MARCH 2015

March is finally here and Spring has nearly sprung so we have a spring cleaning theme to this issue.

Whether you are decluttering your house, or your mind, re-decorating there’s plenty of articles in this issue – there is even an article on hiring a cleaner if you don’t want to do it yourself! We look at the bathroom in this month’s room feature.

The Easter holidays also offer an opportunity to try a new activity – how about tennis, bowls, art classes, sewing, swimming, microlighting and golf – all advertised in your Town Crier this month.

Many thanks to you all for sending in ideas to the magazine – please keep them coming! Finally don’t forget Mum on Mother’s Day on the 15th March.Until next time ...

John Laverick & guests aboard Scathtan at the Melksham River Festival.

Chance to Steam Away in a Miniature Titanic! One of the many star lots at a Charity Auction, to be held in March, is the exciting opportunity to have a hands-on experience on-board the steam launch Scathtan. Scathtan is a genuine coal-fired steam launch, powered by a miniature steam engine of the type used on Titanic. Her owner, John Laverick, is Vice President of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust which is organising the auction in aid of the restoration projects on the canal.

He said: “After five years, Scathtan was back in steam for the Melksham River Festival last September, where, with several other steam launches, she put on a great show on the river.

“The successful bidder will enjoy a trip for up to four adults on a local waterway, when they will have the chance to fire and drive the engine; a truly memorable experience as the number of operational steam launches is dwindling. I hope that Scathtan will prove to be a popular lot at the auction.”

He added: “Despite the link with Titanic, I would like to assure people that I can guarantee an iceberg-free voyage!”

There will be free entry to the auction, which is being held at 7pm at The Angel Hotel Chippenham on

Thursday 26th March.

• Days out • Experiences • Unique Items • Easter hampers

The event will be hosted by entertaining auctioneer Gordon Brockman of Chippenham Auction Rooms.

Jeff Daws, auction organiser said: “Businesses, attractions and individuals have all been incredibly generous with donations, and we hope that this will make it an exciting evening, as well as a profitable one for the Trust.

“Lots include many vouchers for special experiences, including two adult weekend passes to the Village Pump Festival, tickets to the Yeovilton Air Day, four tickets for Chippenham Beer Festival, a family canoeing session, clay pigeon shooting, and tickets for the SS Great Britain. A half day charter for up to 12 people on the Trust’s narrowboat Dragonfly is another waterborne experience.

“Actual items for auction include original watercolours from local artists, a bag of logs, a bouquet of flowers, hampers, wine, painted canalware, and musical instruments, including a valuable alto saxophone: Amati Kraslice AA522.

“We hope people will find plenty of items to tempt themselves, their friends and families; we would like to invite everyone to come along, enjoy the fun of an auction, and get hold of some bargains in the process.“New donations are coming in all the time, so please visit our website: www.melkshamwaterway.org.uk for an up to date list of lots.”

Bids can be taken in advance for those unable to attend. Call 01373 859207 or email [email protected]

The aim of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is to restore the former waterway from the Kennet & Avon Canal near Melksham to the Thames & Severn Canal near Cricklade and the River Thames near Abingdon.

Significant stretches have already been restored near Lacock, Dauntsey, Royal Wootton Bassett and Swindon, as well as in Calne.

Safety reminder about domestic appliancesWiltshire Fire & Rescue Service is reminding people to take care when using domestic appliances.

Letting tumble driers, washing machines or dishwashers run unattended, either overnight or while you’re out of the house, can be dangerous, as fires can easily start if a fault develops and the appliance overheats.

Earlier this year, a family from the Chippenham area had a lucky escape when their tumble drier caught fire after being left to run overnight.

Domestic appliances are often kept downstairs in a house, so leaving them running when you go to bed creates a real risk that you could be trapped upstairs if a fire were to start. It is also vital to have working smoke detectors, and to test them every week – that way, if the worst does happen, you should be able to raise the alarm and get to safety

The Fire & Rescue Service’s advice is:

• Make sure there is at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home;

• Fit smoke alarms on landings, in hallways, and near bedrooms. They can also be beneficial in rooms with electric heaters or other items of potential risk;

• Test your smoke alarms regularly by pushing the button – ideally on a weekly basis;

• Check that your smoke alarms are no more than ten years old, and replace if necessary; and

• Make sure that any elderly or vulnerable relatives or neighbours also have working smoke alarms.

In addition, the Service recommends having carbon monoxide alarms fitted in your home, and these should also be checked regularly.

