WEEKLY NEWSLETTER AUGUST 5, 2020

During an online Bible study back in June, I asked the question, “Where do you place yourself in scripture?” “Who do you identify with?”

Sometimes we might think of the characters of the Bible as heroes, people we admire but couldn’t possibly emulate. We may feel like they are too far removed from the modern day

world or, more so, that they were just too faithful and courageous for us to possibly be able to live up to them.

On the contrary, the Bible is full of characters, family dynamics, etc. that are so true to life as to be uncanny, and it even contains scenes that would have been heard by its original readers as laugh-out-loud funny.

Does that sound like the Bible you know? Possibly not. Many people find the Bible to be boring, out-of-reach, etc. To be sure, it is a very large and complex book. Where humor and true-to-life were written into its pages and stories, it often goes undetected for modern day Americans, and it’s totally understandable. When there is such distance between language and culture — biblical times vs. modern day — it is pretty much impossible for translators to help it come through in the same way as it would have for the original readers. In some cases, translators bring an overly serious bias to their work.

That doesn’t mean that it can’t be explored and somewhat appreciated, however. So, for our next sermon series, I thought it was time for something lighter. June Hare

34 Aronimink Dr. Newark, DE 19711

June and her husband, Norman, have been members of Calvary for many years. June was always very

active in earlier years serving as head of the Clothes Closet, working on the Fellowship Committee, and a

big part of the Women’s Group. These past few years have been a decline in her health, but she has been

able to attend services with her family on occasion. She enjoys visits and cards and appreciates still

being part of the Calvary family. Norman and June are currently living with their granddaughter at the

above address and can receive mail there.
