CHAPLAIN MESSAGE We are beginning to prepare for Lent. This is a time to reflect on our life, its like a yearly check-up to the doctor, only on our spirituality. This is a time for some self-examination, we can look at our lives and take steps towards growing in our relationship with God. I was reflecting on what to give up for Lent this year and I laugh when I think of the

or 2 for 1 Lenten promises. Such as giving up candy, because I want to lose weight. I’m the queen of these types of Lenten promises, I have done this MANY TIMES, and this year as I reflect and pray I am reminded of this opportunity to really be honest and check in, spend some time in reflection and prayer and do some self-inventory about areas I am being Called to Grow. So this bring me to the challenge, I challenge you to be intentional about figuring out what you could do that would strengthen your relationship with God this Lent. Maybe it is 10 minutes of prayer each day, maybe it is stretching yourself to do acts of service, perhaps you are going to fast. Fasting doesn’t have to be about food, it may be getting rid of something in your life that could help purify you. Perhaps the fast

is from social media, or from texting and being intentional about calling instead. Maybe it is Netflix, ? Maybe it is forgiveness, and choosing to forgive someone for something you have been holding onto in your hearts that may be weighing you down. What is keeping you from being present or from being quiet and listening to God? It doesn’t have to be a competition between friends and family, or a one-upper but this Lent make it about you, a personal choice and action which may improve your relationship with God. I pray that this Lenten season we grow, grow in holiness, grow in our relationship with God and how we love and respond to one another. L. Holle—Teacher / Chaplain

Student Voice – Continues to Impact Programming at All Saints At the end of Semester 1 we asked our students very direct questions regarding programming at All Saints. We focused questions on our schedule, and in particular on Connect and Engage. Some summary thoughts:

• Students found Engage blocks very valuable and used them effectively. However, with only 2 Engage sessions per week they often filled up quickly in high-need areas.

• Engage sessions were often too long for some students to use as a work period (ie. staying focused for 70 minutes), or they only need to ask 1-2 questions that could be addressed in a shorter time period.

• Many students had challenges attending before/after school tutorials for 1-on-1 support or to ask quick questions.

• Connect block (30 minutes twice per week) was often too long and not always productive.

• Students who identified gaps in their learning while completing the WIRE (“Week in Review” student feedback form) on Thursdays had to wait several school days before being able to attend an Engage session that could address them.

To address these issues, we’ve introduced a new block into the timetable called “Focus” and made changes to Connect.

• Connect: - Three times a week for 15 minutes instead of twice a week for 30 minutes

• Focus periods - Monday and Thursday afternoons for 30 minutes between period 3 and 4.

• Teachers offer Focus blocks for both curricular and non-curricular support.

• No pre-sign up necessary: students go to whichever Focus classroom they choose to finish up work, ask questions, or spend extra time. Attendance is tracked and recorded like every other block.

Please take a few minutes to read the newsletter each month. Please feel free to contact us at any time with questions, concerns, or suggestions as we continue to work together to provide a wonderful learning opportunity for your son and or daughter. On behalf of the staff and students at All Saints we wish you and your family the very best. Please note students will be dismissed for Spring Break on Friday, March 22, @ 2:10pm. Classes will resume on Monday, April 1, 2019.

If you have any questions or feedback please let us know by emailing: [email protected] M. Bolder—Principal; M. Billinton / L. Myers—Vice Principals

School Council

What’s so important about attending council meetings? Because ... • It sends a message to our kids that they matter. • We get to support our kids’ education and what’s best for

them. • We learn about and hear first-hand what is happening at a

school, district, city, and provincial level. • It’s an opportunity to have a positive impact on the future of education in Alberta. • We <might> get to sample some of our kids’ culinary expertise! At our last meeting, we took a tour of the incredible facility our children spend their days in. We talked about why it’s important to have a school council at a high school level, what is important to us as parents when considering the qualities of who is hired into the administration at All Saints (Principal and Vice Principals). The summation was submitted to CSSD accordingly. We also sampled some delectable treats made by our culinary students. If you weren’t there, you definitely missed out!