To see if you qualify for a free home fire safety check from Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service, call 0800 389 7849 or visit www.wiltsfire.gov.uk

Home-Start Kennet is coming to West WiltshireWe all lead such busy lives. Yet Home-Start Kennet is asking if anyone, experienced from raising their own children, can find a couple of hours a week to visit and support local families who are struggling. Your two hours could make the difference between just about coping and discovering the joys of parenting.

Our volunteers come from all parts of the community, are men and women, and their ages range from 20s to 70s. Some are winding down after busy lives at work or with their own families. Others are gearing up and hope to use their experience to start a new career.

We have been established in Kennet for 27 years and currently have BIG Lottery funding. We are hoping to expand into West Wiltshire through our new funding bids. We are eager to meet local people who will enjoy the satisfaction and challenge of working with a young family and help them to give their children the best childhood possible.

You'll get training, and professional support. For those who wish, there is the opportunity of national accreditation. For more information please visit our website: www.homestartkennet.co.uk or phone 01672 569457.

The Wiltshire Addiction Support Project is a peer led organisation. Everyone who works for us, either as a volunteer or in paid employment, has a life experience regarding drug and/or alcohol addiction.

Our organisation was started around twelve years ago and has grown exponentially during that time. We currently have around 121 members who are seeking support with their recovery or are now supporting others as well as over 30 carers who have sought out support to help them with their loved ones.

For the family members and friends of someone whose life has become chaotic due to their substance misuse life can be difficult on so many levels. Individuals can become isolated, not know who to talk to, not want to seek support for themselves because they feel ashamed or to blame for what has happened to their parent, sibling, child or friend. They can also feel that if they ask for help they are admitting that something is wrong and the stigma that can run alongside coping with an addict can be overwhelming – this is where WASP comes in.

Our Carer Involvement Coordinator, Sarah, has experience of dealing with a sibling with an alcohol problem that lasted over 20 years and says “at the time we

didn’t know who to talk to, we just wanted Andy to be helped and didn’t discuss it with anyone we knew. I never spoke to my GP, friends or often family – Andy’s addiction became the elephant in the room that no one dared to mention.” This was fourteen years ago, and today there is so much more support around for carers and WASP is just a phone call or email away.

We can provide one to one support over the telephone, in person or by email; we also have a Facebook page that contains the latest information about us. We can also refer people on to other support facilities who can provide free counselling and group support throughout Wiltshire so give us a call.

If you feel that we could be of any help to you please call our office on 01225 775558 or email our admin email on [email protected]

Vegetable ChowderThis vegetable chowder is adapted from an American recipe. In the U.S. they use cups for measuring. It’s quite a liberating way to cook. Don’t worry if you don’t have a proper set of measuring cups. Simply use any large cup or mug. The proportions will stay the same, you’ll simply have slightly more or less broth!

Preparation time: 30 minutesCooking time: 25 minutesServes 2 (approximately)

Ingredients1/2 cup chopped red or green pepper1/2 cup chopped onions1/4 cup butter or margarine1 cup chopped celery1 cup diced cauliflower1 cup diced carrot1 cup diced broccoli3 cups fresh chicken stockSalt to tasteGround black pepper to taste1/2 cup plain flour1-2 cups milk1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley3 cups grated cheddar cheese

MethodSauté the peppers and onions in butter until tender. Add remaining vegetables, stock, salt and black pepper; bring to a boil. Reduce heat: simmer covered for 20 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Combine flour and milk until smooth; stir into pan. Bring soup to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes. Mix in the parsley. Just before serving, stir in the cheese until melted.

Flowers and Mother’s Day

By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

MOTHER’S DAY began in 1908 after an American lady,

Ann Jarvis, asked the local church if they would set aside a day to commemorate her mother’s death. From this grew the idea to create a holiday on which all mothers – alive or dead – could be remembered, parents respected, and family bonds strengthened.

Ann started a campaign to have Mother’s Day recognised as a holiday. In 1914 she succeeded when US President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day, celebrated in May, an annual holiday. The practice has spread throughout the world!

During her campaign, Ann posted or handed out white carnations, and this flower became a symbol for the day. Mothers would wear a white carnation if their mother was dead, and a coloured one if she was still living.

In the UK, Mother’s Day is celebrated in March on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Traditionally, this was a time when all family members were granted time off work and could gather together to worship. The day became known as Mothering Sunday – or Rose Sunday – because roses were handed out to all women present at church.

Flowers symbolise purity, beauty and life – all attributes possessed by mothers - and gradually the tradition of giving flowers grew. But above all, flowers are given because our mothers like them!

2015 marks the 16th National Salt Awareness Week. Research tells us that a high dietary salt intake is associated with the development of high blood pressure, and an increased risk of stroke and coronary heart disease. Note the word ‘high’ in the previous statement. Average salt consumption in this country is about 8.5g per person per day. This is about one and a quarter teaspoons. I know this because I measured it out and believe me, it doesn’t look a lot. So why all the fuss about reducing our intake by what amounts to just about half a teaspoon?

