    Dr Wong Yoke Chen

Amat Victoria Curam, a Latin phrase that means victory avours those who take pains, is a motto that I holdtrue and believe in wholeheartedly.

In todays society where instant grati cation and increasing simpli cation are popular, a programme like theA-Levels that employs traditional teaching and learning methods stands out as an anachronism, a conceptthat seems out o place in modern times. Yes, we stick to old values emphasising the depth and breadth o subjects taught and creating a rm bedrock o undamental knowledge that underlies a worthwhile pre-university preparation. I would be the rst to admit that the A-Level programme can o ten prove to be verychallenging or the less industrious and resolute students.

But any place worth going to deserves the sincere e ort put in. Despite its reputation as the toughest pre-university course, our graduates have no regrets and will testi y that the pains taken have been worth it. Istrongly advocate that ones achievement o a goal is measured by the quality o the endeavour taken toaccomplish it. There are no shortcuts to true success.

Here at Sunway University College, my team o highly experienced and dedicated lecturers aims to deliverthe best A-Level education possible. With the right coaching, seemingly insurmountable intellectual conceptsare made comprehensible. The emphasis is on making the learning experience enjoyable, memorable andultimately enriching.

Having kept an un altering track record o stellar A-Level results or the past many years, I believe that our A-Level academic team has and will continue to provide an exceptional educational experience or our students.I believe also that education goes beyond the mere acquisition o paper quali cations. The pastoral careprogramme through our mentor-mentee system which we have been success ully implementing over thepast 13 years speaks volumes o our personal concern or each and every student. Various activities provide theavenue or our students to develop more than just their academic abilities. We encourage their creative talentsand also cultivate leadership, social and communication skills as well as guide them in time managementexpertise.

To the Sunway A-Level team, education in its original Latin meaning o e-ducere or to lead out is aconcept that transcends mere paper grades. We aim to develop and to lead out the inherent talents, skills andcharacter that are latent in our students. We believe in human potential, and that everyone slow and astlearners alike deserves an opportunity to be educated, to have his or her best traits developed.

CIE is one o the worlds leading providers o international academic quali cations and is a part o theUniversity o Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES). This renowned body has been developingand promoting its uniquely Brit ish system o assessment around the world or almost 150 years.

The GCE A-Level quali cation places emphasis on in-depth knowledge, deep understanding, strong reasoningabilities and critical thinking. It is arguably the most widely recognised pre-university quali cation in theworld, readily accepted as proo o superior academic ability or entry into world-class universities around theworld.

CIE is the worlds largest provider o international educational quali cations with more than 1100 examinationcentres across the globe. Fi ty-odd such centres are currently operating in Malaysia alone. Any centre whichproves its worth through a superior delivery system that produces excellent results in the twice-yearly

examinations is accorded the status o a Fellowship Centre. Only 4 centres in Malaysia have attained this elitestatus and Sunway is one o them!

    University o CambridgeInternational Fellowship Centre

The Fellowship Centre status awarded by CIE to our A-Level programme in 2005 is a clear recognition o ourexcellent delivery system and ensuing top-notch results on a world stage. We have a consistent track recordo outstanding academic per ormance and a string o international awards won by our students.

In the June 2009 CIE Examinations, our overall pass rate was 98.8% with 26% o our students achieving threeA-grades or more. In that assessment, our students topped the nation in Accounting, Biology and Law, whilein Physics and Psychology, we produced the worlds best! Such sterling per ormances are nothing new recipients o CIE Top Student awards have been regularly emerging rom within our ranks since 1998. The CIE A-Level curriculum provides a rm bedrock o undamental knowledge by guaranteeing comprehensive

coverage in the breadth and depth o each subject o ered. Students are assessed or their mastery o subject

matter, their application o knowledge and understanding to everyday scenarios and their ability to think critically

in un amiliar situations. In the Sciences, a air part o the assessment involves the demonstration o laboratory-based skills. Coursework and internal examinations serve the sole purpose o preparing students or the nal

external assessment which comes direct rom CIE.