(Mark your calendar for Tuesday, March 12th—6:30-7:45 pm) Mental Health and your Teenager Tuesday, March 19th| 7-9pm | Calgary Plaza Hotel & Conference Centre, 1316 33 Street NE Combined Parent and Trustee Forum on Mental Health with Dr. Lynn Miller. She gave the keynote address at last years’ ASCA Conference and was received very positively. Join a proactive discussion and learn: • What mental health concerns exist in school-aged children. • To teach kids how to manage their difficulties. • To identify how kids push through anxiety. It’s a relevant and important topic that we can all learn more about as we help our kids navigate their teenage years. Register by emailing [email protected]. See you there!

CONNECTIONS

Our District updates known as Connections are distributed monthly. We are pleased to provide the March 2019 edition.

STUDENT SERVICES Registration for Next Year

Over the past few weeks Mrs. Brown and Mrs. MacNeil have been speaking to Grade 11 students about graduation requirements and their course selection for next year. Students have completed a Graduation Tracking Sheet that will assist them in making sure their plan will lead to a high school diploma. If students are unsure about their credits, they can check their MyPass account with Alberta Education. All students are encouraged to activate a MyPass Account as soon as possible. All Grade 10 and 11 students will complete their course registration forms for the 2019-20 school year this Thursday, February 28th. Students will bring these forms home for parental authorization. Students will then enter their course requests on-line from March 4-11.

Summer School Summer School Registration is now open! 3 and 5 credit courses are available with some on-line options. Summer school can be a great opportunity to make up a failed course or missed credits. Sometimes students use this time to get ahead for next year. Counsellors are available to consult with regarding appropriate choices. Course and registration information can be found on the front page of the district website: www.cssd.ab.ca

English Department—Poetry In Voice

The All Saints English Language Arts and French departments have integrated Poetry in Voice/Les Voix de la Poesie into every course, and this has given students the opportunity to read, analyze and recite poems chosen from an online anthology of both classic and contemporary poems. Approximately 800 students took part in the program through their ELA and FLA classes. There were 50 school semifinalists (25 from first semester, 25 from second), and 15 finalists in our English stream. These fifteen students performed with the two bilingual students at the school finals on February 27th held in the St. Cecilia Theatre. At this competition, students were judged by a panel of teachers and special guests. The quality of the performances was outstanding, each student showing a solid understanding of the poems and a commitment to their interpretations. In the English category, third place went to Alleana Beltran, second place went to Jocelyn Bernard and first place went to Madison Moser. In the bilingual category, the winner was Peniel Negre. Both Madison and Peniel will now submit recitation videos for consideration by Poetry in Voice, and if they are lucky enough to be chosen one of the top twenty-four students in Canada, they will be invited to the national competition in Winnipeg on April 23-26, 2019, where they will have the chance to win $5,000. In addition, these four students make up the All Saints team, which will go on to compete in the Calgary Team Regionals on Friday, March 8 at All Saints High School. Congratulations to all students for their wonderful presentations.

Improvisation Team The All Saints Drama Department is proud to announce that we have our very own improv squad! The concept of competitive improv, or “Theatresports” was developed over thirty years ago right here in Calgary at the Loose Moose Theatre. Since then, Theatresports has spread all over the globe, with numerous international tournaments held annually. Each year, Loose Moose holds The Calgary High School Improv Tournament. Teams from all over the

city gather to learn, make new friends, and then battle for comedy supremacy. We are very proud that our Drama department has been invited to participate in this prestigious event. The tournament runs from Wednesday, March 6th through Sunday, March 9th. All Saints will be competing on Thursday the 7th and Saturday the 9th. Both shows start at 7:30pm. This show is open to the public, and we invite everyone to come out and cheer on our comedy Legends!

Our Inaugural Musical Production Anticipation continues to build for All Saints’ first Musical Production. For those that haven’t heard yet, our Drama Department is producing the Broadway classic, Fiddler on the Roof. This is a very complex, full-length show that explores the theme of maintaining traditions of faith and family while facing prejudice and persecution. Preparations for Fiddler on the Roof began before Christmas, and our cast is working tirelessly to put this show together for you. The production will also be utilizing the skills of students from other departments such as Construction, Visual Art, and Cosmetology. In all, well over one hundred All Saints students will be involved in Fiddler on the Roof. We hope that you will be able to come out and support their efforts. Performance dates will be finalized soon, stay tuned for information about purchasing tickets.

Legendary Leadership Our Leadership 10 Team helped spread some Valentine cheer selling some sweet treats at lunchtime to a very enthusiastic crowd. This class of future leaders are headed to a Social Justice Summit, look for updates in next month’s newsletter.