Salt is composed of 40 percent Sodium and 60 percent Chloride. We need Sodium because it regulates water in the body, and helps in the transfer of electrical impulses along our nerve fibre system. But just 1g of salt per day would be sufficient to carry out all these functions. At 950 percent of the required daily amount 9.5g does seem suddenly like a very big number.

Salt raises the blood pressure because Sodium encourages the body to retain more water. This increased volume of water in the blood vessels creates higher pressure. Once you have high blood pressure you are more likely to develop heart disease, which is one of the leading killers in Britain today.

So, is it just a matter of leaving the salt cellar in the cupboard when we lay the table? Well no: about 75 percent of salt is hidden in processed foods. Brits eat more crisps than the rest of Europe combined, and with each packet, up to 1g of salt!

Processed meats, cheese, cereals, bread and ready meals are also high in salt. That’s the bad news – so what can we do about it?

Well, we can read the labels and choose foods with the lowest amount of salt. Studies have shown that by reducing our salt intake along with saturated fat, and by increasing our intake of fruit, vegetables and low fat dairy foods like yoghurt, we can reduce our blood pressure. Ideally, this should be

combined with maintaining a healthy weight, limiting our alcohol consumption, and increasing our physical activity levels.

It sounds straightforward, but in reality we all need a little push sometimes. Why not take advantage of a health MOT at your local Fitness club or Health Spa. Most have facilities for measuring blood pressure and body fat, and many have staff qualified to advise on nutrition. You might be inspired to change your lifestyle. Who’d have imagined that reducing salt intake by just half a teaspoon per day would reap such big rewards. Now that’s got to be food for thought . . .just don’t add salt!

by Debbie Singh-Bhatti

WHEN my brother was in his late teens he would go to bed at night with a maths text book

under his arm, which he would study avidly until the early hours of the morning. His unusual choice of bedtime reading reflected his passion for a subject he would later study at University, and use to launch his career.

Imagine my surprise then, when he confided in me recently that he hadn’t looked at a maths book for years, and that he didn’t intend to do so in the future. There was no hint of regret – instead he seemed accepting of the fact that his love affair with maths was over, and that now was the time to do something different.

Many of us give our homes a good clean and clear out at least once a year, but what we may not realise is that our own lives need a periodic clear out too, to get rid of damaging spiritual or emotional clutter that might cause us stress or unhappiness, and prevent us from making the most of our lives.

Clutter is anything that we no longer have a use for, that we no longer like or love, or that has become totally disorganised. Because our lives are constantly changing, new experiences, interests, people and ideas may enter whilst others may leave.

To make room for the new things, it’s important to have an occasional clear out of the old that we no longer have a use for.

We all experience negative feelings from time to time – possibly feelings of low self-esteem, failure, sadness, loneliness or worry that could be associated with events from our past. If we don’t deal with these feelings they could fester and grow, and become destructive to our wellbeing and our ability to move forward. We must get rid of useless emotional clutter that won’t make room for happy thoughts and feelings.

Think back over the past year or two. Identify the most painful experience you’ve had. What was the event or mistake that led to it? When you think of this today, what feelings does it trigger in you? If the memory still evokes negative emotions get rid of them, by first acknowledging that this thing happened, forgive yourself for any part you played in the event, and finally release it from your heart and your mind.

In ridding ourselves of our emotional clutter, no matter how hard this may seem, the outcome is usually bright. We enjoy more energy, a renewed enthusiasm and zest for life, clearer priorities, and a better understanding of ourselves, and what is important to us as we move on to the next stage of our lives.

Banish Emotional Clutter!

WELL isn’t Spring a sight for sore eyes? We’re lucky to be living in this part of the country which is

lush and green and a rainbow of colours this time of year. I have three cherry trees in my garden and can’t wait for them to come into blossom; it really brings an energy to the garden which is lost over the winter. I’m a bit of a lazy gardener so I need the encouragement to start getting my little patch ready for summer. I do find it tricky getting motivated in the darker months, my garden gets neglected and it’s so kind that Mother Nature brings things into bloom to draw me out of hibernation and stretch my green fingers into action.

Getting outside is such a mood booster and essential for healthy living, I do find a lovely potter in the garden on a nice day helps relieve stress. Whilst Spring celebrates all that Mother Nature brings, we celebrate our own Mums this time of year on March 15th - Mothers Day. Gardening is one of the hobbies I share with my own Mum and many a plant has been rescued by her sound horticultural advice. Another shared love we both have is that of music. One of the things I used to love doing when I was a child was singing with her, in the car to the radio mostly, but it always made us giggle. Now as an adult one of my main hobbies is singing and I belong to several music groups including Calne Choral Society. The singing bug has been passed down to my daughter and she and I sing together, in the car to the radio of course, which makes us giggle - but we are also both members of St Mary’s Church Choir.

