On Monday (Aug. 26), Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto

(Peña Nieto in Spanish) visited the United States for the first time this week since his term began in 2012.

The visit was the reciprocation of a recent trade mission visit by California Gov. Jerry Brown to Mexico.

Pena Nieto addressed U.S. and Mexican officials gathered at a cachet hotel ball-room in Los Angeles, pushing for greater economic cooperation and immigration reform. The meeting marked the begin-ning of a two-day California tour.

Pena Nieto formally announced a new border crossing that would connect the two territories to facilitate more efficient traffic and trade patterns in and out of the United States. He also spoke of the need for the United States to recognize its immigrants as a strong point.

“There are still states that have not evolved so much as California, that still skimp on recognition – and even worse, the rights of immigrants,” the Mexican president said. “Those who still believe and bet for the exclusion and discrimina-tion or the rejection of diversity, ... I only have one thing to say: The future, and a very near future, will demonstrate your

ethical mistake. Time will show we’re right.”Brown, on the other hand, spoke on the socio-

economic interdependencies that have developed between his state and its southern neighbor. In a speech introducing Pena Nieto, the governor expressly welcomed all Mexicans inside California, regardless of their status.

The governor also called for greater cooperation between his state and Mexico, which in 2013 was the recipient of $23.9 billion of the state’s exports, making it California’s largest trade partner.

Brown also is likely looking for a boost from the Latino electorate, which makes up roughly a fifth of all California voters, given his upcoming election in November.

The state is in a radically different political environment from earlier moments in its history marked by racial and ethnic tension, such as the passage of Proposition 187, the 1994 law that restricted access to social services and education for California’s undocumented population. Today, Hispanics make up the largest minority group in the state.

Según CNN, Israel acordó abrir los pasos fronterizos para permitir el paso de la ayuda, extender el límite de pesca y facilitar el bloqueo como parte del acuerdo. El alto al fuego comenzó el martes, 27 de agosto.

El cese al fuego termina con los últimos enfrentamientos entre Hamas e Israel. Los reportes indican que más de 2,220 personas murieron durante el reciente conflicto.

“Esta vez, esperamos que el alto al fuego permanezca”, dijo el portavoz del gobierno israelí, Mark Regev, según se cita en el periódico The Globe and Mail.

El secretario de Estado de EE.UU., John Kerry, emitió el siguiente comunicado sobre el cese al fuego:

“Nos estamos acercando a la siguiente fase con los ojos bien abiertos Hemos pasado por esto antes; y todos estamos conscientes de los retos que se avecinan. Tanto los israelíes como los palestinos tienen fuertes opiniones sobre sus necesidades y el futuro de la región”.

El secretario general de la O.N.U, Ban Ki-moon, dijo que es importante que ambas partes traten de abordar las causas de los últimos combates.

“Cualquier esfuerzo de paz que no haga frente a las causas profundas de la crisis, va a hacer poco más que sentar el escenario para el próximo ciclo de violencia”, señaló Ban según fue citado por BBC News.

After several weeks of fighting, the Pal-estinian militant group Hamas and

Israel have reached a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

According to CNN, Israel agreed to open border crossings to allow aides to pass through, extend the fishing limit and ease the blockade as part of the agreement. The ceasefire began on Tuesday (Aug. 27).

The ceasefire ends the latest fighting between Hamas and Israel. Reports indicate that more than 2,220 people were killed during the recent conflict.

“This time, we hope the ceasefire will stick,” The Globe and Mail newspaper quoted Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev as saying.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry issued the following statement about the ceasefire:

“We are approaching the next phase with our eyes wide open. We have been down this road before, and we are all aware of the challenges ahead. Both the Israelis and the Palestinians have strong views about their needs and the future of the region.”

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said it’s important that both parties try to address the cause of the latest fighting.

“Any peace effort that does not tackle the root causes of the crisis will do little more than set the stage for the next cycle of violence,” Ban was quoted by BBC News as saying.

Mexican president visits California, calls for stronger U.S. partnership

El lunes, 26 de agosto, el presidente mexicano Enrique Peña Nieto visitó Estados Unidos esta

semana por primera vez desde que inició su mandato en el 2012.

La visita fue la reciprocidad de una misión comercial reciente del gobernador de California, Jerry Brown, a México.

Peña Nieto se dirigió a los funcionarios estadounidenses y mexicanos reunidos en un salón de un hotel en Los Ángeles, presionando por una mayor cooperación económica y por la reforma migratoria. La reunión marcó el inicio de una gira de dos días por California.

El Mandatario mexicano anunció formalmente un nuevo cruce fronterizo que conectaría los dos territorios para facilitar patrones de tránsito y comercio más eficientes dentro y fuera de Estados Unidos. También habló de la necesidad de que Estados Unidos reconozca a sus inmigrantes como un punto fuerte.

“Todavía hay estados que no han evolucionado tanto como California, que todavía escatiman en reconocimiento – y lo que es peor, los derechos de los inmigrantes”, dijo el Presidente mexicano. “Aquellos

que todavía creen y apuestan por la exclusión y la discriminación o el rechazo de la diversidad, ... solamente tengo una cosa que decirles: El futuro —y un futuro muy próximo— les demostrará su error ético. El tiempo les enseñará que tenemos la razón”.

Por su par te , Brown habló sobre las interdependencias socioeconómicas que se han desarrollado entre su estado y su vecino del sur. En un discurso de presentación de Peña Nieto, el Gobernador dio expresamente la bienvenida a todos los mexicanos dentro de California, independientemente de su estatus.

Brown también está probablemente buscando un impulso del electorado latino, que representa alrededor de una quinta parte de todos los votantes de California, dada su próxima elección en noviembre.
