Urban Aspirations Asia: A Graduate Urban Studies Workshop Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, NUS, 1415 August 2014 Organizers: Tim Bunnell and Eric C. Thompson Applications are invited for participation in a graduate student urban studies workshop to be held in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at NUS, 1415 August 2014. The workshop forms part of a large, collaborative urban studies research grant on Aspirations, Urban Governance, and the Remaking of Asian Cities. The workshop will be centred on sessions in which graduate students will read, present and discuss short draft papers (maximum 3,000 words). More specifically, we will experiment with a format in which groups of three graduate students will read and present each other’s work before opening out discussion to include Professor Ananya Roy (University of California, Berkeley), whose Visiting Professorship is associated with the Urban Aspirations project, and NUS faculty members involved in the project. The intention is thus that graduate students from within and beyond NUS will learn from, and about, each other’s work and benefit from having their draft papers ‘workshopped’ towards publication. Applicants should be scholars: (i) who are currently enrolled in a graduate studies programme (Masters or PhD) at NUS, and conducting urbanrelated research in Asia; (ii) who are currently enrolled in a graduate studies programme (Masters or PhD) in another university in Asia working on urbanrelated topics; or (iii) who have completed a Masters degree in an urbanrelated topic in an Asian university and are planning to continue their studies at the doctoral level. Any urban studies topic is acceptable, although we particularly welcome applications from scholars employing ethnographic approaches and/or who are undertaking comparative work. To apply, please send an abstract for your proposed paper (maximum 250 words) and a short biographical description (maximum 100 words) to Daryl Li ([email protected]) in Word or PDF format. Please also include with your proposal the title of the work, your institutional affiliation, email address, and mailing address. The deadline for submissions is 14 March 2014. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by the end of March 2014. All successful applicants should submit their draft papers (maximum 3,000 words) by 1 July 2014. Overseas participants will receive funding for accommodation and travel. Please direct any enquiries to Daryl Li at [email protected]