Just like exercise, singing is great for your health. Believe it or not singing is actually classed as an aerobic activity as it increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when sitting. In addition, it’s beneficial psychologically because singing releases endorphins, which give the singer an overall "lifted" feeling and helps with stress reduction. Singing in a group brings about social and confidence benefits because when people sing together there is a sense of community, belonging and a shared sense of fun which is important to our psychological well-being.

Calne Spring Sing on 18th April might be a good place to start if you are interested in finding out what groups are available locally or just want to give singing in a group a go to see if it is for you. More

information can be found on the Visit Wiltshire website www.visitwiltshire.co.uk. Calne Choral meets every Monday evening and more info can be found at www.calnechoral.co.uk. St Mary’s church choir are always keen to welcome new members and rehearse on Friday evenings between 7.00 and 8.00 pm.

Singing is so beneficial that it is often used therapeutically. Singing for the Brain classes are run by the Alzheimer’s Society in Chippenham, which offer a structured group session for people with dementia and their carers based on music therapy and singing. More information can be found on their website www.alzheimers.org.uk. Springboard Opportunity Group in Chippenham use music therapy as part of their support for pre-school children with disabilities or special needs. Their website provides more information at www.springboardchippenham.co.uk.

From the 13th March I have been asked to lead the Golden Oldies singing group, meeting in Marden House at 10.30 am – 11.30 am. Golden Oldies or ‘Goldies’ as it is affectionately known by its members is not a choir but gives people who may not have many chances to get out, the opportunity to do so and sing along to the popular songs of the 50s and onwards. The Charity is able to provide the sessions through the support of Wiltshire and Swindon Community Foundation and will meet regularly on the second Friday of each month. More information about the group can be found on their website at www.golden-oldies.org.uk. A far cry

from my work as a Practice Manager, I am really looking forward to running the sessions and making new friends, so I look forward to seeing you there.

The beauty of singing is that you don’t need an instrument or special equipment. If you have ever seen the film Elf you

will know that Buddy (the Elf ) says that singing is ‘just like talking, except longer

and louder and you move your voice up and down’ and this is certainly true. It would be

irresponsible of me not to warn you about how contagious singing is of course. Members of your household are likely to join in - especially if it’s a catchy tune and before you know it you will have an epidemic on your hands. I loved singing with my Mum as a child and

am so thankful that she encouraged me. It’s a gift I can pass to my own

children which is much more valuable to them than my gardening tips!

The term ‘Spring Cleaning’ originated in colder climes from the practice of taking the opportunity, as soon as the warmer weather arrived, to clear out the dust and soot that had accumulated throughout the home from coal and logs fires during the Winter.

Modern appliances and central heating have made this unnecessary for many, but the concept of having a top-to-bottom clean at the start of Spring remains popular.

If you don’t fancy tackling it all yourself, then you can always get help from a professional cleaning company, many of whom offer special Spring Cleaning services.

Many people actually find the process of cleaning and de-cluttering cathartic

For this year's spring clean why not try:

• Emptying kitchen cupboards and cleaning inside. This is a good opportunity to check use-before dates on items and throw out those past their expiry date.

• Defrosting freezers, de-scaling kettles and irons, and cleaning ovens to aid efficient working.

• Vacuuming mattresses to get rid of dust mites, and turning mattresses to assist even wear.

• Removing cushions from sofas and vacuuming the crevices - you never know, you may find some money or jewellery that you thought you’d lost!

cleaner is many things – but mind reader is not one of them!

Before making your decision, do meet your cleaning representative first. A look around the house and a discussion about what you would like doing, should result in an estimate of how long it will take and how much it is going to cost. Most companies charge by the hour. I couldn’t afford to have my entire house cleaned every week, so I decided on the most important areas and then selected additional chores to be done on a fortnightly or monthly basis.

If you are still undecided about whether to employ a cleaner or not, take advice from someone who knows and go for it! You’ll never look back!

Liability and £1m Public/Products Liability insurance cover. Also, find out what procedures will be followed if your property gets damaged or broken during cleaning.

Be sure to find out what vetting procedures are employed, and whether DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks are made. Also, enquire about training and qualifications. Don’t forget to ask about temporary relief during holidays or periods of illness. Will the company provide a replacement, or are you expected to make alternative arrangements?

