WelcomeWelcome to Cambridge! It’s fantastic to haveyou with us and we hope your visit isinformative and enjoyable. The purpose of theOpen Days is to provide the opportunity foryou to find out more about the University, ourcourses and the Colleges, and to talk with staffand students.

With so much going on during the Open Days, wesuggest you look at the programme of activities inadvance or early in the day and make a plan so youcan make the most of your visit – to help you withthis we’ve left spaces by the session times so youcan mark which you want to go to or in what order.

Thank you for taking the time to visit us and wehope you have a great day. If you have anyquestions, please do not hesitate to ask a memberof staff or a student (who are wearing turquoiseCambridge Open Days t-shirts).

If you’re accompanying a prospective applicantPlease be aware that due to room capacity limits, forthe vast majority of sessions priority is given toprospective applicants. If seats are still available, ourstaff and student helpers will let you know.

There are some dedicated sessions for parents/carers/supporters, as well as an update for teachersand HE advisers (see p4). You may also like to take awalking tour (details available from the MainWelcome Desk, map location ) and/or visit oneof our museums or the Botanic Garden (see p10).

General information

Welcome DesksThe Main Welcome Desk at the Old Schools in thecity centre (map location ) is open between9.30am and 4.00pm each day. Staff are on hand toanswer queries and you can pick up copies ofvarious publications relating to the Open Days,undergraduate study at Cambridge, the University’sMusic Awards, student finance, and walking tourguides.

In addition, information stands and representativesfrom a range of other services are based here:

The DRC provides information and support toprospective and current students with a disability/specific learning difficulty/health condition.

Language CentreMap location Open: 9.00am – 5.00pm

Tours are available throughout the day. A full tourlasts approximately 20 minutes but visitors canjoin/leave a tour as time permits.

University LibraryMap location Open: 10.00am – 4.30pm

As well as an information stand, tours of theUniversity Library and its unique collections areavailable throughout the day. Each tour lastsapproximately 15 minutes, with the last tourcommencing at 4.15pm. Tour participants must be aged 16 or older.

University Sports CentreMap location Open: 6.30am – 10.00pm

The University’s new Sports Centre is open forvisitors to look around, and tours of the facilities areavailable throughout the day. Each tour lastsapproximately 15 minutes.

ADC TheatreMap location Open: 12.00pm – 5.00pm

Students are on hand to answer questions. Tours areavailable at 12.00pm, 1.00pm and 2.00pm. Each tourlasts approximately 30-40 minutes.

Prayer roomA prayer room is available on the Sidgwick Site.Please speak to staff at the Sidgwick Site WelcomeDesk (map location ) about access.

RefreshmentsRefreshments can be purchased on some Universitysites.

Trinity Street/King’s Paradeand the streets around the Market Square (MarketHill) are a good place to start. Please note that theUniversity of Cambridge accepts no liability for theproducts/services provided by these companies.

Colleges

What’s a College?Cambridge is a ‘collegiate’ university. This means thatit comprises various University faculties anddepartments in different academic subjects, and anumber of Colleges.

Your College is your base for the time you’re atCambridge. It’s where you live, eat, do a lot ofsocialising, receive academic and pastoral support,and where you often (though not always) have yoursupervisions. Students on the same course,regardless of their College, are taught together bythe academic faculties/departments, attending thesame lectures, seminars and practicals. There are noColleges that are ‘better’ for certain subjects.

Advice on how (and how not) to choose a College,along with an explanation of the key functions thatthe University (through the faculties/departments)

and Colleges are responsible for, can be found inthe Undergraduate Prospectus and on our website(www.cam.ac.uk/choosingacollege/).

Visiting CollegesThe Colleges are open for visitors to drop in at thetimes specified below (please check the openingtimes carefully as access is not possible at any othertime) – please follow the signs from the mainCollege entrance (see the map on p12-3 for Collegelocations).

Some Colleges have their own events taking placeduring 3 and 4 July that require separate booking(see individual College websites for details andbooking).

Many of these museums are open to the public throughout theyear – please find details below regarding those that are open during the Cambridge Open Days.

Getting around Cambridge

Most Open Days venues are within walking distanceof the city centre, but some Colleges anddepartments are a little further out. If you havesufficient time you may like to walk out to theseColleges/departments. Alternatively, you may wishto use one of the bus services (see below).

Walking toursFour walking tours are available – two around thecity centre and two to/from West Cambridge. Thetours vary in length (between 30 minutes and twohours) and you can pick these up from the MainWelcome Desk (map location ) and the WestCambridge Site Welcome Desk (map location ).

If it’s a nice day we particularly recommend the walkto West Cambridge (approximately 30 minutes eachway), which takes you past the University Libraryand Faculty of Mathematics, as well as a number ofthe Colleges.

BusesCambridge Open Days shuttle busWe are providing a free shuttle bus service betweenQueen’s Road (‘The Backs’) and the West CambridgeSite (JJ Thomson Avenue). There is also a stop nearStorey’s Way, for those who wish to visit the Facultyof Mathematics and/or the Colleges in this area(Churchill, Fitzwilliam, Lucy Cavendish, St Edmund’sand Murray Edwards).

The buses run between 9.30am and 4.45pm and wesuggest you allow around 40 minutes for a journey.There is limited seating on each bus but weanticipate a pick-up/set down from each of the threestops every 10-20 minutes (traffic depending).

The last pick-up from Queen’s Road (to WestCambridge) is at 4.00pm, and the last pick-up fromthe West Cambridge Site (to Queen’s Road) is at4.45pm. Please note that the West Cambridge Site isapproximately 10 minutes’ walk from the MadingleyRoad Park & Ride site.

City servicesThe Uni 4 and Citi 6 bus services (operated byStagecoach, www.stagecoachbus.com) link theColleges/departments with the city centre.Information and timetables are available from theMain Welcome Desk (map location ).

The train station is approximately 20 minutes’ walkfrom the city centre, or buses depart every 10-20minutes from Emmanuel Street.

If you use one of the Park & Ride services, you cancatch a bus back from the following city centre busstops to:

Cambridge is a small and busy city, not builtwith modern traffic flows in mind, and so it’sbest to travel into the city by public transport.

By carFor those driving to Cambridge, the roads in andaround the city centre can get congested andparking is very limited. Therefore, we recommendvisitors arriving by car use the Park & Ride servicesinto the city centre.

The Park & Ride sites are shown on the map (right).It is anticipated that the Park & Ride sites will bebusy on 3 and 4 July (particularly Madingley Roadand Trumpington). Therefore, allow plenty of timeto travel in case your intended Park & Ride site is fulland you have to continue to an alternative Park &Ride site.

Buses leave every 10 minutes and the journeynormally takes around 15 minutes, but it’s advisedto allow at least 30 minutes to travel into the citycentre. For more information, including timetablesand ticket prices see the website at:www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/parkandride/.

By trainCambridge train station is approximately 20 minutes’walk from the city centre. There are bus stops in frontof the main entrance and buses run every 10-20minutes to St Andrew’s Street in the city centre(returning to the station from Emmanuel Street).
