///////////////////////////CJF WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE 2nd Annual Cambridge Jazz Festival! We’re very pleased to be able to provide our community this day of great, FREE jazz that attracts such a diverse audi-ence of jazz lovers, while also raising funds to provide college scholarships for aspiring musicians in Cambridge through the Johnny Hodges Scholarship Fund. Today, we’ll also announce the winners of the 2015 ‘Cammy’ Awards, which gives recognition to individu-als who work to improve the lives of our young people.

Through this annual signature event, we are able to fulfill our mission: to entertain and inform the community about the uniquely American Art of jazz through exceptional live performances, and to provide inspiration and scholarships to young music students. We could not do this without the financial contributions and in-kind services we’ve re-ceived from our generous sponsors and individual donors; the leadership and strategic guidance of our Board and Honorary Board members; the enthusiastic involvement of City of Cambridge and the local business community; the many dedicated volunteers who’ve donated so much of their time; and, last but not least, Forest City, who has pro-vided the perfect venue - University Park Commons at M.I.T.

On behalf of our Board, I’m extending a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who has con-tributed to the success of this year’s festival and also to those of you who have come out to enjoy the performances today. If you like what you see (and hear) and want to make it possible for the Festival to become a permanent institution in the cultural life of our city, please visit www.cambridgejazzfestival.org to find out how you can get involved with a contribution that will help next year’s 3rd Annual Cambridge Jazz Festival to be an even more wonderful event.

RON SAVAGE & LARRY WARD, from their first two hour meeting that was supposed to last only 30 minutes, they knew they were destined to bring a jazz festival to Cambridge. They have combined Ron’s professional mu-sic experience and Larry’s organizing skills to co-produce the first Cambridge jazz fes-tival. They understand the importance and history of jazz and are on a journey to create a culture of jazz in Cambridge that is sustain-able beyond an annual jazz festival.

THE TÓTH BROTHERS\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Sometimes fans wonder how The Tóth Brothers came up with such an usual name for their band…well, that actually is their name, which comes from their Hungarian father…and from their Trini-dadian mother, they have inherited and appreciation for the distinctive sounds of the Caribbean. With Alexander a bass player and Anthony a drummer, they are unique in the jazz world – a rhythm section who are also brothers, and as such, are consequently able to fuse a seamless communication that produces a fresh and engaging musical sound.

Page 11: Cambridge Jazz Festival 2015 Program

///////////////////////EGUIE CASTRILLO

Grammy Award winner percussionist Eguie Castrillo has sizzled stages around the world with the infectious rhythm and electrifying perfor-mances of his mambo / latin jazz / salsa bands. His Mambo Mania Tour sold out New York’s Carnegie Hall.

An engaging showman, Eguie has performed and recorded with world music figures such as: Tito Puente, Donna Summer, Steve Winwood , KC and the Sunshine Band, Celia Cruz and Michael Brecker. He has toured extensively with the Arturo Sandoval Band, and also conducts music clinics and workshop tours around the world.

Eguie will be performing with his truly international “Latin Jazz Con-nection”, which features the new conga sensation Takafumi Nikaido from Japan, the outstanding young saxophonist Edmar Colón from Puerto Rico, the great bass player Flávio Lira from Brazil and the very talented and swingy pianist Santiago Bosch from Venezuela.

Page 12: Cambridge Jazz Festival 2015 Program

JOANNE BRACKEEN\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

JoAnne Brackeen, who’s become known as a ‘musical Picas-so’, has been called “a visionary of extraordinary depth” by Tony Bennett, and “a pianist-composer of phenomenal ca-pacity” by the legendary Bill Evans, is consistently ranked by critics as one of the best jazz pianists in the world.

Her writing is remarkable for its creativity, stylistic range, emotional depth, and whimsical spirit. Her playing is “vir-tuosic and wholly unpredictable, dense and richly detailed, rhythmically advanced and consistently, effortlessly swing-ing.”

She started out playing bebop in the 1950’s with the likes of Dexter Gordon and Charles Lloyd. In 1969 she ‘broke the glass ceiling’ as the first woman in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messen-gers, then played with Joe Henderson and Stan Getz before leading her own groups and touring around the world as a solo performer.

Joanne has recorded 25 albums as the lead performer and has truly arrived at the cutting edge of elegance and accom-plishment. She has often been described as the twenty-first century jazz genius. To witness her in performance is to be enchanted by the whole history and future of jazz.

Page 13: Cambridge Jazz Festival 2015 Program

//////////////////////LASZLO GARDONY

Laszlo Gardony, who originally studied at the Béla Bartók Conservatory in Budapest is a critically acclaimed artist who has brought his soulful improvisations and compositions to audiences in 24 countries and is a former first prize winner at the Great American Jazz Piano Competition,

Gardony has been featured with the Boston Pops, the Utah Symphony and The Smithsonian Institute’s “Beyond Category” Traveling Duke Ellington Exhibit, and performed with David “Fathead” Newman, Eddie Gomez’ Per and Ran-dy Brecker.

He has been praised by Dave Brubeck for his “fluid pianism” and by The New York Times for the “uniformly high quality of his compositions, harmonic complexity and emotional content”. Jazz Review has put him in “the highest pan-theon of performers” All About Jazz Magazine found him to be “on par with Bill Evans”.

More than a gifted improviser, Gardony is a cagey musical architect who understands that “shape is paramount. Without shape, regard-less of what you create in your solo piano play-ing, it’s not going to connect. The idea is to tran-scend the sense that here is a pianist and here is a listener. It’s more of a joint journey.”

Page 14: Cambridge Jazz Festival 2015 Program

THE HEADLINER FOR THE CAMBRIDGE JAZZ FESTIVAL, Cambridge native Nnenna Free-lon has performed with jazz legends Ray Charles, Ellis Marsalis, Al Jarreau, George Ben-son, Earl Klugh and Ramsey Lewis. She is winner of the Billie Holiday Award from the Academie du Jazz and the Eubie Blake Award from the Cultural Crossroads Center in New York, and has been nominated twice as “Lady of Soul” by the Soul Train Awards.

Nnenna has also dedicated herself to educating young people about jazz. She toured the US for four years as the National Spokesperson for Partners in Education. Her “One Child at a Time” (from her “Soulcall” album), which she wrote to bring greater attention to the needs of children’s education in the arts, has become an anthem for countless organiza-tions, including the United Way.

At the 43rd annual GRAMMY Awards telecast from Los Angeles, she inspired an enthusi-astic standing ovation from 20,000 music industry insiders and other celebrities when she took to the stage. She receives similar reaction for her ongoing concerts, television and special event performances such as the prestigious headline spot for ActionAID, Sir Elton John’s International AIDS fundraiser.

Recently, Nnenna triumphed in composer Laura Karpman’s undertaking of Langston Hughes’ “Ask Your Mama” at The Apollo Theater and at an astounding Hollywood Bowl concert with opera superstar Jessye Norman and the indie phenom band The Roots. She also wowed audiences at SRO shows at the Tanglewood Jazz Festival with the Duke El-lington inspired “Dreaming The Duke,” with classical star Harolyn Blackwell and pop-jazz-crossover pianist Mike Garson.