Finally, find out how flexible your cleaning company is. Do they work to a fixed template, or are they happy to comply with your individual requirements? When I employed my cleaner, I was encouraged to state clearly what I wanted doing and how. A good

After years of struggling to raise four children, work full time and care for a larger than average home, I eventually overcame feelings of guilt and shame at not being able to keep a clean and tidy house, and employed a company to do it instead. It felt like a load had been lifted! No more nagging feelings. No more panic. No more dread. Suddenly my house felt clean, loved and well cared for – and I wondered what all the fuss had been about!

The number of people employing cleaners is on the increase. Some take this option because they don’t like housework, whilst others don’t have time or else prefer to be doing other things. Yet others are too elderly, ill or infirm to clean for themselves. Whatever your reason, it is important to find a company you trust to care for your home and your valued possessions.

The best way to find a cleaner is by personal recommendation, but if that isn’t possible, one of your first priorities should be to check out references and testimonials. If the company can prove they’ve done a good job for others, chances are they will serve you well too.

Next, check out what insurance cover is in place. As a minimum there should be £5m Employers

SPRING IS JUST AROUND the corner! The days are

getting longer and brighter and, as we emerge from our winter hibernation, thoughts turn to new beginnings. Trees bud, flowers blossom, birds nest – and so do we!

We look to our nest with fresh eyes and exciting plans to start cleaning and refreshing our homestead ready for the year ahead – and what better place to start than the bathroom.

Bathrooms can get neglected over time, becoming a functional space that serves the needs of its inhabitants. With a little bit of TLC a bathroom can become a sanctuary. A relaxing spa-like place just perfect for relaxing in a hot, steamy tub full of bubbles at the end of a hard day. Soft, fluffy towels gently heating on the towel rail will keep you cosy while drying off and a comforting bath mat will keep your feet warm.

Many bathrooms have already got good bones, as with this one. They just need a bit of a makeover to be transformed from drab to fab. So, where to begin?

The colour scheme is a great place to start. Consider whether you already have a starting point or a blank canvas. This bathroom, with its neutral backdrop, was a blank canvas. Adding a colour from the red section of the colour wheel

would add warmth to the scheme. Instead of teaming the red with its direct complement, green, the TWO colours either side of green ie. blue/green and green/yellow were chosen. A split complementary colour scheme is more vibrant than a straight complementary scheme, yet still soft when the right combination of shades and colours are used.

The ‘technical’ colour scheme needed to be interpreted into a paint scheme that was aesthetically pleasing, using tints and shades from the colour areas chosen and applying the 70:20:10 design principle. (70% of the main colour, 20% of a complementary colour and 10% of an accent colour)

Using the real paint colour samples from the Little Greene and Paint & Paper Library palettes makes it easy to find the perfect colour quickly and accurately. Here is the paint colour shortlist.

Spring is here – let’s decorate!

This was quickly narrowed down to 3 colours - a perfect combination to add warmth, depth and interest to the revitalised bathroom

In a smallish bathroom, using the lighter colour on the walls (70%) ensures that the walls don’t advance into the room, making it appear even smaller.

The amethyst colour (20%) would be used on the panelling around the bath, with the summer sky blue being used as an accent colour (10%). Small ‘shots’ of the accent colour dotted around the room would bring the scheme to life.

The personal touches - wall vinylsAdd personality to the space with unexpected personal touches. Wall vinyls are in vogue at the moment and can be a great way to personalise a space when used with paint. This bathroom had a large uninterrupted wall space above the bath – ideal for ‘making a splash’ on. A large vinyl of an inspirational quote was applied by

• painting a square of the amethyst colour where the vinyl would go

• highlighting a couple of areas in the blue and applying the vinyl to the area

• painting over the whole area (and vinyl) with the final wall colour before peeling off the vinyl revealing the quote in the under-colours of amethyst and blue

A candle garden is a pretty way to display candles that emits a soft gentle glow when lit. Candles of different heights were scratched with a file, white waxed to soften the colour, then arranged on a cake stand with scattered pebbles.

A nice mirror can be expensive so consider buying a cheap mirror and giving it the Chalk Paint treatment. This mirror was bright white and shiny. By simply waxing it with Autentico Sparling Silver Wax and buffing the finish back, a cheap mirror has been transformed into something that looks more classy and expensive.

The Windows were simply and cheaply dressed by adding a venetian blind in a toning colour– usually bathroom windows are quite small so a blind is a great way to soften the window without breaking the bank.

Add a few towels and accessories, run the bath, light the candles and ENJOY your new spa-like sanctuary!

Here, a simple cabinet was transformed using a delicately scrolled wall vinyl across the front and side of the unit. Once applied, the unit and vinyl area were painted with Autentico Chalk Paint in Almond and, when the paint was dry, the vinyl was peeled off revealing the delicate scroll pattern in the white of the original cabinet – very subtle.

