Leiston Lullaby

Our bus left Long Melford, it was pouring with rain. The driver was helpful but drove us insane. He drove far too quick, and Mandy felt sick.Being Girl Guides we didn’t complain, complain, complain.

It thundered and lightning, but we didn’t care.We held our Guides own, with a hymn and a pray. Then cocoa and bed, and the Guiders all said,‘No talking or we will go spare, go spare, go spare.

We went to the beach, on hot sunny day.And walked through the cow muck for part of the way.We splashed in the sea, then came home for tea.Our clothes soaking wet from the spray, the spray, the spray.

We went to Thorpness, Aldeburgh and Leiston too.And thankfully visited the public loo.We went on a hike, which every one liked. And a trail by Robert and Boo, and Boo, and Boo.

The rangers invited Mrs Hogger to dine. They cooked her some food, but forgot about wine. She was dressed like a queen, a sight to be seen. And the transport by trailer was fine, was fine, was fine.

Tomorrow we’re leaving the campsite for home.To sleep on a bed with a pillow of foam. We’ve all had some fun, and even some sun.And next year to new campsites we’ll roam, we’ll roam, we’ll roam.

(About camp 1979 –Leiston)

Dullingham Ditty

Softly at the end of day,As our campsite is washed away.Silently each Guide should think.Shall I swim, or shall I sink

Guide Marching Song

Who are these, swinging along the road. With a pack on their back. And a song in the heart to ease the load.It is forty years or moreSince they crowded through that door. And they’ve coming along, as gay and strong. As ever they came before.

Chorus:

They are Guides, all Guides and in unexpected places. You’ll find their friendly faces, and a ready hand besides. And there’s not much danger of finding you’re a stranger. For Commissioners or Rangers they are Guides all Guides.

Who are these living beneath the sky. While the shimmering sun.The pattering rain, the clouds pass by.They will dine beneath the bows. And their leader always vows,That they’re never afraid of waspsAnd hardly ever afraid of cows.

Chorus:

Who are these sitting round the fire. They’ll be happy to have your company,If that is your desire. And the evening will be gay.At the sunset hour of the day. With a song to sing and a tale to tell,And many a tune to play.

Chorus:

Ancient Britons National Anthem

What’s the good of wearing brace’s,Vest and pants and boots with laces.Hats and spats you buy in places, down Brampton Road. What’s the good of shirts of cotton,Studs that always get forgotten. These affairs are simply rotten.Better far is woad.

Woads the stuff to show menWoad to scare your foe men.Ancient Britons never hit on,Anything as good as woad to fit on,Neck or knees or where you sit on.Tailors can be blowed.

Romans came across the channel,All dressed up in tin and flannel.Half a pint of woad per man will dress up more that these.Saxons you can waste your stitches,Building beds for boys with breeches. We have woad to clothe us,Which is not a nest for fleas.

Romans keep your armours,Saxons your pyjamas.Hairy coats were made for goats,Gorillas, yaks retriever dogs and llamas.March up Snowdon with your woad on,Never mind if you get rained or blowed on,Never need a button sewed onGo it Ancient Britons.
