Camp Cartwheel Pre-Reflection 1
Camp Cartwheel Pre-Reflection

1. In your own words, discuss what you think Camp Cartwheel is.
Camp Cartwheel is a wonderful experience in which many individuals
volunteer their time and resources to come together for the common goal
of providing children with life-threatening illnesses and their siblings an
opportunity to escape their diseases, disabilities, and worries to enjoy life
and engage in the most important occupation of play. This is an
opportunity for the children of a family to bond together by sharing a fun
experience away from their parents and the seriousness and heaviness of
the daily experiences of hospital stays and doctor visits. This is an
experience with the framework of providing a fun and fulfilling day within
the safe construct of doctors and medical professionals at hand. It also
provides the availability for children to engage in activities that are not
always available to the children. For instance, many children do not have
the resources to go kayaking but Camp Cartwheel allows the children to
do this safely.
2. What you hope to gain from the Camp Cartwheel experience
I hope to gain more experience working with children with and without
disabilities to engage in play. I am looking forward to learning ways to
engage children of all ages, diagnoses, and interests in activities that they
find to be meaningful and fun. Moreover, I am looking forward to working
with groups of children, as this is something I have very little experience

in. I hope to gain a day of fun and laughter in which the miracle of children
is fully celebrated and enjoyed. In addition, I hope to gain some
information about how organizations and foundations come together to
great events like this one. I want to engage in activities that are similar to
this one throughout life and I am very interested in creating events with
goals as pure and inspiring as this one. Any information on how these
events come together would be wonderful and beneficial to gain this from
experience.
3. How you see yourself fitting into the camp
I see myself fitting into the camp, although nervous from a lack of
confidence in working with children. I am very motivated, engaged, and
enthusiastic about this event and see myself opening up as the day
progresses. I see myself being a good advocate for the more shy children
and helping them to get engaged in the activities.
