The campus of CalUMS San Diego is strategically located a little north of San Diego City, California. San Diego offers a variety of choices for accommodations, activities, and cultural attractions.

Modern and historic buildings stand side-by-side in the downtown historic Gaslamp District including housing shops, boutiques and fine dining restaurants. Cultural, sports and recreational attractions include The New Children’s Museum, Petco Park (home of the San Diego Padres), Balboa Park and of course the San Diego Zoo. Along the coastline from Del Mar to Oceanside, San Diego is known for its pristine beaches and natural preserves, not to mention the stretch of awesome seaside villages. CalUMS San Diego is a small student-centered campus in keeping with the University’s commitment to deliver high quality education to the community. CalUMS SD offers demand-driven educational programs including MBA, master’s degree in computer information systems, bachelor degree in business management, associate degree in paralegal studies, and ESL. Each of these programs are not only affordable but of quality standards at par with leading colleges and universities in California. San Diego is the second largest city in California and the ninth largest in the United States, with a population of nearly 1.3 million residents. The region boasts 70 miles of pristine beaches and an array of world-class family attractions, including the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, SeaWorld and Legoland.

The renowned zoo is just one small part of Balboa Park, an urban expanse that houses numerous museums, art galleries, beautiful gardens and the Tony Award-winning Old Globe Theatres. Petco Park is home to baseball’s San Diego Padres, while Qualcomm Stadium houses the NFL’s San Diego Chargers.

The Mission Bay Aquatic Center is the world’s largest recreational waterfront facility, offering instruction in an array of water sports, including sailing, surfing and kayaking. The center is designed primarily for the students, faculty, staff and alumni of San Diego’s colleges and universities.

Life in San Diego is culturally influenced by both American and Mexican norms mainly because of its geographic location. Also, this city has a long-time association with the U.S. armed forces given the expanse of its military infrastructures. Nevertheless, cliché or not, the city of San Diego has always been thought of by many as best for its ‘laid-back’ lifestyle as compared to the other popular and perhaps busier California cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Of course one’s perspective on such stereo-type description of the city shall only reach endless arguments, but the truth remains: San Diego is by far one of the best places to live in. For one thing, it’s a contrast from the hurly-burly morning rush off the city streets, and it’s a breath of fresher and smog-less air even from downtown or its suburbs. The business districts manage to depict a much composed and more relaxed pace amidst apparent stressors emanating from overextending corporate bigwigs within or outside the metropolis. A non-San Diegan can readily notice a different tone of voice, formal or casual, among those who were born and raised in the city thus exuding a distinct cultural taste.

The city of San Diego approximates a well-balanced access to the primal amenities of healthy living and maybe relatively progressive depending on one’s philosophical bend. It’s the excellent choice especially for those who may have opted to do a paradigm shift from the fast-lane-wrinkle-burdened 9-to-5 route to something better, something personal, and something

worthwhile.

MASTER DEGREE PROGRAMSAdmissions Requirements

An applicant to the Master’s degree programs must possess appropriate bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale).

Applicants for Master of Business Administration (M.B.A) must provide proof that they have completed a bachelor’s degree in a business related area such as business administration, economics, or international business from a recognized school. Those applicants who have not completed their bachelor’s degrees in a business related area are required to meet the prerequisite courses.

Applicants for Master of Science in Computer Information Systems (M.S.C.I.S.) must provide proof that they have completed a bachelor’s degree in a computer information related area such as computer engineering or information systems from a recognized school. Those applicants who have not completed their bachelor’s degrees in these areas are required to meet the prerequisite courses.

Admission ProceduresAn applicant to the Master’s programs must observe the following procedures:

1. Submit a completed Application Form with a non-refundable $100 application fee.2. Submit a copy of bachelor’s degree diploma3. Submit an official transcript directly to the Office of Admissions.4. Submit one (1) letter of recommendation.5. Submit proof of English language proficiency, if applicable.

E.S.L. (ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE)Admissions Requirements

An applicant to the ESL must have completed at least a high school education. This program is not offered to Ability-To-Benefit (ATB) students.

Admissions Procedures

An applicant to the Undergraduate Programs must observe the following admission procedures:1. Submit a completed Application Form with a non-refundable $100 application fee. 2. Submit a copy of a high school diploma and its corresponding high school official transcript or an official

transcript from a former college/ university attended directly to the Office of Admissions.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

In addition to the admission requirements and procedures, international students must submit the following documents and fees:

1. Except for ESL applicants, TOEFL score, taken not more than 2 years from the date of application, of at least 45 iBT or its equivalent for Undergraduate Programs (Associate and Bachelor’s Degree Levels), and 61 iBT or its equivalent for Master’s Programs. Applicants who do not meet these requirements must take the CalUMS English Proficiency Assessment Test (EPAT) and obtain a passing score. Those who did not obtain passing scores shall be required to register and attend the English Language Development (ELD) class until they achieve adequate proficiency in the English language.