Painting the top of the cabinet in the same colour as the bath panel linked the two sides of the room visually. The base of the unit was matt varnished, making it hard wearing and a new set of knobs were added. Hey presto, the little cabinet is transformed into something quite unique and eye catching.

Ten Top Wallpaper Tips

1. Make sure all your paper has the same lot number so that it matches.

2.  Use a lining paper to prevent the top paper from creasing or stretching and help the paste to dry faster.

3.  Apply a one-inch stripe of white paint along the top of the wall before papering over dark paint or wallpaper. It won’t be as noticeable if the wallpaper fails to align exactly at the top.

4. Use a special plumb bob to get the paper straight.

5. Your first strip should be about four inches longer than the height of the wall. Strips after that should be at least two inches longer top and bottom and may need to be more to ensure a pattern match.

6. Turn off the power before papering around switches and receptacles. Remove cover plates and paper over them. Then make a diagonal slit from opposite corners. Trim away the triangular flaps and replace the cover plate.

7.  Double check newly hung strips for bubbles and seam matches.

8.  Use a sponge to wipe excess adhesive and rinse the sponge often.

9. Use a sharp utility knife to trim paper

10. A special paste is needed to hang a border on top of wallpaper.

The Art of Wallpaper

by Susan Brookes-Morris

Go along to any DIY store or specialist decorating shop and you will see lots of different types of wall coverings, but how did they originate?

The first type of paper was introduced in Egypt around 4000 BC and was called papyrus. It was from about 200 BC that the Chinese started to put glued rice paper onto their walls, and around 105AD that they began to make paper from textile waste. Knowledge spread from the Chinese to the Middle East via prisoners in the eighth century. It took until the twelfth century for papermaking to reach Europe.

English manufacturing methods became world famous, and in the eighteenth century wallpapers from London workshops were highly sought after. Initially, hand painted papers imitated architectural details or materials like marble and stucco, but eventually other patterns emerged.

The 1920’s are known as the Golden Age of Wallpaper as some 400 million rolls were sold during that period. The industry was revolutionized after WW2 when plastic resins were added to make wallpapers stain resistant, washable, and more durable.

Whilst the popularity of wallpaper has ebbed and flowed in the intervening years, there is now more variety than ever and a wide price range. The choice of wallpaper can affect the mood and style of a room and can influences the selection of furnishing. To get the best effect from any paper however, it is important to hang it correctly, so we have ‘pasted’ some great tips opposite…

The Secret of Crickley Hall James Herbert.......................................

At over 600 pages, this novel from the master of horror does not disappoint as the pages fly by. Gabe and Eve Caleigh have moved with their two daughters from their London home to the West Country to escape the memories of their five year old son who disappeared without trace from a playground a year ago. Their new home is Crickley Hall, a large house with a checkered past, but it has been empty for many years. It seems a bargain price. As they settle into the community they learn more about the village, and Crickley Hall. Tragedy occurred during the Great Flood of 1943, when the hall was being used to house orphans evacuated from London due to the Blitz. The children and their guardians all perished in the flood, and it would appear that the young victims are not content to remain quiet.

Soon Eve starts seeing her missing son and, like an unstoppable wall of water, the horrors that lie lurking in Crickley Hall flood to the surface, and Gabe must fight to save his family as the truth of that night in 1943 emerges: a truth that it is worse than any nightmare.

Read it if you dare.

Delphi and the Glass Slippers Darcey Bussell...............................................................................................

For most young readers, Darcey Bussell will be familiar through the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. What they may not be aware of is her career with the Royal Ballet, and she has poured this love and knowledge of ballet into her series of books for young ballet obsessed girls. The Magic Ballerina books follow the adventures of Delphie, a young girl who attends a ballet school. She is given a pair of red ballet shoes which turn out to be magical, and are able to whisk her away to the land of Enchantia where characters from famous ballets live. In this book Delphie has to help Cinderella. Something strange is happening and, as the clock chimes seven o’clock, time jumps and she never gets to attend the ball. Along the way, Delphie also encounters a mysterious cloaked figure who tries to keep the Prince from finding Cinderella.

Guaranteed to delight any budding ballerina, this book is exciting and full of little glimpses into the world of ballet and dancing.

‘There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.’So said Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and in support of this philosophy, more than 100 countries worldwide will be commemorating World Book Day on Thursday 5th March. This year marks the eighteenth anniversary of the event, which is designed to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading.

