Do It’Program, a Social Skills program developed and designed foryoung children, which is used in HoM lessons. The students willmeet each character via puppets, songs and related stories.

The Senior Campus students will review the characters fromthe Y.C.D.I. program and reflect upon how they have becomemore confident, organised, persistent, and resilient and howthey relate and get along with others.