2. International students who have either: (a) earned a U.S. high school diploma, or (b) completed at least one year of higher education in the U.S. in which English was the major language of instruction, are exempted from the TOEFL score requirement.

3. Except for ESL applicants, foreign transcript evaluation of official transcript/s recognized and approved by CalUMS. Foreign Transcript Evaluation Fee of $100 (non-refundable) for general evaluation, or $200 (non-refundable) for course-by-course evaluation. International students who earned their education outside the United States must be graduates of institutions recognized by their government and their transcript/s must be translated into English and evaluated by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) to determine its U.S. education equivalency.

4. Financial Statement that shows adequate fund to support tuition and fees for completion of the program.5. Photocopy of Passport (photo with date of birth)6. Mailing fee (non-refundable) amount depending on the student’s country of origin. This fee is required

for international students being issued new I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility) only. It is not required for F-1 transfer-in students or students with existing I-20s from other originating schools.

Program Objectives

Managers and non-managers alike depend upon information for decision-making. To be useful, that information must be understandable, timely, thorough, focused, and distributed to the appropriate individual. Accomplishing all these is the challenge of the Information Systems discipline. In this Program, students acquire professional skills in the areas of computer systems, networks, communications, data analysis, and other skills needed by this expanding field of technology.

• To enhance the students’ acquired knowledge on major organizational functions which support computer information systems.

• To empower the students in becoming proficient in the communication, human relations, and management skills which are critical to successful technology implementation and evaluation.

• To provide students with an acquired mastery of basic and advanced information systems approaches, methods and techniques, and their applications in a broad variety of organizational settings.

Program Objectives

The purpose of the Bachelor of Science in Business Management (B.S.B.M.) program is to provide students with an understanding of the challenges, concerns, and responsibilities that they will experience in the business world. This is accomplished through: (1) academic courses which cover the functional areas of business; and, (2) infusion of current trends and technologies into business management courses as part of the students’ learning process.

• Graduates will have an intimate knowledge of, and practical skills in, modern techniques of management practice that can be implemented in organizations so that those graduates may step into positions of responsibility in any organizational setting.

• Graduates will have a clear understanding of ethical and behavioral concerns that managers face in the workplace to encourage respect for the individual and the environment.

• Graduates will acquire hands-on experience in using a computer as an analytical and managerial tool.

The Associate of Science in Paralegal Studies (A.S.P.S.) program is designed for students who want to become effective paralegals with an emphasis on real-world applications.Specifically, this program aims to:

The ESL program is offered to students whose native language is not English, and explores the English language as it

is used in the United States of America. The course is divided into three (3) levels in the order of student proficiency

and progression: Level 1 (Basic), Level 2 (Intermediate), and Level 3 (Advanced).

At the first class period, an assessment test is given to evaluate the proficiency and range of skill of the students. The

focus of the class is then based on the language needs of the students, such as reading comprehension and listening

comprehension, as well as idioms, street terms, and phrases that are used frequently in general conversation.

The full course of study is six quarters, two quarters at each level. Students who achieve the higher level through

testing will require less time. Since ESL is a non-degree program, students do not need to complete the full course

of study to move on to university level work. All students are given a final TOEFL examination at the end of each

quarter to evaluate their progress.

ES 100 Level 1 (Basic)

This course is designed for the student who is a non-native speaker of English. It explores the English

Language as it is used in America through multi-media and field trips, as well as class work. The introductory

level covers basic grammar and structure of conversational English. The focus is on pronunciation of words

and the introduction of useful terms and concepts such as greetings, time, and dates. Various materials are

used including audio tapes, videos, cartoons, and newspapers. Small classes insure access to assistance

and the opportunity to progress individually.

ES 200 Level 2 (Intermediate)

This course is designed for the student who is a non-native speaker of English, but has some command of

the language. This level of study increases the student’s knowledge through field trips and the media, as

well as reading, writing, and conversation. The focus of Level 2 is on structural patterns, vocabulary building

(including “street talk”), and intermediate complex sentences. Students are encouraged to experience only

English during class as current events and cross-culture issues are explored. Various teaching materials are

used such as: videos, newspaper, audio tapes, and computer programs.

ES 300 Level 3 (Advanced)

This course is designed for the student who is a non-native speaker of English that has moderate command

of the language but wants to increase communications skills and articulation. This level of study brings the

student into the areas of business, politics, and current world events. The student’s knowledge and skill is

expanded through conversation, reading, and writing. Small classes afford the student the opportunity to

explore cross culture issues, to promote understanding, and to increase fluency through field excursions

and interactive exercises.
