with family. For my family, there was always excitement and happiness at getting to see everyone. Good food and conversation are always present and lots of it. A recliner nap is usually worked in there (of course that was before four kids). What is not to love about a day like that? The circumstances create joy! But does that joy carry on through the rest of the year?

One of the most life altering emotions is joy. It certainly is an emotion that can affect everything and everyone around us. Simply being in the presence of a person who has joy can change your demeanor and attitude almost instantly. We would all like to be that person. Right?

Yet with all of that said, joy is one of the most elusive emotions. We often struggle to have joy. Life takes over, and struggles happen and in the midst of them it is difficult to cultivate joy within our lives, much less to transfer it into the lives of others.

So how do we have joy? The Bible tells us that joy is a fruit of the Spirit. It is listed there in Galatians 5:22-23 along with love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control. These serving as the evidence of the Spirit's work within our hearts. So in other words, joy is produced as the Spirit transforms our hearts into the image of Christ. their joy. They assume that having their wants and desires, or more of something, maybe the right job, or the right connections will lead to joy. So they are always seeking to change their circumstances so that they might have joy. This becomes and endless cycle that never leads to the desired outcome. Yet when we realizethat in Christ we have forgiveness, and that we have been given a hope that will endure, there is a joy that comes with it.

When the Spirit is given freedom to work within our lives, then joy becomes a reality no matter our circumstances. In Acts 5, the Apostles are arrested for teaching in the name of Jesus, even after they had been commanded to stop. After questioning, they were beaten and released. The Scripture says that they went away rejoicing because they had been counted worthy to suffer for the name of Christ. There is joy! It certainly was not dependent on their circumstances be-cause they had just been beaten. Their joy flowed from something much deeper, and was the result of a transformed life which in turn had transformed priorities. This then means that we can have joy even in the worst struggle that we have ever faced. Because joy comes from God. I pray that this year you will have joy that flows from your Heavenly Father.

For many households, the anticipation of Thanksgiving begins with the official beginning of Fall. In our home, the annual traditions of candle lighting and deco-rating have already begun. In fact, both of our youngest boys have already asked when we can begin reading “Pilgrim Stories” by Margaret Pumprey, published in 1910. This is something we’ve done with the children for nearly twenty years and something every one of us enjoys.

The Christian quality of thankfulness extends far beyond our culture’s one-day celebration in November. For every follower of Christ, the knowledge that God is our provider, sustainer and savior provides the daily motivation to offer ourselves to Him as living sacrifices. On November 17, our combined children’s choirs will sing “Grateful Praise” - a modern setting of the hymn, “For the Beauty of the Earth”. This hymn, based on Ephesians 5:20, reminds us all of the rich blessings we possess because of the loving provision of our heavenly Father in sending Christ to bear our sins on the cross. I hope you’ll take time daily to remember the Lord’s kindness and let this act of love motivate your response to Him.

I played basketball in junior high, and our team was not very good. In fact, when I was in the eighth grade, we got beat by Mooreville 42 to 2. The amazing thing (and embarrassing thing) about that game is that I was our team’s leading scor-ing…with four points. Yep, you guessed it. I scored on the wrong goal. The play-ers on the other team were so much bigger than us that we could never get a rebound, so they just kept shooting until they made it. So when I—the shortest player on our team by about three feet—somehow came up with a rebound, I just shot it. It just…felt right.

In the book of Judges we watch the Israelites go through the “sin cycle,” moving from obedience to disobedience, then to God giving them over to their enemies, later to them crying out for God to save them, and finally to God saving them. But then the cycle simply begins anew. Near the end of Judges, we see three occa-sions where a disturbing phrase is repeated: “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did whatever seemed right to him.”

This seems to be the prevailing philosophy today. “Do what makes you happy.” But this is not a great statement by which to live, especially as a follower of Jesus. Instead, our lives should be centered on bringing God glory by living lives set apart for Him. The danger in doing simply what feels “right” is much greater than two points for the other team. Press on in faithfulness, friends!