The programme o A-Level studies at Sunway involves a two-tiered structure o examinations leading to the

award o a certi cate. The staged assessment relieves the pressure associated with sitting or one set o nal

examination papers. The AS (Advanced Subsidiary) Examination tests undamental skills while the A2 (Advanced

Level) Examination is a more wide-ranging assessment. Our 1.5-year programme comprises three semesters, eachabout six months long, with the AS examinations at the end o Semester 2 and the A2 examinations at the endo Semester 3.

Help and SupportSta rom the A-Level programme and the Student ServicesDepartment o er assistance to students in the areas o academic and personal counselling. At the programmelevel, each student is assigned an academic sta member asmentor.

Mentor-Mentee SystemEach lecturer in our A-Level programme is assigned a numbero mentees who become recipients o pastoral care throughouttheir studies. At the outset, this system osters the orging o meaning ul relationships between lecturers and students, and promotes the close monitoring o students overallprogress. The system also identi es each mentor as a capableand ready resource person or counsel pertaining to choiceo career and placement in appropriate universities. Mentorsare responsible or processing all applications made by their

mentees, including the writing o re erences and testimonials. On a broader level, the mentor-mentee system helps guidethe overall social, emotional and mental development o thestudent body.

Parents DayParents Day is held every semester to enable parents andguardians to meet with lecturers and discuss academic andpersonal development o each student. This will enableparents / guardians and lecturers to work together to helpthe student develop his / her ull potential.

Progress ReportsProgress reports are evaluative reports written by eachsubject lecturer. These reports are an important meanso letting parents know about the students progress. Theprogramme regards parental involvement and home supportas critical actors in helping students improve. Two reportsare sent in the rst semester and one a ter each o the mock examinations.

Extracurricular Activities There are many extracurricular activities available to all studentsin the institution under the Student Services Department.Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricularactivity as it provides a more wholesome development o thestudent. It may also enhance a re erence or testimonial.

A-Level Student Council(ALSCO)ALSCO is a group o committed, bright and creative youngpeople who are the voice o the A-Level students. Each classis represented by a member o the ALSCO.

Among the events that ALSCO has organised are the A-LevelBall, traditional costume day, Sports Carnival and charityevents to raise unds or the less ortunate and needy. Beingin the ALSCO teaches members to be more tolerant andunderstanding o di erent races, creeds and colour. Memberso ALSCO also learn to come out o their com ort zone andachieve their ull potential o being leaders. ALSCO membersstrive to be role models and set good examples or their ellowcourse mates.

For the selection process, applicants are required to llup a orm about their previous extracurricular activities insecondary school. A ter that, an existing ALSCO member will

interview the applicants personally be ore the applicantsare shortlisted to be interviewed by the A-Level Director, the advisor to ALSCO. Committee meetings are held weeklyto discuss and plan events or social gatherings. I you areresponsible, committed and prepared to be a leader, ALSCOwants you!

Student AttendanceAlthough attendance is not part o the evaluation process inthe A-Level programme there is a high correlation betweenattendance and achievement and it is likely that a studentwho has a high degree o absenteeism will be doing poorly.

Attendance is a priority and is monitored and recordeddiligently. Students who miss ve or more classes will bereported to the Director o Programme and parents orguardians will be in ormed. Persistent absence rom classmay result in the student being excluded rom classes unlessapproved by the Director o Programme.

Student PunctualityLateness is not only disruptive to others but also adverselya ects e ective class participation. Chronic lateness will betreated similarly to requent absences and will be refected

in the students nal mark. It is within the subject teachersprerogative to deny access to class to chronic latecomers andtreat the denied access as an absence.

I a student knows he / she will be absent or lessons, he / she mustproduce a parents letter to state the reasons and proposedabsenteeism dates in advance o the leave o absence.

Academic CounsellingI a student is ound to be too ar behind in the syllabus andunable to catch up due to lack o attitude / aptitude then he / she is to be counselled to drop the subject.

I two or more lecturers agree he / she lacks the ability to cope,a ter the mid-semester report, he / she will be counselled tochange programme as appropriate.