How exactly the occasion is celebrated is up to the individual school or library, with ideas and resources for activities available from the website –www.worldbookday.com, but regardless of the outcome, every child in participating schools will receive a book token that can be exchanged for a free book. There are ten specially selected titles on offer, with the option to use the token to receive a £1 discount on an alternative book if you prefer to choose your own.

There are many benefits to encouraging a healthy attitude towards reading from an early age. The main one is that it exercises the brain. “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body,” stated Joseph Addison. It improves concentration, builds vocabulary, develops imagination, teaches about the wider world, is a great form of entertainment and helps relax and calm the body and mind.

So, enlarge not only your child’s world but your own too, by discovering the joy of books!

1. People can engage with you in their own time

Your door doesn’t have to be open, and your phone doesn’t have to be ringing – if someone has a thought in the middle of the night or wants to check your prices while you’re unavailable they can.

2. It will set you apart from the rest

A website gives customers something to look at. It presents you and your business, with pictures and style, giving customers a feel for your business before getting in touch. Something that’s lacking from just a name and a phone number in a traditional directory.

3. The internet is the first place people look

Why Every Business Should Have a WebsiteWe live in an age where the vast majority of businesses and companies have a website. If you haven’t yet taken the leap and got yourself online here are a few reasons why websites are so popular, and why customers have come to expect you to have one.

where they’ll go first. They’ll open up Google and type what they want. If you don’t have a website you won’t appear and they will never even know you existed.

4. It allows you to talk to your clients directly

Maintaining a relationship with customers is important for all businesses, but for many it’s not practical or cost-effective to send frequent mail-shots or make hundreds of phone calls a month. A website can be a great way to stay in touch or pass on information on new products and services.

5. It puts you in control

With Facebook now totalling over 1 billion active monthly users people are having online conversations more and more. A lot of those conversations are about businesses they’ve interacted with (both online and offline). By establishing a presence you’ll be able to control and influence some of those conversations. Whether they’re good or bad they will be going on regardless, so being able to take part or learn from them can be invaluable.

It’s almost a self-fulfilling prophecy, but if all of your competitors are online and you’re not, it’s unlikely you will ever be found by customers.

In the current economic climate a website is a relatively cheap, yet effective way of establishing a presence and advertising yourself.

 What can I give?What can I give?

Design & Computer Graphics byAlexander S. Grenfell, Calne.

Irecently had a flash back to a memory I thought waslong forgotten. I was a child of 5 or 6 and the house inwhich my family were living backed on to a garage and

car showroom. We heard a knock at the door one evening, and it was a fireman. You’ll have to evacuate. What?

Apparently, the garage was on fire and the fire wasperilously near to some petrol dispensers. I rememberstanding outside in pyjamas and a dressing gown. Westood there helplessly watching the firemen do their thing.Meanwhile, my grandmother (who lived above us) wentback into the evacuated property and did what any self-respecting Scot in the latter years would do: she madetwenty mugs of tea for the firemen! These were the days beforehealth and safety.

I remember to this day thatfeeling of being helpless, notknowing what I could offerthat would make a difference. Many of us in relation to God feelthe same sense of helplessness. What on earth can we offer toGod? A cup of tea? A biscuit?

The God who painted theuniverse with at least 70 thousandmillion, million, million, stars(in a 100 thousand milliongalaxies) and the same God whoinvented light, time, energy, theelements, and even life itself is anawesome God. I can’t imaginethat God being impressed withany sacrifice I try to make.

Sacrificial offerings are at the heart of theOld Testament. They were living in a world of elaboraterules, when it came to sacrifices. Read first seven chaptersof Leviticus if you want to know more. Grain offerings, burnt offerings, atonement offerings, guilt offerings, drinkofferings: all there to keep people holy before God.

But the Temple sacrificial system would be ultimatelyflawed. The sacrifices were only ever temporary fixes. Likea piece of bad DIY that doesn’t last five minutes and thenthe shelf falls off the wall, the forgiving effect of the sacrificewouldn’t last long.

Have you heard the story of the cruise liner that wentpast a tiny island? Suddenly a man with a beard, halfnaked, rushes on to the beach, lights a fire, and waves his

arms. All the passengers on the boat simply wave back.“Who’s he?” one passenger asked the Captain. “No idea, but every year we come past here he does the same”.

The people reliant on the sacrificial system were sincereand reverent, but they were never permanently rescuedfrom the power of sin. As soon as they got home, theywere spiritually speaking back on the island waving forhelp. Praise the Lord though, because God did send arescuer in the end.

When Jesus walked the earth, he said that loving Godwith all your heart, soul, mind and strength was moreimportant than offerings and sacrifices (Mk12 v 33). He

reminded us that the Lord desired mercy notsacrifice (Mt 9 v 13). In fact, the only

offering Jesus seemed to praise wasthat of a poor widow (Lk 21 v 1).

When we see Jesus at theLast Supper, the scene is atypical Passover meal, inevery detail, apart from onething: the Passover lambthat would be sacrificed ismissing. There is no mentionof it. Why? Because Jesus

Himself was the Lamb ofGod that would take away the

sins of the world. His bloodshed once for all would be the one

perfect sacrifice to rescue us fromthe power of sin and death. His onerescuing act on the cross demonstratedthe extent of the love of that awesome

God for us.What can we possibly offer to God? Paul suggests

that in gratitude, we can offer ourselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God (Rom 12 v 1). In other words, bepeople who live for God rather than ourselves. Doing thisis not easy, but it begins by offering a life lived in love, justas Jesus did (Eph 5 v 2).

Going back to my grandmother with a tray of mugs oftea for those firemen; the Christian is called to be like atea bag: when we get into the hot water of being a livingsacrifice, it makes us stronger not weaker. It is a key tospiritual growth.

People often ask me, “Is there something in your garden you couldn’t live without?” My reply is always, “My greenhouse.”

A greenhouse has many benefits, chief of which for me is that it extends the gardening year.

With a greenhouse you can potter in your garden all year round, and grow a range of plants which simply wouldn’t thrive without the extra protection. Before choosing a greenhouse you will need to check whether your local planning authority imposes any restrictions. While you don’t normally need planning permission, building regulations do have to be adhered to.

Buy the biggest greenhouse you can afford that will fit comfortably on to your plot - you will always fill it! But even if you can only afford a tiny one - my first one had a base of just 4’ by 5.5’ (1.2m by 1.7m) - it will still be a worthwhile investment.

The aluminium- framed types are very sturdy and relatively cheap. Wooden-framed constructions are more attractive though, and often better in a small garden where everything has to earn its keep. Western red cedar is good because it lasts a long time and weathers really well.

Greenhouses are even more useful if they are heated. I started out with paraffin heaters, but found they produced a lot of condensation and were messy and smelly. Electric heating is best, and very economical if you fit a system thermostat so that it only switches on when necessary.

Apart from heat the most important factor is ventilation. In high summer this is vital to prevent your plants from cooking. Automatic arms which open the vents at a pre-designated temperature are really useful. External blinds are also very good as they prevent sun scorch.

Finally, fit staging along one edge of the greenhouse for your pots, and dig a soil or gravel bed on the other side for things like tomato plants.

Now all you have to do is plant some seeds and invest in a few tender perennials.

GREAT GREENHOUSE TIPS

• Fit your greenhouse to level foundations.

• Orientation isn’t important , but make

sure it isn’t in the shadow of the house, or

overhanging trees.

• Ventilate well.

• Any electrical work must be carried out or

certified by a qualified electrician to comply

with part P of the building regulations.

• Don’t be tempted to use a household

electric heater. It won’t cope with the damp

conditions in a greenhouse.

• Fit a water butt to the down pipes at either

end of the greenhouse to conserve water.

Jo Deacon

THE EASTER ALCHEMIST

by Joanne Deacon

Easter time was coming and the shops were full of eggs. Ones in boxes, ones in mugs, and some with little legs. Some had pretty faces, and others had a toy, Every child who got one would be sure to dance with joy.

But now I have no little ones to buy for, they’re all grown. I’m waiting for the day when they have babies of their own.Getting older is a pain, you find fun where you can, Your mind is stuck at twenty, but the rest looks ninety one.

After a year spent on and off stuck in a pristine bed, Alone and fed up in a ward, with drugs and IV’s fed,My face was saggy, hair a mess, like an old Brillo pad, Like an exploding mattress it stuck out. I looked so bad.

But better now, I want to feel and look human again. I don’t mind the bitter wind, I’m not afraid of rain.So I decided to be brave, and seek a clever man’ Who wielded scissors like only a great magician can.

An Alchemist in fairy tales I read when I was four, Spun straw into soft shining gold piled, gleaming on the floor.I strolled there by the river, and shook as I walked in. So clean and fresh, and me a mess. I felt it was a sin.

I almost didn’t go there – I felt such a tatty sight. But little did I realise I had finally got it right. For Harry Potter is alive and morphed from some young kid, Into a genie, going there was best thing that I did.

Conditioned, cut, styled and with hair so soft and gently waved, The thatched roof I had crept in with had magically been saved.I celebrated my new look with just a cup of tea, I now feel years younger and my hair feels bouncy free.

Now all I have to do is find some make up that I suit, To go with my new red dress and my pair of grey suede boots. So come on Easter, tempt me with your pretty choccy sweets. I’d rather spend my money on my new look hair and treats.
